Again, 2 of us eating out, thought we would try something a bit more interesting. And as winter approaches, I thought we could do a lamb feast to warm ourselves up.Luckily I called earlier in the day to make reservations, the restaurant was quite full when we got there. Luckily I called earlier in the day to make reservations, the restaurant was quite full when we got there. Tables were a bit crowded together but otherwise the interior was quite interesting, with a big map and lots of photos hanging around, and a stand by the door that sells dried fruits and tea.
We ordered a spicy beef bowl 水煮肥牛 which I thought was more Sichuanese than XinJiang, but bf wanted something spicy. It came in a big bowl and was piping hot with chili oil, but the beef was a bit chewy for my like. The only thing I ate from it was the chewy potato noodles 薯粉. We also ordered the spicy hand-shredded chicken 手撕椒麻雞 which I thought was the highlight of the night - a whole fresh succulent chicken (none of the "fresh" frozen sort), and lightly spiced that leaves a lingering taste in your mouth. The lamb skewers with rice 羊肉串手抓飯 was a bit disappointing as the lamb was dry and tasteless despite being smothered in spice (how did they manage that?!), though the rice was passible and went well with the other dishes, but it's more like a Chinese version of biryani. The long string beans were OK, done with a twist compared with the Sichuanese style as they put the really spicy peppercorns in it and use minced mutton instead of pork, but the beans weren't cooked enough to my liking, I prefer it when it's almost slightly charred. We also ordered the 羊肉餃子 but the waitress told us they had sold out for the night. With my consistent begging and pleading, she asked the chef if he could find some more for us, and so he steamed the last 3 dumplings of the night for us - FREE! Which was great as it would have been too much food if we had 10, what with a whole chicken and all. The skin was thicker than the normal variety but that's what I love, and the lamb filling was quite juicy. The blueberry yoghurt drink was quite nice too, with a lot of aloe vera in it and a nice tangy sourness to it.
For the friendliness of the chef, we'll rate this restaurant.
