在蘇豪一帶,我和朋友們經常都駐足的地方,很多時侯都會選擇到西式食店點個牛扒、呷一下紅酒,但是,近日開始試一下其他類型的食肆,在喝蘇豪Sake、吃串燒會是甚麼樣?走到荷里活道,一家裝潢比較走型格路線的,就是今次的駐腳點。豪不猶豫先點一支大Sake - 南部美人大吟醸,酒香馥郁,口感柔順,可以為今次的串燒夜作一個很好的開始;然後各色各樣的串燒端到桌上,包括Angus rib、大蝦、羊架、牛舌等等,其質素完全反映出它們用上比較新鮮和上好的食材,串燒又烤得剛好且原汁原味。最推介的是這裡的烤羊架,羊架帶香草味且羶味輕,肉汁豐富且口感絕佳。最後要多點一支大sake,來配襯美味的食物。雖說價錢比一般的高一點,但食物質素絕對是above average。

The name refers to the three partners of the restaurant.  I did not have much expectation when I first arrived to be honest. I was expecting to have a drink (or two) and just to try out a few yakirotis. But I was very pleasantly surprised after the first few yakitoris and kept on ordering afterwards. Certainly no monkeying around here.

Stylish decor:

About 8 bar seats, 4 tables for two, 3-4 tables for 4 and a second level for many more. Spacious with reasonably comfortable seats.

Drinks menu:

Not as Japanese as I had expected it to be. But at least they serve two to three types of Sochu and Awamori (Kura & two others), 4-5 types of sake, red, white & bubbly. They also have frozen Kirin and other draught beers, which is great.

For sochu, they have "Tomi no Hozan" & "ICHIGO super". It's about $55 per glass and about $350 per bottle. The price per bottle is fairly reasonable as most Izakayas in Hong Kong charge about the same price.

Food menu:

They apparently use a very special type of grill from Tokyo. I'm not familiar with that to be honest.

They have mainly skewers with some very interesting starters and cooked food such as kimchi fried rice. On average, it's about $35 per skewer.



Piman: (Actually it's shishitou. Piman is bell pepper. ) Lightly seasoned with sea salt and a light layer of dashi. Can be a bit hot because of the seeds.

Tsukune: Two patties per order, served with egg sauce and garnish. Some soft bones inside each chicken patty. Pretty good. Already much bettter than those at Konpachi for example.

Tanuki: This is the first time I've seen this in a yakitori menu. Actually it was shiitake mushrooms stuffed with minced chicken meat and sprinkled with bonito. This was very good. The shiitake was juicy and mixed very well with the minced chicken meat.

Nankotsu: Chicken softbones. Nice and crunchy. It's easy to overcook it but this was good.

Nagasaki Chicken Neck: This was unlike any chicken neck which I've tried before. For one, it's much thicker than normal. The taste was quite complex. It seemed to me that some herbs had been added to it. Recommended.

Lamb chops ($88): Very good. Succulent and tasty. It's about medium. With mustard and garnish. I enjoyed it. Definitely worth a try.

Okura: (Photos not avaiable.) Probably from Africa. Good timing and tasty with a thin layer of dashi. It's very good for one's health.

Grilled scallops: The scallops were probably from Hokkaido. It could have been a bit more succulent but on the whole, no complaints.

The service was very good. The waiters were friendly and efficient.

We must have had about 6-8 glasses of red and a glass of Sochu. The bill came down to about $800 per head, which I think is reasonable considering the amount of food we've had and the location of the restaurant.

Even though three monkeys did not have as many choices as some "specialist" yakitori places, the quality of their yakitoris is certainly one of the better ones on Hong Kong Island. I prefer here than Konpachi or Bicho. 

Perfect for drinks and some good quality yakitori or even a full meal.

