Boyfriend and I were in the Langham Place to watch a movie and we were thinking where to eat close by that was quick. He didn't feel like anything from the food court. We walked by 天吉屋 (English name: Tenkichiya) and saw there was no one in line! I guess we got there early because when we left after we finished dining, a queue had formed. The menu is in Chinese but they do have an English one upon request. They offer unlimited refills salad. And they really do come around quite often to refill your bowl. This is basically the basic shredded lettuce and Japanese salad dressing that is found in most tempura or cutlet places. Boyfriend oddly loves this type of salad.
They also say there is unlimited refills of appetizers: pickled burdock and daikon. This is found in the little jars on your table along with the seasonings.
I had the cold udon with a mini tempura rice bowl ($108). Apparently this is a lot of food. I didn't expect that. The udon was really nice and chewy. I loved the yuzu peel as it gave it a bit of freshness. The dipping sauce was a lot more concentrated than most places I've been to. It also came with a bowl of miso soup. This was ok.
The mini tempura rice bowl was actually bigger than expected. You get two shrimp, two green beans, eggplant, shredded onion and a soft boiled egg. All deep fried to a nice crispiness. It didn't feel oily at all and not over fried. The egg was wonderful as the yolk just flowed out nicely.
Boyfriend had the tenbushi set ($148). This entails a bigger platter of tempura and a bucket of rice where you can get unlimited refills. There is also a bowl of miso soup.
You get four shrimp, two green beans, half a soft shell crab, eggplant, fried nori, a piece of red snapper in shiso leaf and a squid with shredded onion.
They provide instructions for you on how eat this set which boyfriend followed. He dipped the shrimp and nori in the tempura dipping sauce provided. Then he poured a thicker sauce over the shrimp, green beans and fish which he had over his rice.
And then at the end, he requested the dashi soup which came in a little kettle. The dashi had a light taste.
He then placed the onion and squid over more rice along with seasonings and poured the tea on top. This softened the onion and oddly made it even sweeter in taste.
Food comes out very quickly. We didn't wait long at all after ordering. The tempura as crisp and not dripping in oil. Portions was generous and we both rolled out of there very full. Service was quite good, too with explanation of any questions we asked. Definitely be back but tip is to come early to beat the long queue.
