fun and funky Japanese fusion
沖繩二段料理 (荷里活廣場)
2015-10-28
While walking through Hollywood Plaza, I noticed Antoshimo because of their fun decorations and photography booth. I didn't use it but it appears that you can take selfies. The menu is vibrantly colored with interesting Japanese fusions foods but while the images are very enticing, the menu itself is difficult to read in English and even my Chinese friend said that the Chinese was also hard to follow due to the layout. Despite this, I was able to point at foods that looked tasty and order what I wanted. My friend ordered the chicken wings with rice. Though flavorful, the portion was a bit small and he liked it but it wasn't any better than other chicken wing dishes, although the rice was good.I ordered the cod roe pasta and it was fantastic! Unlike a lot of Asian fusion pasta, this was not cooked to mush but the pasta still had some chewiness to it. The cod roe and flying fish roe combined to add really nice textures and flavors to the dish. I was very happy that I ordered this dish.In fact, my friend became jealous so he ordered the same dish but with fried fish. He also agreed that it was very good. The fish was very tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. He will definitely order this again. We ordered two mochi rolls for dessert in sesame and sweet potato. The filling is surrounded by chewy, gooey mochi and then fried for a very crispy exterior. Both were sooo good but I slightly preferred the sweet potato mochi because the flavor was lighter and filling was gooey. Overall, lunch was delicious.…查看更多

Gather enough people two enjoy both lamb dishes!

I visited this restaurant several times before with my boyfriend and always enjoyed the food, in particular the sesame chicken with cucumbers and thin, chewy flat noodles. Our dining experience was always dampened though by seeing the tables around us enjoying two enormous dishes of lamb that were too much for us to order. Finally, I had the opportunity to book a table with ten friends and I was very excited to order the lamb dishes. One was a roasted lamb wrapped in ltus leaf and roasted until it was tender and falling off the bone (捆草牛骨). It was dipped in a chili, soy and vinegar sauce. the lamb was succulent and juicy. The second lamb dish, also roasted (or fried?) with the bone intact, was covered in a mound of garlic and spices. It reminded me of various dry fried dishes. The pieces were extremely crispy on the outside and meltingly tender on the inside. It may have been even more delicious than the first dish but I couldn't decide for sure even after sampling the two dishes over and over. Our meal included two vegetable dishes, sweet and sour prawns, xiao long bao, sesame chicken noodles, mushroom noodles, 'grease' noodles, fried rice, beef shank, and two desserts. The average cost came out to $146 per head. Almost everything on the menu is delicious but I highly recommend inviting a group of friends to dine with you so that you can eat the feast sized lamb bone platters. …查看更多

Good food, decent prices
La Crêperie (鉅芝樓)
2013-12-29
After reading about problems involving bookings, I made a reservation for an early dinner on Thursday night with my two companions. When we arrived the restaurant was empty. The manager greeted us and showed us to our table, which was in a dark corner. We asked to be moved since there was no one else in the restaurant. He then took our drink orders: two Breton apple ciders, one calvados and I asked for water. It took about five minutes to deliver the drinks, which surprised me since no one else was in the restaurant and there were three waitstaff. They forgot the water. I asked again for water and my other dining companion also asked for some. The waiter returned to the table with one water and one calvados.  Oh dear. He then took away the calvados and returned with one more water. It would have been nice if all three of us received water when I asked for myself but that isn't the practice at the restaurant. We ordered one 'Brittany roll' of beef and spinach and three savory crepes: the super complete for cheese lovers, the la guemene made of intestines, and the la poulane or something that sounds like it, made from ham and raclette cheese. The roll was nice, but tasted like a small kabob. I wouldn't order it again. Next, the waiter delivered the ham and cheese crepe and walked away. At this point a man who we assumed was the owner arrived. He stood by the bar and seemed to be watching the restaurant, as was the manager who was standing next to him. The restaurant was about half full by then. Despite seeming to watch over the restaurant, neither the manager nor the woner noticed that only one dinner had been delivered and two of us were still waiting our meals. We finally flagged down another waiter when the table next to us got their meals and we were still waiting. Our remaining two crepes were quickly made. Two of the crepes were tasty but the one of intestines was horrible. I like intestines but these smelled awful and had very little flavor except salt. The other two were both well balanced and delicious. The super complete had an egg on top that really went nicely with the melted cheese. For dessert, we ordered one les Bermudes chocolate crepe with vanilla ice cream and two salted caramel crepes. One salted caramel crepe had a banana (the la Defi) and one had almonds (la Hong Kong-Vietnam). The dessert crepes were outstanding!  We ate every last bite despite being full! The salted caramel flavors were perfect in my opinion, with the slight saltiness balancing out the creamy sweetness of the caramel.Interestingly, while the staff were pretty bad at getting the orders right, they were really good about removing dishes the second that we plut our forks down. I wonder if there is a need to wash and reuse dishes?  Also, they may have been blundering but they were friendly. I have read reviews about how awful the staff is but we didn't find it to be the case. They just needed better training (hint, hint, owner).…查看更多