I am a big fan of "Yaki" (Japanese grilled food) and we used to hop around town to locate the good ones.  As recommended by a friend, we came to the Three Monkeys.  I was a bit uncomfortable by the style of this restaurant since it's basically a pub on the ground floor whilst there are about 6 tables on 2nd floor for the food seatings.  I am more into the authentic Japanese grill restaurant than this type of Westernized Japanese one.  I was shocked to find that there's no Japanese menu available

 I am more into the authentic Japanese grill restaurant than this type of Westernized Japanese one.  I was shocked to find that there's no Japanese menu available for the Sake menu.  I have to google the Sake in English to understand it's type.  Well, the waitress knows nothing about the Sake and limited knowledge to recommend a wine.  We were somewhat disappointed and debated whether we should order one or two dishes and set off for another restaurant.  Consequently, we stayed and tried their food coz we believe they should be up to standard. I just wanna highlight 2 dishes here:

2) Minced chicken with egg – that’s a signature dish from the restaurant and we liked it very much as well since the egg diluted the fatty/filling element of the minced chicken. We did order a couple more dish like the grilled fugu and pork wrap yet they were not impressive at all.

To sum up, this is an interesting restaurant and more appealing to the expats…go to the authentic Japanese restaurant if you are looking for something serious.

琴晚係同女朋友去一週年紀念,於是去 左上環荷李活道 食 左 間 好貴 嘅餐廳 。 環境非常靚 一望已經知道銀包會大出血 , 不過我間唔中式下都唔錯 間餐廳係 食 日本野 , 入到去食左d 串燒, 係我咁大個仔食最貴既串燒 (雖然都係預左貴) 都係我食過最好味既串燒, 點左一個好彈牙嘅牛舌 牛味好重 真係好好味 再食多一個免冶雞肉棒,都好正好好味!!! 另一樣係生牛肉烏冬,d烏冬真係好滑,同D牛肉甲到不得了 , 叫左兩杯唔知係乜既飲品 都幾好飲!!! 咁樣食左幾串串燒已經要一千二百幾蚊買單, 雖然真係幾好食!!!

Wow. It’s been a really long time since I ate something and was speechless. I already had a good impression of the restaurant after being greeted by our friendly hostess, Elaine. After taking my first bite of the Foie Gras Tofu, I fell in love.Between the two of us, we went ordered the Foie Gras Tofu (we went for seconds), Kurobuta Belly, Gyu Tongue, Asparagus wrapped with Pork and the Bacon Okra. Between the two of us, we went ordered the Foie Gras Tofu (we went for seconds), Kurobuta Belly, Gyu Tongue, Asparagus wrapped with Pork and the Bacon Okra. For dessert, we ordered the salted caramel ice cream with cookie bits and raspberry sorbet.
Highlights:
1. Foie Gras Tofu: I fell in love after my first bite and was completely, utterly speechless. I haven’t had food where all I was left with was a “wow” in such a long time. The light, crisp texture from the skin of the pan-fried tofu complemented the softer textures of the foie gras and the tofu really well. The sauce was the perfect amount of sweetness that made the dish truly amazing. We ended up ordering seconds, even though the hostess recommended that we share one so we can save room for the other dishes. I’m already looking back to revisiting the Three Monkeys because of this dish!

2. Gyu Tongue: The Gyu Tongue was very delicious as well. I’ve only tried thin slices of gyu tongue at barbecues. The thick, juicy, tender cut served at Three Monkeys was amazing as well. The mouthful of chewy gyu tongue served with a peppercorn sauce on the side left a lasting impression.

3. Okra Bacon: Who doesn’t love bacon, especially when it’s served as a “healthier” dish, wrapped around okra? I wasn’t a big fan of okra before so when it amazed me when I fell in love with this dish. The bacon might have played a big role.

4. Ice Cream: The Salted Caramel Ice Cream with Cookie bits is a definite must-try. Since salted-caramel tends to be overly sweet and filling after the first few bites, adding cookie bits to it made it much, much easier to finish the entire scoop. The raspberry sorbet was of course, the perfect, refreshing dessert to finish the dinner with.

Disappointments:
1. Kurobuta Belly: Well, pork belly is just pork belly. It wasn’t particularly bad but there was no wow factor. The Kurobuta Belly would have scored a fairly good rating on its own but since it’s being compared to other amazing dishes (Foie Gras Tofu, Gyu Tongue), it had to go on the disappointment list.

I really do look forward to revisiting Three Monkeys (hopefully in December)! I cannot wait to order the Foie Gras Tofu again and I’ll make sure that I have one all to myself the next time!

