After reading a notorious OpenRicer's review on Sushi Man, godbro XO has been saying that he wants to try Sushi Man, but Yuen Long is like a foreign country to him.  So, instead of giving him a birthday present this year, I decided to treat him to an omakase dinner at Sushi Man!  In addition, I will be his human GPS and navigate with the GPS system in his new car and find our way to Yuen Long!Even though we didn't get lost, it still took us over an hour to reach Sushi Man!  After waiting for a p

Even though we didn't get lost, it still took us over an hour to reach Sushi Man!  After waiting for a parking spot in the meter spaces next to the restaurant, we were almost half an hour late for our reservation.

Since we were late for our reservation, there weren't any sushi bar seats left, so we were seated at a 4-top table towards the inside of the restaurant.

The chopsticks that Sushi Man uses are the ones that you don't have to pull apart, but they are held together with a paper ring.

Since I'm treating him, godbro XO decided not to pick the most expensive Chef's Menu set and chose the $1000 正 menu.

Our dinner started with an ajitama appetizer.

The ajitama was seasoned very well, but the egg yolk was not as velvety as I'd like.

Our sashimi course consisted of four types of fish--a scallop tempura and a sashimi plate with 3 types of fish.

Scallop Tempura: The scallop was cooked perfectly, so it was very tender and slightly raw in the middle.  The nori wrapper was very crispy and added an umami factor.

Sashimi Plate: The yellow jack was very fresh and had a crisp texture.  I'm not usually a fan of clam-type sashimis, so I was pleasantly surprised by the texture of the torigai; it was not as chewy as I thought.  It was actually quite tender.  The toro has a strong tuna flavor and had a pleasant oily texture.

Chawanmushi: The chawanmushi had a natural sweet egg flavor enhanced by the seafood items in it.  The black truffle was quite aromatic, but it wasn't really necessary since the chawanmushi was already tasty on its own.

For our sushi course, there were 5 pieces of nigiri sushi along with 2 pieces of gunkan sushi.

Sushi Plate:  Kinmedai sushi was very tasty and had a smooth velvety texture.  Maguro sushi was, of course, not as oily as the toro, but it had a more distinct tuna flavor.  Grill Karasugarei Fin sushi had a silky texture from the grilling, and the grilling also made the fish flavor more prominent.  Arkshell sushi has never been a favorite of mine, so this was ok.  Mackerel vinegar sushi is a favorite of my brother's, but I didn't really like it since the ones I've had before were too acidic, but the one at Sushi Man wasn't too sour, and the vinegar didn't overpower the fish.

Ikura Sushi: The salmon roe were very large in size, and they were really fresh so they popped open easily in my mouth, and the flavor was awesome!  Some of the best ikura I've ever had!

Uni sushi: The gunkan was filled to the brim with sea urchin.  The uni had a nice pungent flavor.  The uni gunkan felt like an indulgence in my mouth.

Negitoro Hand Roll: This hand roll was a perfect combination of crispy nori, luxurious toro, and perfectly seasoned sushi rice.

Dessert--White Wine Poached Tomato with White Wine Jelly:  Godbro XO and I were very surprised to see tomato as a dessert!  It turned out to be one of the highlights of the whole meal!  The poaching process really brought out the natural sweetness of the tomato, and the white wine jelly had a clear grape flavor and wasn't bitter at all!

For those of us that grew up living on Hong Kong island, Yuen Long seems very far away to go to for a meal.  However, Sushi Man lives up to its claim to fame, and we had a wonderful omakase dinner for XO's birthday (birthmonth)!
