Every year, thousands flock the small island of Cheung Chau. Why? Because the little island celebrates the famous   Cheung Chau  Bun Festival. Started  as a way to protect themselves from pirates, this origin is now long forgotten. Every year, thousands flock the small island of Cheung Chau. Why? Because the little island celebrates the famous   Cheung Chau  Bun Festival. Started  as a way to protect themselves from pirates, this origin is now long forgotten. In it's place is a parade of children floating on top of sticks, Chinese lion dances and the famous bun snatching event on top of a huge tower of buns.


The buns are a symbol of peace. Numerous bakeries produce these and thousands are sold on that day. As the official supplier has  huge queues, I decided to just get one at a random bakery.


The  big bun is filled with a sweet red bean paste and steamed. I wasn't too keen on this one.  The bun was super dry. Perhaps I was supposed to take it home and reheat it? There wasn't a lot of filling as well. It was mostly bun. It was at at this point I started to wonder if that is why there is such a huge line at the official bun tower supplier?  Did that place taste better? I was too lazy to find out.