GYU-Tongue (Their most popular dish..and I’ll tell you why… Viv doesn’t eat this…so LUCKY ME!! I got the whole ox-tongue! Woo Hoo! Celebrate life’s mini victories, people! So- it was a thick slice grilled with a light salt and pepper seasoning. The tongue was beautifully crispy round the edges while amazingly fatty and tender inside. MELT IN YOUR MOUTH GOODNESS.
Tomato Bacon (A juicy cherry tomato enveloped by a thick, crispy and crunchy piece of simply seasoned salt and pepper bacon strip…. Sweet, juicy and a burst of flavor in your mouth!

Lobster Chawamushi-Lobster Steamed Egg Custard w/ Black Truffles- This was DELICIOUS. But be careful. It’s really hot and upon arriving- practically burned my tongue Lesson of the night. Patience. The plump lobster mixed in perfectly with the rich lump of black truffles. The egg custard was so fluffy and creamy….divine!!!!!!

I like going to Three monkeys be it just for drinks or a proper sit down dinner; the vibe is always fun, cozy and lively. You could start your night getting custom blend Japanese style cocktail at the bar downstairs. I love the Sakura, which is made of Awamori, it was deceivingly easy to drink, but I was super buzzed after 3 glasses of it. Besides spoiling patrons with the choices of drinks, three monkeys also serves delectable yakatori, one of their secret weapon is the handcrafted grill forged by ironmonger Kama- Asa from Kappabashi Japan. It can heat up to 850 degrees which allows food to be cooked in a very short time, retaining the freshness and the original flavor of the ingredients; there’s also a flow of fresh water running under that grill so oil and grease that drips down doesn’t collect and give a greasy smell or taste. The water also create steam which helps keep the grilled items moist.

I LOVE the Lobster chawanmushi (steamed egg); once we removed the lid we were hit by the intense aroma of black truffle which lingers in the air as we consumed the decadent dish; the steamed egg silky smooth and the lobster firm, and juicy. I enjoyed every bite/ slurp of it.

Foie gras tofu toast -Both the tempura tofu and the pan-seared foie gras were crispy on the outside and soft and smooth on the inside. The lightness in tofu balances the richness of foie gras.

The Kalbi Beef was like yakitori with a Korean twist, the marinade made the deliciously tender short rib even more rich and decadent with both savory and sweet flavors.

Angus rib was flavorful, succulent and tender, topped with daikon ponzu dressing and spring onions.

I don’t touch Ox tongue but friends loved three monkey’s ox tongue! Their ox tongue is different from the other yakitori’s in that they are cut much thicker, the grill that was mentioned earlier allows them to grill the thick cuts to perfection. The end result was melting tender and meaty. They also serve it with whole grain mustard which brings a kick to it

The outside of the yam was slightly browned and almost caramelized and moist on the inside. They were so good on their own I din even touch the butter that comes with it.

The tomato wrapped in bacon was a melting pot of flavors and textures! Crispy savory-peppery bacon VS the sweet juicy cheery tomato.

I was excited about the tiger prawn but the topping (Uni with mayo paste) was a little too overwhelming and overshadowed the subtle sweetness of the fresh tiger prawn.

Tada… dessert time, I don’t typically eat much ice cream or anything cold but I had three fat scopes of their homemade gelato all by myself- the Pistacchio, the Hokkaido Milk and the Stracciatella. They were all very smooth, creamy and velvety with the pistachio being my favorite.

Finally got to try Three Monkeys I've heard mixed comments about the service but personally after the meal I don't agree with the negative comments at all! The service was efficient and friendly. I don't know whether it's because I ate during the earlier time slot on a weekday, so they weren't as busy. Hopefully they kept it up throughout the night.After taking a look at the drinks menu (they offer A LOT of drinks, both cocktails and craft beer) I decided to stick to my friend's recommendation

I don't know whether it's because I ate during the earlier time slot on a weekday, so they weren't as busy. Hopefully they kept it up throughout the night.

