Having had our fair share of Shanghainese food while living in Shanghai, we decided to give this place a try for lunch. The verdict was that the food is decent, but somewhat expensive for its Sheung Wan location.Arriving at 12:15, I grabbed one of the last 2-person tables. Lunch sets range from $35 for wonton noodles to $55 for spare ribs or Chinese meatballs, including a small cold dish and a glass of soy bean milk (hot or cold). There's also a 10% discount for settling the bill before 12:50pm.
The Shanghainese wonton noodles were good value at $35. The 4 wontons (Shanghainese wontons are folded like antique Chinese ingots) had a good vegetables and pork and the noodles were perfectly cooked, Shanghai-style noodles in a tasty chicken broth.
The Chinese meatballs were a good size, not too salty and came with some baby bok choy. Real Shanghainese meatballs would tend to have a sweeter sauce, but this was acceptable. The vegetable rice was ok, although the vegetables had not been as finely chopped as I had sen in Shanghai.
The person next us got the Wuxi spare ribs with vegetable rice and what arrived looked on-par with Cafe de Coral and Fairwood, not exactly good value.
Otherwise, the restaurant had a good environment and efficient service. Worth trying, but for better value Chinese food, go to Zhong Guo Song on Wo On Lane in Lan Kwai Fong.
