Every year, thousands flock the small island of Cheung Chau. Why? Because the little island celebrates the famous Cheung Chau Bun Festival. Started as a way to protect themselves from pirates, this origin is now long forgotten. The buns are a symbol of peace. Numerous bakeries produce these and thousands are sold on that day. As the official supplier has huge queues, I decided to just get one at a random bakery.
The big bun is filled with a sweet red bean paste and steamed. I wasn't too keen on this one. The bun was super dry. Perhaps I was supposed to take it home and reheat it? There wasn't a lot of filling as well. It was mostly bun. It was at at this point I started to wonder if that is why there is such a huge line at the official bun tower supplier? Did that place taste better? I was too lazy to find out.
