這家位於灣仔聖法蘭士街新開業沒多久,已經有不少飲食達人推介過。為了避開等位情況,我們決定提早吃晚飯。餐廳座位並不多,他們有個半室外的設計我非常喜歡,環境佈置、氣氛、員工服務都非常好。餐牌的食品不算多,經過店員推介了幾款食品,最後我們點了四款食品。先來一個頭盤醃菜。Hummus 新鮮烘焙的彼得包和他們特別調製的鷹嘴豆蓉,羊肉味不酥,豆蓉打得好軟滑,配上香口彼得包,非常滋味。我不吃羊也接受喔!Falafel 接著的是大家耳熟能詳的中東小食falafel,炸得香脆,香料和豆粒非常匹配,不能不吃喔!有一點奇怪,這個份量只有三件?但我們看其他食評應該有四件的,有人偷吃了嗎?Smoked Carrots香甜蜜糖煙燻甘荀,加上杏仁醬汁,好吃到根接一根。必試Wagyu Hanger這個wagyu hanger 真是太好吃了!燒得剛剛好,外面有焦香,內𥚃肉質超嫰,肉汁香濃,値得推介!總括這家餐廳無論在佈置、食物、飲料及服務非常滿意,而且價錢合理。看得出廚師用心烹調和對食物的要求。期待下次試其他的食品,必定再次光顧!

接著的是大家耳熟能詳的中東小食falafel,炸得香脆,香料和豆粒非常匹配,不能不吃喔!有一點奇怪,這個份量只有三件?但我們看其他食評應該有四件的,有人偷吃了嗎?

總括這家餐廳無論在佈置、食物、飲料及服務非常滿意,而且價錢合理。看得出廚師用心烹調和對食物的要求。期待下次試其他的食品,必定再次光顧!

$360能食 set dinner , 還可以投訴什麼?雖然時間趕短,staff不斷上菜,沒明示但你懂的,反正亦不宜久坐,最好客人亦自己識做叫酒水幫襯.....但說真的,在灣仔、這價錢、這麼多道小菜,味道亦有中上至一般,我還是覺得抵食!

Had to wait almost 2 hours; they don’t have a booking policy, but this was ridiculous. Finally seated 45 mins later than planned. The Manager has a bad attitude and was very rude. Tried to order as we were (understandably) very hungry, but were told it was too much food. Finished food but were still hungry, but were told kitchen had closed at 10.30! 15 mins after we were seated. This is unacceptable. Food quality good (albeit small portions) EVERYTHING ELSE NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED!

1. Again, generous portion with 3 pieces of awesome Chicken Schnitzel.
2. The Chicken Schnitzel is freshly fried with crispy skin, tender and juicy meat inside.
3. Flavoured with coarse salt and spring onion on top, which is already very good.
4. The aioli on the side just makes the whole dish taste more wonderful.

value for money 成日排長龍,但$360就有廚師排板既 set dinner , 今時今日又真係算唔錯,而且 location 係 wanchai ,都無乜投訴囉。整體中東菜水平雖唔算好好,但起碼合格,綜合價錢因素,我個人幾滿意。反而,having said that , D女食客好狼死,一個撩調酒師,一個仲起勢用手摸個男服務員,摸完左邊條腰,再摸埋右邊。家陣係去食正經中東菜吖,你估去鴨bar 咩?!難得2個服務員若無其事任你抽,但其他人睇見都眼冤。

平時很少會吃甘筍的小弟,居然對這盤Smoked Carrots而著迷,好吃得一根接一接,表面帶有誘人的燻香,爽口的質感則與甜美的蜜味相結合,做出了一道看似簡單而又美味的食物。

Chicken Schnitzel的出現,令小弟覺得有點肉感了,吉列雞扒炸得薄身鬆脆,蘸上特製的aioli會覺得更為味美。

最後的也是一道肉菜式,小弟在不太清有羊肉的情況下品嚐了Kafta。居然在有羶香之下,也嚐到了牛肉的鮮味,兩者混合的比例卻然超出了預期,連不吃羊的小弟也嚐到了芬芳無比的肉香。

來到甜品時間,店員送來了一個鳥巢般的Knafeh,其實它是一道炸水牛芝士,表面香脆可口,內裡軟滑,配合冰凍的雪糕,幾種不同的層次雲集在一起,好不過隱。

其實這兒真是一間小酒館,供應了多款店主的推介,當中也有不少值得推介的啤酒,喜歡喝酒品嚐美食的朋友絕對不要錯過了。

I have to tell you straight up, I’m not a connoisseur of Middle Eastern cuisine; although I’ve some Isreali friends that swear that the food in Tel Aviv is some of the best in the world.

