I've been frequenting this type of bean curd & tofu shop since high school, which was quite a long while ago. There are a number of these shops scattered around Hong Kong. They sell nothing but bean products such as fried tofu with fish paste, soya bean milk and sweet bean curd soup. Most of these shops also do simple fried noodles, peanuts congee and may even sell their home made chilly sauce or fermented tofu. Fried tofu with fish meat is one of the more unassuming classic Hong Kong snacks.
We originally intended to try out the "Ippudo" at Causeway Bay but because we were too hungry, we were attracted by this little shop and stood there to look at how the cook fried the tofu. One of the staff invited us in and that's how we settled for this nostalgic option instead!
At the time of writing, it's HK$12 dollars for four rather large pieces of tofu. They were very crispy on the outside but soft inside. The tofu were fresh. The fish paste embedded in each tofu was very chewy as well. The tofu mixed very well with either the soy sauce or the chilly sauce (which is more sweet than spicy).
The fried noodle was also HK$12 dollars per plate. It's a bit bigger than a normal bowl of rice. It's fried with soy sauce, beansprout and chopped fried tofu. It's nothing fancy but tasty and filling.
We also had a cold sweet bean curd soup with ginger juice. The taste of the tofu itself was rather light but I have no complaints. It's fine.
It's also interesting to see the experienced (in life) waiters shouting orders at each other. The cooks must have been using some sort of memory technique to be able to remember all the rapid orders. It's quite a sight to see. All the staff were friendly to the customers and were polite.
The place, like most shops of this type, are small but brightly lit and clean.
If you happen to be in Causeway Bay and feel like a quick snack at a reasonable price, you might want to try this shop out. Soy products are good for you health!
