We were first given two little dishes of appetisers consisting of sweetened pickles and chilli bean sprouts. Both were served cold which was fitting, given the sweltering heat outside.
As well as the standard menu, Nishiki also has some set lunches available which come with rice, miso soup and coffee.

First up was the Fried bean curd noodle with soup, which consisted of udon noodles served in a clear broth together with chopped chives, seaweed and fried bean curd skin. The udon noodles had a chewy texture and fared well with the soup as well as with the softness of the seaweed and bean curd. All in all it was a very light, delicate tasting dish and a nice start to our lunch.

Next up was the grilled fish set. In this case, we chose smelt. The smelt fish was grilled to perfection and you could taste the lovely natural taste of the fish, alongside with the fatty oils excreted as a result of the way the fish was cooked. Combined with the juice of a lemon, the fish exerted flavours reminiscent of the seaside.

Next came the Nishiki Don, consisting of a various assortment of skewers (chicken, mushroom and pepper) placed on top of steamed rice seasoned with sweet soy sauce. The skewers complemented the rice wonderfully. It was nice that the chicken skewers were all prepared differently, allowing us to taste different parts of the chicken as well as their respective textures and flavours.

I also ordered a Chicken skin garlic roll skewer. The roasted garlic had a sweet, buttery and rich taste, and was soft when bitten into. This matched perfectly with the crisp chicken skin which was wrapped around each individual piece of garlic.

The Chicken Gristle skewers also tasted delicious with a good balance of gristle to fat.

These grilled bacon wrapped oysters were succulent and sweet. The grilled bacon added an extra dimension to the oysters by adding a smoky, salty and meaty roughness touch to the dish.

For the final dish of the day, the Deep fried chicken & cheese spring rolls sparked my interest upon reading the menu, and I wasn’t disappointed. Each piece of spring roll contained diced chicken meat and gristle, wrapped in a shisho leaf and deep fried. As you bit into the spring roll cheese would come oozing out of the meat and combine with the natural juices of the chicken. I would definitely recommend this dish!
Nishiki is a restaurant I see myself coming to over and over again. With good prices, authentic cuisine and a homely, warm atmosphere, I’d encourage everyone to try it as well!