Taiwan style dumplings and soup
八方雲集鍋貼水餃專門店
2013-06-19
Sometimes all you want is a bowl of noodles and maybe a small side dish.  This shop provides several tasty choices of both.  On this outing I ordered a bowl of thin rice noodles.  The soup packs a punch in a small bowl.  The soup is very thick and extremely flavorful with rich pork intestines, sliced Taiwanese pork balls and a few chopped green onions on top.  Even though the portion wasn't large, it was very filling. My friend ordered the Taiwanese beef soup and it came in an immense bowl.  The soup stock had distinct flavors from the large chunks of carrot and winter melon.  The portions of meat were almost too much and the two of us barely managed to finish off the stew beef, beef shank meat and tendon pieces but they tasted so good so we ate everything. To cool down, we had a few glasses of soy milk.  It's not better or worse than most places. We ordered kimchi dumplings before realizing how bit the beef soup was so large.  I don't remember much about them and we weren't able to finish them but I remember that they were perfectly pan fried.…查看更多

There are few things more satisfying than finishing a busy day with a sweet reward.  While this shop is small and humble looking, it is also clean and very efficient.  The staff are very friendly and take your order by memory rather than writing anything down.  They don't speak English but all the menus are in English as well as Chinese so please don't let the lack of spoken language deter you or you will miss out on tasting some wonderful local desserts. The two of us ordered a dessert each.  We could have shared a dessert because they are quite filling, especially after eating dinner, but we were greedy and didn't want to share.  $16: The Tang Yuan – Black Sesame Glutinous Rice Ball (黑芝麻湯圓) was perfect.  It was a chewy and soft exterior with a warm and sweet sesame center.  The lightly sweetened ginger soup provided a nice bablance to the heaviness of the sesame and glutinous ball. :)$17: The Double Boiled Milk Custard with Ginger (姜汁炖奶) was very, very rich and filling!  I loved it and wanted to eat all of it but it was too much for me. I have had this at other shops and this is one of the richest versions.  It may be too heavy for some tastes but I like my desserts to be of substance.  You can also get this cold but the shop lady recommended that I have it warm.Overall, it was a very satisfying and inexpensive visit which made my whole day seem happy.  I will definitely be revisiting this shop often.…查看更多

Casual dining with ocean and promenade view
Paisano's Pizzeria
2013-05-30
The Paisano's branch in Stanley is conveniently located at the roundabout of Stanley Market Road and Stanley Main Street. The restaurant space is very large with a couple of outdoor seating tables. One side of the restaurant has views of the promenade and waterfront, which is very nice especially because I was dining alone and had a relaxing view. The pizzas are known for being very large and at $25-$45 per slice is an affordable option for dinner or fast food. It only takes a few minutes to heat the pizza. There are also salads and pasta dishes if you were to eat a more traditional dinner.I was grabbing a quick bite to eat at the end of the day though I noticed that the opening hours were until 11pm, which is later than most kitchens are open. I ordered a slice of Godfather and sat inside by the window to enjoy the pizza and the view. The slice was large as expected with the typical New York style crust. Roma style pizzas have a thick, bready crust while Napoli style is thin, crispy, and slightly charred. The New York is in the middle with chewy crust that isn't very thick. American pizzas tend to load a lot more ingredients onto the pizza than traditional Italian pizzas and the Paisano's New York crust is perfect for holding it all. I ordered the Paisano's slice, which had sausage, pepperoni, black olives, mushrooms and onions. It was warm, chewy and filling. There are a few less traditional flavor options available such as a Bacon Cheeseburger pizza or you can design your own slice. I will definitely be back for more!…查看更多

