I think I've discovered a gem among the thousands of restaurants in Hong Kong. And that gem is Baked.I had the day off and decided to try out something new. I had the day off and decided to try out something new. Looking among my list of restaurants I bookmarked, I came across Baked. Not that many reviews but all of them positive. It was casual enough for a day off and headed off.
Located in Central, it's in a side street that has a number of other restaurants. It's small but it was also packed on a weekday afternoon. It wasn't even lunch time and I could only find a seat at the bar.
The cafe is not too big. A small open kitchen on one side and narrow counters facing the wall and a strip of chairs at the bar facing the kitchen.
Menu is in English only. During the day, they have various sandwiches. I have no idea what they serve at night as it is open in the evening. But I think items other than sandwiches?
They also serve a good selection of coffee that (from the menu) they use their own blend of beans. They also have fresh juice and soda.
I ordered a flat white ($30). It was strong enough and smelled fantastic. The beans were more on the nutty side which I liked. Temperature was just right as well.
I ordered the open steak sandwich ($162). And wow .. they weren't kidding when they called it the big boss. It's a beast. A perfectly medium rare steak laid on top of a fantastic sour dough bread that was grilled with a slab of gooey melted cheddar. It was topped with fat juicy grilled mushrooms and caramelized onions. And to finish it off, you get a whole mountain of argula that is actually dressed! Not just flavorless greens. Everything was seasoned perfectly. There was a mixture of textures: crunchy, soft, gooey. A mixture of flavors: sour, sweet, salty. Everything worked together in perfect harmony. Not one was too much.
A fantastic place! The food was so good. Staff was friendly. Loved how the chef really took the time to make each plate as perfect as possible. I watched him piling up the arugula, balancing it perfectly only to have it topple over while he wiped the plate. And what did he do? He piled it on again AND wiped the plate. Good music as well that wasn't too loud so you could hear yourself think. I'll definitely be back and listing this among my favorite restaurants in Hong Kong.