After taking a look at the drinks menu (they offer A LOT of drinks, both cocktails and craft beer) I decided to stick to my friend's recommendation and ordered Umeshu Sour. The drink consisted of Shochu, Umeshu, Egg White and Lemon Juice and was amazingly good. It's on the sweet side so perfect for girls. My friend ordered the Japanese Monk, it was a bit stronger but was refreshing as it was infused with lychee.

This came first and seconds after it was placed onto the table the smell of the foie gras drifted towards me. The foie gras was soft and filled with flavour which matched well with the fried tofu.

A bunch of skewers came together after.

I absolutely love love love the Tsukune. Despite it not being anything fancy (it's chicken and egg after all), I made a second order after finishing off the first one
The minced chicken tasted amazing especially after mixing with the sauce and egg yolk.

Really enjoyed this place. Can't wait to go again for the Umeshu Sour and Tsukune!

We were given the menus - first impression, awesome design. Drink menu not so, we were told its a rough copy as the real drink menu is being printed. My friends and I all ordered the Monkey Business - one of the most popular drinks here. Its bacon infused bourbon whisky, made into a whisky sour. This drink was heavenly good - very smoky. We then found out the bar tender use to work in MO Bar. +1 point

Next onto the food. The food was great. Everything was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Although we did have a item that was sold out (it was 8ish), but we got everything else we wanted. What stood out was the Foie Gras and Tofu Toast, jaw dropping good - i am quite sure many people who have tried this will agree. The sauce is amazing! Kept it and used it for alot of my yakiroti dishes
. OX Tongue was a winner, thick cut, huge chunks and seasoned perfect. I dont think you can find a better OX Tongue in HK, maybe Beco but price for value, this kills it. The Belly wraps also a winner - korean styled. +4

Service. I wouldnt give it 100%, but definitely not as bad as what these people are talking about. We had a server who watched over our table and was attentive to every need. Her explnation of dishes was somewhat choppy but thats forgiveable. Food came out quick and dishes were cleared throughout the meal. There is room for improvement like in any establishment, but no complaints for our table. Atmosphere was amazing, amazing, AMAZING. You see people throughout the restaurant shazamming the music - they have a very very good playlist here. Not sure if they have a DJ or whatnot, but the atmosphere of the restaurant was great. Awesome vibes. +3

I would definitely come back again, maybe im one of the lucky people who had a great time here, and to the people who dont like this place at all, i would say they are missing out. Food is great, authentic yakitori nothing too fancy as to what many people in SOHO area like to eat, piping hot dishes, delicious drinks. If I had to complain it would be that we had a 8 - 10 minute wait time before we could be seated cause they were setting up the table as a table left before us which is fine.

Oh one last thing, we got a round of free shots cause of the wait. +1

Not very together since they have been open for a few months. The service was uneven with several waitresses supposedly covering our table but forgetting to bring some of the food items and drinks we had ordered. The food itself was OK -- meaning this is chicken, meat, shell fish on skewers grilled so not exactly haute cuisine and there was nothing inventive about the menu items, especially since they were out of about 1/3rd of the menu. The atmosphere was trendy and loud, and clearly the emphasis was not on service or the food. The table next to ours had cardboard boxes for chairs and one party refused to take the table (can you blame them). In sum, the food was forgettable and the complete lack of service at an all time low.

Ok?" i think we need to train HK hostess to say, "table will only be available until 8pm, is that all right with you?" - ordered their signature dish - tsukune and a whole lot of other skewers... But by 720pm, the tsukune still did not land on my table. So, we asked the waitress, and then they told us, tsukune is sold out today!! The manager came to explain that it was all taken for a big party yesterday and lots of food and drinks are sold out.... I think they have no proper inventory management.

- Manager apologized and gave two shots of vodka as compensation. Hence, we ordered something else at 735pm and told her to speed it up since we were told to leave by 8pm. She said, no worries! Stay as long as you want.

- the additional orders of food arrived at our table at 755pm but the group next to our table start to arrive staggeredly. Hostess said to the guests, "you can sit first, this table should leave by 8pm, i told them already from the start.". Hmmm.... That makes me mad.

