Kyo Hayashiya hails from Japan, land of everything matcha. They have locations throughout Japan and recently have branched out to Hong Kong inside Hysan Place, Causeway Bay. It is similar to Nakamura Tokichi, the other matcha house from Japan that has opened in Hong Kong as well.

As I was in a serious need for a dessert break after work, I decided to come here for a parfait. There was no line when I was there so I got a seat very quickly.

Menu is in English and Chinese. They serve various Japanese style matcha desserts such as parfaits, warabi and roll cakes along with tea and matcha based soba. They have sets where tea is included. Only water is provided. They do not serve you tea unlike Nakamura Tokichi. But then Nakamura Tokichi also charges a tea charge.

Matcha Parfait ($88). I ordered this. They also have a Hong Kong limited edition but I wasn't too interested in that. The parfait included both soft serve and scoop of ice cream. There were dango and warabit mochi. There was also whipped cream. The matcha tasted quite good with a strong bitter taste. It wasn't sweet. Dango and warabi were soft and chewy. However, there was a glaring hole in the center of the soft serve. Thus, the entire thing was not filled with ice cream and only the rim. That was a bit disappointing because Nakamura Tokichi's parfait, the whole thing was filled and there were no gaping holes to be found.

Service was also a bit disapointing.. Where Nakamura Tokichi made you feel like you stepped into a Japanese tea house, I didn't get this feeling here. My parfait was served with one hand, so the glass slid to one side. I also heard the staff constantly gossiping away and it tok me a while to get their attention.

The parfait is ok. But if I had to choose between here and Nakamura Tokichi, I think I would return to Nakamura Tokichi again in terms of quality and service.