ranges of spicy
翡翠拉麵小籠包
2013-05-20
Crystal Jade is very popular and there is always a queue for dinner. We had six groups in front of us when we arrived and waited for ten minutes, though we were provided with a menu order form so we could be served as soon as possible when we were seated. The decorations are nice with themed paintings, light fixtures and modern furniture. The space between tables is a close but there is enough room on the tables for all of your dishes. The staff very busy and you have to flag them down for ordering more food or the bill. On the other hand, our tea glasses were filled regularly. He loves spicy food and ordered the chili oil la mian with beef shank, which was really, really hot. Our friend from Taiwan thought it was overwhelmingly hot but my boyfriend enjoyed the large amount of chili. While eating he began to sweat profusely which alarmed the restaurant manager who arrived with lots of tissue and another glass of tea. My boyfriend wasn't nearly as bothered by his red face and sweat and he continued to eat all of the soup. Maybe I would not recommend this restaurant for a romantic dinner if your date reacts strongly to chili. Our friend preferred the dan dan mian with its sweet, savory and hot combination. It wasn't nearly as spicy as the chili oil la mian so he said it was perfect. Each bite had plenty of sauce and flavor. The only thing we didn't enjoy was that someone had cut up the la mian for us. I wish that they would have asked us first because we enjoy the noodles as they are made, which is very, very long strands. You can watch the kitchen staff making the la mian through a glass window waiting for your order. We also ordered the xiao long bao and it did not disappoint. The quality is consistent every time and the dumplings are always hot and juicy with a very thin skin. The dumplings are quite delicate and you must be gentle when picking them up but the reward is a delicious, gelatinous pork broth and nicely seasoned meat. …查看更多

Overcooked eggs
Brown Restaurant and Bar
2013-05-20
Brown is a very nicely decorated restaurant with the interior done in neutral brown tones. The seating is in chairs, plush benches and an outdoor patio in the back. The lighting is low to give a relaxed atmosphere. We reserved for brunch but when we arrived on Sunday morning the restaurant had plenty of available seating so you might not need a reservation unless you have a seating preference. We were at first seated at the nice bench but we asked to be relocated outside. There is plenty of seating out back with nice potted plants. The wait staff is very friendly at first but after they take your order you have to find them for anything else. Unfortunately the food experience wasn't as nice as the environment. I ordered eggs benedict and it came out with the eggs fully cooked and hard. I sent it back and the dish returned with eggs that were only slightly less cooked and the insides were semi solid when I cut into them. Meanwhile the rest of the benedict was cold while the eggs were slightly warm. …查看更多

Delicious roast goose congee
皇府
2013-05-20
King's Palace is a medium sized restaurant with booths on the ground floor and larger seating upstairs. Overall the decor isn't remarkable but is comfortable.Service varies, depending on who waits on your table. One of the servers was very friendly and recommended dishes to us. She suggested the noodle dishes, fish congee, as well as the chef's recommendations section of the menu. Another server acted like she is being inconvenienced when we asked her for more tea even though the restaurant wasn't busy at all.Of my order, I recommend the congee with roast goose. The roasted goose in the dish was plentiful and imparted a delicious, strong flavor that went well with the mild congee and ginger. The goose's natural fattiness melted into the congee so that the whole bowl had the roasted goose flavor. The ginger balanced the heaviness of the goose very nicely.…查看更多