So I grabbed some friends with a bit more experience with all foods Middle Eastern and made a pilgrimage (well, short stroll) to one of Hong Kong’s hottest new restaurants, Francis.

Head Chef Asher Goldstein is part of a trio of lads who have established the no reservations spot in St Francis Street & has taken inspiration from his childhood memories.  Using ingredients and flavours from the Middle East, Chef Asher’s menu is a kaleidoscope of foods that could be found on the bustling streets of Tel Aviv, Israel.

Knowing it was a no reservations joint, we made sure to arrive a good thirty minutes before the kitchen was open, but only just snagged the last four available seats – which were superb.  Right on the open windows at the front of the restaurant, we were able to watch the world pass by as we waited for the kitchen to open.

While we waited, we were given a plate of curried and pickled vegetables to snack on, quite an interesting set of flavours and textures.  While we snacked away, we started to plan which of the delicious looking menu items we would order to share.

As the clock struck 6 pm, we called our waiter over to take our order, smashing out quite a comprehensive list of delectable options.  One small disappointment at the ordering stage was the unavailability of the grilled octopus; however, we were informed that the octopus was just not up to being served, we gave a mental shrug and ordered the lamb (more on that later).

We’d ordered a truckload of food anyway 🙂

First up was the Veal Cigars with red pepper and caraway, the four deep-fried pastry covered sticks of veal having an oriental ‘spring roll’ look about them.  Placed haphazardly in a bowl, the red pepper and caraway sauce sitting vibrant on the plate, they looked eminently appealing.  There was a deep earthy flavour of the shredded veal and the golden coating was crisp, but it was the addition of that sauce that helped them shine.

Out next, was the Burnt Eggplant with pepper, chilli and yoghurt; which admittedly looked lovely, but was a dish I avoided (yeah, not a fan of eggplant!).  While I didn’t even try it, nods from around the table and comments that I was missing out told me that the dish was spot on (if you like that type of thing!)

One of the most amazing dishes I’ve had in a long time appeared up next, not only did the Baked Halloumi with pomegranate molasses and wild oregano look spectacular, it was also heavenly to consume.  The deep red of the pomegranate seeds covering the light yellow of the halloumi seemed perfectly suited to the cast iron deep dish they were presented in.  I loved the sticky molasses in comparison to the texture and bite of the pomegranate, then the smooth creamy and ever so slightly rubbery texture of the cheese.  I definitely loved the dish, the simplicity of its composition and its amazing taste; so I ate most of it (sorry guys!)

A lot of people find chicken hearts quite confrontational, but we ordered them anyway; arriving shishkebab style on skewers, the small meaty and expertly cooked chicken hearts were well received by the table.  I loved the slightly minerally flavour of the hearts and found myself finishing off the remaining few once the table had had their fill.

I was pretty much on my own when the whole Sardine with fennel, white bean, tomato and ‘nduja’ appeared.  I quite like sardines, but even I was a little bit confronted by the size of that bad boy sardine!  It had largely been deboned, but even so, it was still a little difficult to eat (with big size comes big bones) – and it was seriously hot (spicy) from the nduja (spicy salami) – It wasn’t my favourite and not something I’d order again.

We were back on track with a simply stunning dish, a special of the kitchen and a dish that changed components (although not spirit) regularly.  Burek was pastry filled with fetta and accompanied by the most amazing tomato sauce you could hope to taste.  The crunch of the pastry, when combined with the flakey fetta and sauce reminded me of the taste of a Margherita pizza, so it went down really well.  It was a definite favourite at the table and something that we contemplated ordering again!