- at 810pm, we thought we will end the session with my favorite warabi-mochi.... Ordered and waited for 10minutes. What came to us was the check and not the warabi mochi. Hahaha! Thats a joke. We checked the bill... Did not charge the warabi-mochi, so we decided to pay up and leave.

- while waiting for the change, another waitress came by and asked if we want to order any dessert. She was also the same waitress who took our warabi-mochi order. When we told her we did order but did not arrive, she ran to the kitchen and found the plate of dessert and land it on our table. And said "sorry, they did not serve you."

- hostess happened to be on the floor and look to us who was telling the waitress that whole messed up service we just experienced and she was hoping to step in and take control of the situation by saying, "i did tell you that you need to leave by 8pm!". So, i told her, the manager said something else, because of all that wrong order, missed order, slow service, food not arriving yet, etc... Etc...." and she was dumbfold after that.

If i am the owner of the restaurant, i will not hire this bunch of inexperienced service team that has just cost me the opportunity to make more money on a saturday night!!! As a customer, sorry for myself, because we just paid for the bill, paid their electricity and salary, but left angrily. Spending money should always be a happy experience, but this one did not turn out that way. 3 out of 5 for the food... Tasty in general. 1 out of 5 for service. Not sure if i will return again.

After asking for different seating we were informed there was nothing else available even though we had made the booking several weeks in advance.

Once the service began things appeared to pick up, however after taking the full tables' food and drink order (which took the staff approximately 30 minutes), we were continually visited with information about dishes that we had ordered that were not available. With no exaggeration we only received 40% of what we ordered with the only explanation from the management of "we're sorry. But we had a big night last night". I'm happy for the people who were able to enjoy the restaurant the previous night, but as a paying customer I would have appreciated a heads ups that I was not going to have the same experience before I arrived with my party of 15.

After a thoroughly embarrassing series of interactions trying to order food only to be denied, we decided to cut our losses, close out the bill and move on (actually to find a location to grab a bite as everyone was thoroughly dissatisfied). When we asked for the bill we were sure to review it as most of the items we had ordered had not arrived. Sure enough there was a multitude of items on the bill that we had either not received or in many cases not even ORDERED. as an example there was a drink on the bill where there were three that were ordered but 9 appeared on the bill. Needless to say we were very frustrated with the experience at this point.

We asked to speak with the manager to voice our concern after which we noticed that the three partners of the group were in attendance. We vocalized our disgust with the manager and waitstaff several times and even after we watched them confer with the owner, the owner did not even have the common decency to stop by our table to speak with us after we had asked to give him feedback. They were totally finite tested in us, our experience, and our satisfaction. It was a slap in the face for an absolutely terrible experience. We had heard mixed reviews before going and I only wish I took the negatives more seriously.


I would strongly recommend skipping this place. If you go, beware. It might be an experience you will soon regret. The owners clearly have no real interest in making sure that your dining experience is a good one.

We ordered the following:

1) Ox tongue skewers
This was the first dish that arrived. There were 4 large piece on one skewer, which already was not appetising. Though it was thick cut, it was far too chewy and really reminded us we were gnawing through an ox's tongue... which should not be the case when this dish is done well.

2) Grilled corn
Nothing special.

3) Monkey Fried Rice
Extremely bland, no flavor. This was served to us at room temperature, not hot. The waitress also forgot to bring us spoons and bowls. Mid-way through, a very nice and helpful guy offered us bowls/spoons and apologised profusely.

4) Foie Gras on Tofu
Interesting combination, this was one dish we all agreed was tasty.

5) Chicken & Egg Skewer
Too crunchy for my liking - it was okay but not memorable.

Although we were still hungry, we were turned off by the fact that none of the dishes arrived hot, and that the service was all over the place. We had an additional order of chicken wings, but the waitress forgot. When asked what was on tap, she also had no idea (there were only two things on tap). It was clear she was new which is forgivable, but never at any point did she come over to ask how everything is going - instead, we saw the two waitresses giggling in the corner over their text messages.

Even worse, after we had asked for the bill, the waitress (a different one from the above) asked my friend if he would like another beer... AFTER he just asked her for the bill and she acknowledged it.

The bill came to about $1300 for 4 unsatisfied people. Definitely not worth the hype.
