This very modest-looking eatery doesn't have an English name that I know of, and is tucked away on a pedestrian side street that doesn't see a lot of outside visitors. At first I thought it was a deli counter that only did takeaway orders, because there were always so many customers getting Styrofoam containers filled to go. Not until almost a year later did I realize that there was indoor seating.

Essentially, the way this place works is that you go up to the counter and choose which dishes you want, and the server will slop a ladleful of each on a plastic plate with rice while you find yourself a table. She will then bring your plate with a small bowl of meat and vegetable soup. Drinks like ice coffee and lemon tea cost extra, and pricing varies according to whether you're eating one, two, three or four different dishes. Even the massive "Four Treasures" plate is less than $40, and the vast majority of Hongkongers will likely spend under $30 for a very filling meal. The secret is in the rice--after asking for "less rice," I estimate that the amount I received was still equal to a bowl and a half's worth. A regular portion looked like the equivalent of two bowls, and some folks were getting more than that. No wonder the place is always packed with working-class people at the end of their shift, kicking back and watching TV as they pack it all away.

The menu is typically the same from day to day, and includes favorites like bitter melon with spareribs, Hong Kong-style chicken curry, and stir-fried egg and tomato. I've eaten a number of them and so far have only found the daikon radish to be lacking in flavor. This time, I had zucchini with mixed vegetables and fatty pork with bean curd. As always, it tasted like a home-cooked meal from Grandma's kitchen. Well, if my grandmother were Chinese. You know what I mean.