We were on a roll with another table favourite looking beautiful as it was placed on our table.  The Wagyu Hanger spiced butter was a super simple dish, but the quality of beef, along with expert cooking left us in awe of the dish.  A caramelisation of the beef blended wonderfully with the tender centre that was a perfect medium rare; the addition of the spiced butter lending a creamy richness to the earthy beef.  It wasn’t as fatty as you’d expect from Wagyu, but I personally didn’t mind!

We’d had a few super dishes but not all of them were table pleasers; one of the disappointing dishes of the night was probably the simplest.  While I didn’t partake in the Hummus with chickpea and lamb neck ragu (you guessed it, no chickpeas for me!), it wasn’t a winner with my dining companions either, with the feeling that it was a little dry…

The Chicken Schnitzel with za’atar and aioli split the table as well.  Personally, I simply loved the simplicity of the schnitzel, especially with the light and delicious aioli smeared over the top.  The crumbs were golden and crispy, the dish was seasoned to perfection and it really hit the spot; oh well, not everyone can love everything, so it gave me more of the schnitzel to devour!

It seemed as if we’d finished the savoury part of our meal, our dishes were cleared away, but something was nagging at the back of my mind.  I asked our waiter if we were finished and he confirmed we had……  But, we reflected after our desserts that we’d ordered the Lamb Ribs with orange, yoghurt and coriander – but it never came.

We debated if it was a good thing though, we were pretty darn stuffed from the meal & we still had dessert to go.

Interestingly, there were two desserts on the menu, one a savoury and the other a sweeter option.  We ordered two of the sweeter Knafeh, deep fried mozzarella with orange blossom and pistachio, along with the savoury Spiced Quince with olive oil, bay leaf cream and sumac.  While both dishes were really good, it was the ‘savoury’ spiced quince that was our favourite (and we thought a little sweeter to boot!)

It did leave Alex and Aaron a little disappointed as they’d been raving about how spectacular a good knafeh could be…  They rated the Francis version as good – which left me wondering what a spectacular version might taste like!

I think I’m a convert!

There were some spectacular flavours from our meal at Francis, in particular, that halloumi dish, which I could have eaten all night.  I definitely loved most of what I ate, with the exception of the sardine, and I know the guys had some quibbles with the hummus as well.

However, when we received the bill for the night, we were particularly pleased..  It felt like we’d ordered most of the menu and a heap of drinks, yet the total bill was much lower than we’d expected.  We checked through and it had everything we’d ordered (and didn’t have the lamb), and it was bang on.  So the value at Francis was superb.

Will I eat there again?  Absolutely, not only is it just around the corner from my apartment, it’s cheap and delicious – I’d be crazy not to!

Get along and check it out, you won’t be disappointed!

It was my daughter birthday and I took her to this fancy restaurant to have dinner. We seat at the counter outside. I have ordered eggplant, mussels, sardine and octopus for starter. After that I have ordered the lamb rib and dumpling for main. All the food were delicious. Specially the mussels were very fresh with their home made sauce and the lamb rib was so juicy and tender that I never try before. Also, the price was reasonable. Overall, that is a very great experience. For sure, I must be b

Truth be told, Mrs A wasn’t alone in her ignorance of what to expect from Francis. ‘Inspired by Tel Aviv street food’ also did little to conjure culinary images in my mind’s eye.

The new Star Street restaurant seems to take certain liberties with its interpretation of Middle-Eastern cuisine, adopting an Ottoman demarcation of the region. With chicken schnitzel, calamari salad, panna cotta and, of course, hummus, the brunch set menu sprawled from the Austrian Tirol to the Greek Islands and back again. But I am neither a pedant nor a puritan. As long as the food is cooked with a bit of heart and a dash of flair, I’m happy to indulge in a little culinary narrative license. 

We rocked up to Francis Street on their first Sunday of service expecting to be politely turned away or asked to wait a few hours (there’s obviously a no booking policy). But we had a choice of tables and, with it being a beautiful mid-February day, we decided to perch in the window, half in (her), half out (me).

