I must admit that even though I live in Happy Valley, I rarely eat in Happy Valley. But there are times I do eat here and sometimes pleasantly surprised and wonder why I haven't come here earlier. This is one of those times.I was at the post office and realized I still haven't had lunch before heading to work. I just decided to eat somewhere near by and came across Sushi Sumi. This place has been here for as long as I've lived here and not once have I been inside for a meal. I decided .... well,

I was at the post office and realized I still haven't had lunch before heading to work. I just decided to eat somewhere near by and came across Sushi Sumi. This place has been here for as long as I've lived here and not once have I been inside for a meal. I decided .... well, it's been here for so long, I guess I should give it a try?
The restaurant was quite large and spacious with a clean wooden layout. There was a sushi bar on one end and that is where I sat.
Lunch had the following menu that was in English and Chinese. Sets included a steamed egg, salad, miso soup, coffee, tea or ice cream. As I was too lazy to decide, I wanted the 12 piece sushi set that was entirely chosen by the chef ($320).
I was immediately presented with a salad. It was ok. Nothing extremely exciting about it. Greens were fresh and there was a small amount of vinaigrette dressing.
The steamed egg was smooth and there seemed to be a layer of broth on top to give it extra sweetness.
After a bit of waiting, the sushi chef apologized for the wait and then began to start my meal. I was a bit surprised at this point. I expected just a platter of 12 pieces of sushi placed in front of me. But what I got was each piece created one by one and placed in front of me with a description and a bit of entertaining chit chat. In true omakase style.
The twelve pieces of sushi were different. Some pieces I have never had before in majority of lunch time sushi restaurants that were in the same price range. Each piece was fresh. Some were flamed. Each served in a different style to showcase the best of that fish. Some items melted in my mouth. All were of high quality and for $320, a pretty good price.
The last piece was a mound of urchin and salmon roe on rice. Fantastic.
I had a miso soup afterwards that was ok. And then I had an ice cream. There was several choices to choose from but Yakult flavor caught my interest and I chose that. Wonderful flavor of the Yakult that was not too sweet but just a perfect ending to my lunch.
This is probably one of the best sushi lunches I've had in a long time. The quality and selection was not only superb but different. The service was wonderful. This is definitely a pleasant surprise and I wonder ... why didn't I come here earlier? It's rare I recommend someone to take the tram into Happy Valley to eat here but this is one of those times. This place is definitely worth trip in from the more popular Causeway Bay.
