山旮旯/San Ka La (English: meaning far off into the mountains) is a new bar/cafe found in Causeway Bay. I saw one day while I was taking the tram to Causeway Bay and wondered what it was. A brown wooden boarded up shop next to the hotel.I had completely forgotten about it until I read in a magazine that featured new cafe openings and it was mentioned. It was pretty spacious with a very cool retro type design.
Lunch menu offered a daily soup, main and drink. Price averaged under $200. Menu was in English and Chinese. They also offer various all day breakfasts and a la carte. I decided to stick to the lunch set.
Daily Soup. The daily soup was cream of carrot. This was actually decent enough. It was sweet and had a rather nice carrot taste.
Pan fried salmon fillet and cheese portobello with creamy butter dill sauce ($138). This is where things started to get disappointing. It looked pretty, placed on wooden board, sea salt thrown all over. But the salmon was a complete fail. The skin was not crispy but chewy. It didn't crack. The fish itself was bland. Yes, it was cooked alright but where was the seasoning? They threw all the seasoning around the fish except on the fish itself. The butter dill sauce was ok and pretty much saved the fish. You really need it to add any sort of flavor to this poor thing. Meanwhile, I guess the roasted tomato got majority of the seasoning as it was super salty. The salad was ok and evenly dressed. The mushrom was fine as well. It was just the star of the show was a grave disappointment.
Latte. Chose this as my set drink. Arriving in a cup with the restaurant logo on it, it was cute. The latte art was pretty. But the latte was not that good. It had a rough after taste. The ratio of milk to coffee was imbalanced. It didn't go down well.
A nicely designed restaurant with a lot of tongue in cheek. Too bad the food didn't fare as well. For this price, I could get a much more decent meal in Causeway Bay. Mediocre at best and definitely not worth a trip to find it. The staff was friendly, I'll give them that. They even say if you keep your receipt, you can get a 20% discount if you return within 14 days. Too bad, I will not be back.
