My boyfriend & I came to La Vache! last Sunday night eager for some comfort food after a long day of hiking. We wanted to treat ourselves to something relaxing & a bit indulgent after trekking all day -- well, we sure chose the right place! Everything about La Vache! is charming; the red-checked tablecloths, the cocktail lists, the nice hostess at the door, the toilet tissue (!!!)...their attention to detail is impressive, I must say! Everything about La Vache! is charming; the red-checked tablecloths, the cocktail lists, the nice hostess at the door, the toilet tissue (!!!)...their attention to detail is impressive, I must say! We walked in to the bustling restaurant around 7pm and were seated just a few moments later at a lovely corner table.
Exhausted, it felt like a treat to not have to peruse a menu or make any decisions. We just ordered a bottle of the house La Vache! wine and I asked for a medium rare steak & my boyfriend ask for well done. Easy!
Our bottle of wine arrived with fresh French bread and butter (which was served in an adorable dish with La Vache! branded paper on top - love!). We were then served a generously sized green salad with walnuts and a zesty vinaigrette. I love how the French can make such a simple salad taste so complex and delicious.
After inhaling our salads, we were ready for the main attraction: STEAK. As mentioned, I ordered medium-rare & my boyfriend ordered well done. Our opposing steak preferences is a major point of contention for us: I cannot stand well-done meat & he doesn't like anything "bloody." When ordering steak, I'm often concerned that our orders will be confused, but both of ours came out perfectly. I guess when you only cook one thing, you learn how to master it!
Accompanying our steak was a delightful special "La Vache!" sauce along with heaping (& endless) portion of hot "frites." Our waiter kept coming back to serve us more -- fresh from the kitchen. My waistline wanted to say no, but my aching calves told me that it was okay. Hehe
After nearly polishing off both steaks + a bottle of wine, & lord know how many fries (oops), we surely thought that we did not want dessert. That was until this ridiculous cart rolled over to our table filled with delightful Parisian treats. I mean, how could we say no?
Our post-hike meal was turning into a full on date night. We decided to keep the momentum going & ordered two cocktails and a slice of chocolate cake. On the recommendation of our waiter, I ordered the Tarte Tatin & my boyfriend ordered the Boulevardier. I could have had the tarte tatin for dessert on it's own -- so sweet, apple-y & delicious. SO good. I was also pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the Boulevardier (like a negroni but with bourbon), as I normally try to avoid anything in the bourbon/whiskey family. It was really well balanced and smooth.
The chocolate cake was pure decadence & topped with fresh cream & berries. The perfect end to a perfect Hong Kong day. I can't wait to come back to La Vache!