Sadly, the set brunch menu included none of the more interesting dishes from the al la carte options; there was no veal cigar, no curd and no stuffed
mussel. So, with a quaffable glass of red we waited for the prescribed dishes to arrive.

Naturally, the hummus was placed down first. It had none of the traits of your typical grainy, beige slurry. It was clean, nutty and fresh. It was also lusciously smooth and buttery. So smooth in fact, I suspect the scales were tipped heavily away from chickpeas towards top shelf olive oil and tahini. The moist dense focaccia was fairly unremarkable, but it performed its role of hummus scoop adequately enough.

The baked halloumi arrived in a blistering pan of pomegranate seeds and molasses. The sizzle and silt may have masked any significant flavour of Halloumi, but we both scraped the top layer from the iron skillet attempting to get every last bit of the molten treacle. 

The falafel was course, crunchy and crumbled into the tahini, yielding a scrumptious cement like mixture. Before we knew it, the small plates were
empty, and we both wore Cheshire cat smiles.

Francis is the brainchild of Asher Goldstein (chef), Simone Sammuri (sommelier) and  James Ward (front of house). Disenfranchised with the group-dominated HK foodie scene, they’ve gone it alone. In order to create the hottest opening of the year so far, the three amigos have obviously thought long and hard about the dining experience. The music swung effortlessly between Motown and Morcheba. The decor is bang on trend with copious amounts of chrome and a Tom Dixon art deco aesthetic. And the drinks delightful and reasonably priced.  

My main of chicken schnitzel was abnormally fantastic. I can only assume the meat had gone for a swim in a water bath before being coated in golden panko and za'atar, as it was unbelievably light and succulent. It was sadly let down by a small handful of sautéed potatoes which swam in a puddle of their own oil. Mrs A’s Kafta was pretty good too – but what’s not to love about a lamb burger, silky sweet onion and more tahini?

The panna cotta desert sat on top of a sour marmalade type substance, wobbling with the texture of cellulite. It struck the perfect balance of rosemary and rose. Get those flavours wrong and it tastes like chewing on a Lush bath bomb, but get it right and you’re the grateful recipient of a grassy fragrancy – a welcome palate cleanser after a spice laden meal. 

There is something very familiar about Francis. I surveyed the room and racked my brain as to what it might be. Next to us a plump moneyed man of nondescript Eastern European origin was pilfering food off a botoxed blonde’s plate. An impossibly middle class couple were engrossed in conversation obvious to their two children (probably named Jack and Anastacia) running amuck. A young Chinese couple at the bar were happily ignoring each other, flicking between WeChat and their guide book. In short, it was just like being back in London on a sunny spring day.

London on such a day trounces every other place on earth. Sitting in Hyde Park getting giddy on M&S prosecco and pork pies leaves even the most ardent workaholic in happy ignorance of the work week ahead. It may have been the crisp sunny weather, relaxed atmosphere or wonderful food, but that’s exactly how Francis felt on that Sunday afternoon. With nowhere to be and nothing to do, we could not have been more content watching the world go by.

Unfortunately, it won't be long before the heat and humidity will prevent such alfresco afternoons. Sadly, I can’t see Francis having the same appeal when shuttered and stifled with arctic air conditioning. So, my advice would be to get down before the heat and hype rises any further.

Visited during CNY holiday, added to a seating wait list... Patiently waited at a nearby bar for a full hour only to receive a call from the restaurant host advising that “can not accommodate your party due to a lack of food.” Hmmm.... I understand supply deliveries will have been constrained due to CNY, however, I expect much better planning by the establishment. If this is the level of service received before even being seated at a table, I can not imagine the level of poor service I might receive if I actually ate there. No offer to book/reserve a place at a future date without a wait. Won’t waste my time (literally) with this place in the future. If they ask you to wait for a seat when you arrive (longer than 15 - 20 min), best to just find another place to eat. The management clearly has not yet learned how to manage their inventory with demand. Lots of work to do in terms of staff training to manage poor (potential) customer experiences.