impressive burgers
The Jockey Bar & Club House
2013-05-20
The Jockey looks like a very British pub with framed pictures of race horses on the wall and televisions that play sports such as soccer, rugby, tennis or racing. There is a section of outdoor seating in front. Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating, which can be good or bad depending on your fondness for dogs. I had only planned to have drinks there until the server brought out a tray with ten mini burgers for us. Apparently on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, you get free mini burgers with the purchase of two beverages. They were delicious- very juicy and thick. The menu has typical pub food such as fish & chips, pies, and pasta as well as many selections of burgers such as BBQ sauce, swiss and avocado, bacon and blue cheese, or a monthly feature. I ordered the monthly burger feature ($138), which was a French inspired burger with gruyere cheese and caramelized onions. It arrived with fries, lettuce and tomato on the side, and was perfectly cooked to medium rare. It was so big that I could only eat half of it and the server boxed the rest of it for me to take home. The wait staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is charmingly cozy though it could get a bit noisy because the pub isn't very large. My only criticism is that all of the front seating area is allowed for smoking so if you are bothered by smoke you will have to sit inside.…查看更多

disappointing bún bò Huế
西貢越南湯河
2013-05-20
The shop was quite small and a bit dirty looking with laminated furniture and slightly discolored walls but the woman at the entrance was very welcoming. The menu has been reduced so you will not find bò kho on the menu. I asked the server to make sure because the menu does not have the Vietnamese names but only English and Chinese. I ordered a common cold noodle dish with a type of Vietnamese luncheon meat but ended up with a hot bowl of phở with luncheon meat. My boyfriend got a bowl of bún bò Huế and asked for a side of plain bánh mì (just bread, not a sandwich). The server brought him a warmed over half-baguette of French bread instead of real bánh mì that is made using a bit of rice flour to make it crispier. It was disappointing and we were charged $42, as though we ordered a whole sandwich with filling.:(The phở that I had was okay, though I thought is was watered down a bit but my boyfriend's bún bò Huế was very bad. It tasted like my phở broth but with chili mixed in! There was no lemongrass flavor Overall, we were unhappy with our meal. We were upset at the quality of the food and the full sandwich charge for half a baguette without filling.…查看更多

Hearty yum cha
勝興茶室
2013-05-20
My friend and I came here after finishing a hike and we were very hungry. The restaurant is located along a main pedestrian walking area for the village, between shops that sell various dried seafood. It is a simple restaurant with plain, clean tables and stools to sit on. We arrived around noon, when the restaurant opened, which was fortunate because 30 minutes later a large amount of local residents were queued up for seating. It is casual dining so you will most likely share tables. The dim sum is brought out in large bamboo baskets and the wait staff will come by your table for you to select what you want. This made me very happy because I am not very literate and so I was able to look at all of the offerings before choosing whatever looked delicious to me.The food can only be described as 'robust.' It was super sized! The siu mai were enormous and it took me several bites to consume it. It was very generous with the roe on top, also. After only a few dishes, we were too stuffed to eat any more due to the very big portions. I tried a new dish that was a rice sheet around meat and a quail egg. Very tasty. We also tried a stuffed tofu skin roll that was so big that it draped off the side of my bowl.I can understand why all of the residents wait in line to eat there because you get a lot of food for your money and it is very tasty even if it isn't exactly delicate. For two hungry, tired hikers the meal was perfect.…查看更多

Bakery and brunch in a quiet location
Maison Eric Kayser (雲地利道)
2013-05-15
Maison Eric Kayser is a cheerful shop with a bakery in the front and dining area in the back. The bakery is very attractive, with the fresh baked products in well lit displays. There are several desserts such as three flavors of eclairs, tarts and other cream filled goods behind a refrigerated display as well. While I was purchasing my breads, I saw a brunch menu that featured simple offerings such as a pastry with coffee/tea/orange juice to full brunch on the weekends. There is outdoor seating as well as indoor seating for customers who dine in.I bought a large baguette, fig bread, chocolate croissant and large brioche. there wasn't anythig remarkable about the crust of the baguette but the inside was really nice: slightly chewy and soft. The croissant had good quality chocolate. The fig bread and the brioche were, in my opinion, outstanding. The fig bread had plenty of pieces of fig and was dense and not overly sweet because the figs provided a delicious sweetness when you bit into them. The brioche, aside from being enormous, was very buttery and light with a bit of sweetness. The top of the brioche had a light dusting of crunchy sugar crystals that were a nice addition although the brioche really didn't need it because it was perfect on its own.…查看更多

