At first glance, La Cuisine Rouge looks almost like a mirror image of Barolo across the road, except that it seems to be always empty, unlike its neighbor. The restaurant features classic southern French cuisine. Generally speaking, food there is quite average, and there's nothing surprising on the menu. However, the staff are friendly enough and it does have a cozy atmosphere which is great for relaxing and people watching.
The decor of this French restaurant features an open front, a few tall wooden round tables matched with some red bar stools at the entrance and some more formal dining tables when you walk in. The bar is in the back. There are photos of Paris hung on the brick walls and there's one wall lined with wines. Somehow there's extraneous little decorative items, like lamps with fake crystals, plastic grapevine leaves and a TV screen playing videos of Jamie Oliver. These strange details look somewhat of out of place in this restaurant.
We tried the set lunch there in the afternoon, when there were no other customers. The set included a Mushroom Soup and Ling Fish in Creamy Sauce. The mushroom soup is rich, with plenty of fresh mushroom pieces, yet not too overwhelmingly strong. The Ling Fish is very firm, and tastes quite good with the creamy sauce which is rich in herbs. However, the side dish, hash browns and boiled veggies were just plain boring. Moreover, the veggies were over-boiled and tasted very bland.
The wait staff are attentive enough and they know the menu quite well. At the end of the meal, one of them came over and to ask if everything was ok with the meal, which earned some brownie points for service.
Browsing the a la carte menu, one will find it quite limited. For instance, there are only 2 seafood options and 4 other main dishes, which are all very standard items such as Grilled chicken, duck breast or steak. Their entrees include the familiar ones such as Pan seared Foie Gras and Escargots, and so as their desserts, which features Custard Pudding, Cheese Platter and French Toast with Vanilla Ice Cream. All in all, the overall experience in La Cuisine Rouge is quite average. However, if you want to have a quick quite lunch, catching up with some work at peace, this restaurant may not be a bad choice.