幸好餐廳很貼心,有提供飲品給正在等候的客人
雖然餐廳的位置比較少,但餐廳內氣氛,設計佈置,什至員工服務也超級好!!

說真的,這碟烤章魚來的時候我嚇倒了,章魚上全鋪滿辣醬似的。。
幸好原來這款Harissa Sauce 不怎辣,香料味比較特出,烤章魚不韌,口感比較腍身
雖然這碟味道比較濃,但它配著薯餅和小蕃茄,起了個中和作用,別具特色

總括來說這家餐廳給我的感覺無論環境衛生,氣氛和服務態度也很好,最重要吃得出廚師每道菜也很用心去烹調,這家別具特色的中東餐廳,很值得大家去一嘗。而我?當然必定會再次光顧,哈哈

Baked Halloumi
Halloumi是希臘和中東一帶常見的芝士,由於沸點高不易溶,用作烤焗和煎炸的效果都不錯。鐵pan超燙,薄薄的芝士焗至表面乾身,咬下去卻尚帶濕度。芝士香濃,配清甜少少汁的石榴粒就夠平衡。芝士的鹹香,石榴的甜,再加少少oregano的香草味,是一絕的配搭。

茄子的賣相只屬一般,但其實內裡豐富。茄子蓉中混了蕃茄粒、紅椒粒和香草,上面再加乳酪,口感和味道都很有層次。

墊在青口下面的是freekeh,就是麥的一種。先烘乾再弄碎,就可以吃,據聞有大量纖維和營養,不過個人覺得偏硬,硬得只吃了一口便放棄。青口細細隻卻花了很多心機。中間包著餡,外面包了一層透明得幾乎看不見的一層。餐牌上寫著lardo,但沒有見到這種意式火腿的蹤影,入口只吃到青口的嫩滑和鮮甜,並沒有吃到中間夾著甚麼。

烤八爪魚是我幾期待的一道,源於我對意式八爪魚的鍾情。可是,做法原來是完全兩回事。紅色的醬並非想像的蕃茄醬,而是harissa,帶頗濃的辣椒、蒜和香草味,不辣的,帶少少甘,幾特別,跟八爪魚亦夾。不過,八爪魚偏腍的口感對喜歡爽韌的八爪魚的我來說,不怎麼吸引。墊在下面的薯餅很好吃,可以見到一粒一粒的薯仔碎,炸得很香口,表面帶脆,滿有光澤卻不算油膩。

他不吃羊,怕羶。我先吃了一口乳酪,吸了羊的羶香,酸中帶羊羶,對喜歡羊的人來說是只應天上有。一條羊肋骨,表面焗至微硬的肉,中間燜得很腍,連著入口即溶的脂肪,滲出無盡的羊肉香,不算很羶,取了我倆之間的平衡點,大家都滿足。上面加了芫茜做的醬,可以中和一下油脂的羶。

鷹嘴豆打得很細滑,微暖,濕潤,橄㰖油不會太多而味道太搶。豆蓉之中滲著Tahini的芝麻香。把pita bread插進去,畫一個圈,沾上一大堆hummus,再放入口,整個過程的每一步都是一種享受。上面的原粒鷹嘴豆已經煮腍,再配一些味道很淡的羊肉,加點肉顯得更豐富。

蕃薯烤至皮韌,跟肉的腍形成對比。蕃薯很甜,伴paprika的效果很好,平衡了甜度,讓味蕾清楚知道我們還未到甜品環節。淋在上面一粒粒的Israeli couscous,似意大利的fregola,吸了醬汁,少少硬,添上咬口。Paprika的汁調得較濃,把上面的feta弄至少少濕,又同時保留了本來的微微嚡口,味道很夾。

椰菜花的表面滿是燒烤香,烤至微乾,少少焦,中間尚餘點爽口,多汁,味道很清。以tarragon和較稀的乳酪調味,十分清新。

吉列雞扒炸粉十分鬆脆,很輕身,一點都不油膩,揤點檸檬汁,以清新的酸吊一吊味更醒神。雞肉雖然不嚡不韌,但欠鮮味。對於常吃新鮮雞和日式吉列的人來說,實在沒甚特別。這道菜的驚喜在於伴碟的沙律菜,以中東著名、混了好幾種香料做的za'atar和以蒜和橄欖做的aioli,看似coleslaw,卻比coleslaw 清新、健康、好吃。