Exotic drinks and outdoor seating
Havana Bar
2013-05-13
Even though it is a new establishment, Havana is already very popular. I arrived with my boyfriend at around 10pm, which is reasonably early by Lan Kwai Fong nightlife standards, and we got the last outdoor seating. The location is strangely shaped, with the interior space small and wrapping around a corner. It isn't very attractive but the outdoor seating is much better. I wish I could have taken pictures of the outdoor seating but the intimate light levels were too low so I will try my best to describe the experience for you.The outdoor area is large and rectangular, and entirely covered by a nice awning. One side has planters and very comfortable outdoor chairs and small tables while the other side has an enormous cushioned bench with pillows as well as tables with stools. At the far building wall there is a mural that looks like a cigar box and a group seating area. There are hidden lights among the planters as well as LED lighted candles on each table. It is a very beautiful setup.Because of certain alcohol restrictions, the staff cannot serve alcohol outside although they will come out to pick up your empty glasses as well as deliver food. You have to go to the bar and give your order. The first time I had to wait at the bar for quite a while because the menu features a lot of exotic drinks that take a while to make. We ordered a classic mojito and a caipirinha so the mint and lime had to be muddled. Later we realized that it was easier to order our drinks when we were finishing the previous drinks and then return to pick them up and pay for them. My mojito was lovely and it had a nice slice of sugar cane to use as a stirrer, which I thought was a nice finish. My boyfriend's caipirinha was also very good and strong so that he didn't want another drink. I also tried the berry mojito and it had a nice fruit and citrus taste though I preferred the classic mojito. The simple mint and lime is very refreshing. The drink was muddled very well so that I didn't have to do any mixing on my own. The menu is extensive with a huge variety of exotic drinks. Havana features mojitos and daquiris but there are many cocktails to choose from, especially rum cocktails.…查看更多

Unique flavors to typical dim sum
百樂門宴會廳
2013-05-13
As our taxi driver was taking us to Megabox, he told us that he eats here every weekend so we decided that we should have some dim sum (yum cha) before a long day of shopping. There are two floors of banquet restaurants on the 13th and 14 floor and Paramount had a biggest queue. They provide seats to wait and there were a dozen people in front of us but we were seated quickly. The restaurant is somewhat typical with wedding style decor in red and white, and cloth tablecloths with lotus patterned plates. We appreciated that the server asked us for our tea preference instead of seeing that we were westerners and giving us jasmine tea. We enjoy po lei. There is a small dish of pickles to start off the meal but be advised that they will bill you for it and the price was $19 so it was annoying. This is typical of more and more restaurants and perhaps we could have refused the dish. Two of us ordered six medium and small sized dishes and it was plenty. The bill was $240 (including dish of pickles) which was average priced. The first dish that came out was the pork cheung fan. It was good but not different from other restaurants. We had noticed a lot of plates with deep fried glutinous dumplings and minced beef being run out from the kitchen so we ordered it also. We thought it was okay. The dumplings were a bit cool and soggy like they had not recently been cooked. Strange because they were a very popular item. The filling was good, though.Next we had the char siu bolaubao (pineapple buns with roast pork filling). These have become very popular recently and paramount listed them as a specialty. They were different from others that we have eaten because they had a very distinct coconut flavor. My boyfriend doesn't really favor coconut so he thought it was okay but I loved it. :)My boyfriend became very happy with the pai gwat. There was a lot of garlic in the dish, more than what we would get at other restaurants. We both really liked the difference in Paramount's garlic portions for the pai gwat. The Chiu Chow dumplings arrived straight from the steamer. The glutinous wrapping was so sticky that it got attached to our chopsticks and the dumplings fell apart. I don't think that it was supposed to be like this but we had fun trying to eat it. Even though the dumplings turned into sticky messes, the flavors of the meat, shrimp, peanuts, etc was delicious. The beef balls were also very good. They didn't have any unusual flavors from other beef balls we have had but they were tasty.Overall, it was a wonderful dim sum and we will definitely be back for more.…查看更多
