Truly looked forward to dining at Green Commons. Many local Asian style vegetarian restaurants often lean towards excessively fried, or excessively oily. In this regard, Green Commons chefs exert a light hand. Because I love Green Commons environmental premise so much, I feel impelled to write about my experience there, as I almost never bother writing on Open rice.

We ordered the Hainanese Chicken rice and the Tom Yam Kung Noodle Soup, with a miso quinoa soup and a Thai sweet potato soup.
The Hainanese Chicken rice wins points for its flavorful treatment of the rice, but loses points for a relatively dry offering. The traditional Hainanese chicken rice is savored for its richness (because of the chicken fat), and the vegetarian version does not have the benefit of this convenience. The rice would have benefited a lot more if it could have been softer and cooked in a richer more flavorful broth base. The mock chicken and mushrooms that accompanied the rice and the accompanying sauces were well-tuned and balanced. It's easy to understand why one could repeat an order of this dish, even as the rice could be much improved.
The Tom Yam Kung Noodle Soup though, was so lacking in the characteristic spice of my beloved original, that I wasn't quite sure what made it a Tom Yam Kung soup. I would have happily forgone the mock pork jowl that accompanied the dish, if they could have just added in the fair share of coconut milk, galangal, chili, lemon grass, tamarind and kaffir lime leaves that actually makes water Tom Yam Kung. Unfortunately, apart from lime and salt, we could pick up very few other flavours in this rather bland soup.
The Tom Yam Kung was so mellow, that the rich flavours of the Thai Sweet Potato Soup came as rather surprising as the fragrant coconut and sweet potato were truly bright. On the other hand, we would have gladly made a pass for the miso quinoa soup...as the miso was, well...really passable, as well as everything else in the soup.
Given the prime location of this cafe, it's understandable that most of what one is paying is going towards rent. This makes price of the relatively humble food on offer reasonable. The clean and fresh decor and food presentation reminds one of Muji Cafe, which offers no surprises, but is as pleasant as the food and ideas which it has to offer. I really hope that the average food continues to improve in quality, as the quality of vegetarian food in HK continues to bloom...very very slowly.
