Steak-frites. The national dish of France, you really can't go one day in France without having this. What you get a steak (usually, a rib eye) and mounds upon mounds of fries. Not thick cut fries. La Vache brought this lovely French dish to Hong Kong a few years ago with only one thing on their menu: steak and fries for a set price of $288. It also includes a walnut salad. But that is it. Don't ask for a la carte. There isn't any. The only thing they will ask you is how you want to have your steak cooked and if you want any wine. Located in Central, the door is actually rather small and the restaurant is actually located in the basement.
As it was boyfriend's birthday, we went there to celebrate. We chose lunch as we heard that during lunch session, the set and price is exactly the same but they will add a complimentary daily dessert. As there is no reservation policy (unless you have more than 5 people), we rocked ourselves there during lunch hour and there was no queue! The hostess greeted us and brought us to a table and asked if we've been here before. Of course, no! An explanation was given and a question of how we wanted our steak. Medium rare, of course!
The restaurant isn't very big. All tables surround a vast bar in the center.
The menu, in French and English, is actually the place mat.
I love how the placement and everything had whimsical drawings. It was cute and so so French.
Even the wine bottles were designed that way.
A bread basket was given to us of wonderfully tearable yet fragrant baguettes.
The salad was walnut salad. They used a butter lettuce that I love. However, I think the dressing was a bit too acidic.
After we finished our salad, a metal plate with steak was placed in front of us. A flame was lit underneath. Thus, it's a good idea to order medium rare or at least more on the rare side as the flame will continue to heat the steak throughout your meal, thus continually cooking it. There were two sauces: a bearnaise and ketchup.
And then they pile your plate with fries. Lots and lots of fries. They will keep piling until you say stop or they run out. And if you want more fries, you can get unlimited refills. The fries were perfectly seasoned. Crispy with a wonderful amount of seasoning without being overly salty. These were really excellent fries.
The steak? Juicy and moist. There was a wonderful taste of beef that I can only get from a good steak. This was exactly the kind of steak I love.
As it was lunch session, they offer a complimentary dessert. Today's dessert was a French apple cake! MY FAVORITE! Ok, to be honest, I just love French desserts (and French food in general) but a French apple cake is something I love so much! It was rich with apples and not too sweet. There was a fresh lightly sweetened cream on the side.
After we finished our dessert, the waitress came over. She overheard that I mentioned it was boyfriend's birthday and apologized that they had brought out the wrong dessert! Then she presented another slice of French apple cake with the words Bon Anniversaire (happy birthday in French) in chocolate on the plate! We didn't expect this as I didn't ask the kitchen to do this. What a lovely surprise and small touch to make the lunch extra special. Now, this is what I call service!Excellent food and wonderful service. Probably one the nicest places we've been to without the snobbery. Will be back and recommend to many.