菜式全部上齊,只剩下最後一道甜點。不夠飽的話可以再加。別看每款都有少少,加上無限添加的麵包,其實都幾飽。再看一次餐牌,最後決定加一道甜品,兩款試勻。

Spiced Quince
Quince像梨又像蘋果,正名是榲桲,又名木梨。沒煮過的蘋果般腍,比梨實和帶粉,即使煮過亦保留口感,比蘋果和梨是較佳的選擇。旁邊的忌廉是bay leave cream。十分輕盈,入口即溶,化成稀身的液體,清香的奶味之中,果然有月桂葉的香,很特別。忌廉上撒了sumac,又是一種中東著名的香料,帶少少酸,跟廉的奶香匹配。

這是我們再加的甜品。還記得在耶路撒冷舊城區,找到一間賣甜點的店。中東的甜品向來都予人過甜,甜度高得過份的印象,但我們的一日遊導遊推介那盤鮮橙色的東西,是我自己經過打死都不會試的knafer。橙色是一絲絲的炸粉,加了糖漿誇張地反光,下面是一層白色。沾滿糖漿是頗甜,但脆得可口,而且下層的芝士實在太好吃,好吃得吃個停,連導遊都要提醒不能多吃,不健康。

這個改良牌多了幾分精緻,沒有過多的糖漿,取而代之是一球雲尼拿雪糕,還帶來一冷一熱,冰火交融的效果。一絲一絲炸得超鬆脆,即使有幾絲掛在嘴邊,也顧不了儀態,只顧陶醉在味蕾的享受。中間是mozzarella,半溶,有少少溶掉的,正中間則尚呈固體,咀嚼之下更是香濃。

餐廳6時開始營業,6點半已經滿座。之後來的食客都點杯酒,在外面邊飲邊等。他們毫無怨言,耐心地等了足足個半鐘,才有第一輪的食客離座。可能最近看得太多內地人大鬧機場的報道,突然覺得他們的堅持、耐性、修養都值得學習。吃完之後也不好意思霸佔座位,不然在這播著音樂,坐在高櫈的環境之下,可以坐上幾小時。

店員友善,每上一道菜都會簡單介紹一下,用了甚麼食材,但有時他們顯得有點趕,介紹似乎過份簡單,可以再多一兩句就更好,但整體服務都不錯。只是$360一位的Let Us Cook,吃得我們飽飽,加甜品和飲品埋單$850,價錢絕對可以接受。

情人節快樂。其實我想告訴你,這不是我們第一次沒有想著要分手的情人節,也不會是最後一次。

We started with the Burnt Eggplant which is served with home made pitta bread straight from the oven, the Baked Halloumi with pomegranate molasses, and the Lamb Ribs which melt in your mouth - utterly divine! For our mains we ordered the Chicken Scnitzel (a must try!) and the Smoked Carrots which were the best carrots I've ever tasted. Who knew that vegetables could be so good. To finish we tried the Spiced Quince dessert which was served with an olive oil crumb and bay leaf cream. This creative dessert was the perfect end to our meal - my only regret was that we didn't order two!

I can't wait to come back and try the other dishes on the menu. I highly recommend this fantastic restaurant to all!!

The carrot dish was definitely a surprise for us, it is not the standard sensory texture you think a carrot would be.  Our perfect meal would not be perfect without any good dessert. My taste buds were not disappointed even though it was highly unlikely we had any room for it. I was completely satisfied with the choice of desserts.
All the food were fresh and the taste are delectable . The chefs take great care in selecting the best quality ingredients with unusual combinations.  Prices are relatively modest, especially given the quality. The restaurant also caters for all tastes by providing a large selection of the best wines at a fairly reasonable price. 
You may want to ask the managers of the restaurant to give recommendations. Their enthusiasm and authentic warmth are not to be missed!
I am truly impressed and this is definitely my kind of social space. Will definitely visit again!!!
