I must admit Chinese food is never one of my top 5 favourite cuisines. Being brought up in UK, I have always prefer sandwiches, roasties, pizzas (plus everything else that's considered as unhealthy) over steamed spare ribs or stir-fried noodles. I must admit Chinese food is never one of my top 5 favourite cuisines. Being brought up in UK, I have always prefer sandwiches, roasties, pizzas (plus everything else that's considered as unhealthy) over steamed spare ribs or stir-fried noodles. This is probably the reason why I hardly blog about Chinese food as to me it's just... you know, normal stuff you find at home, isn't it?

However I do realise that Chinese, or more specifically the Guangdong folks are generally very good at preserving the natural flavours of ingredients through their cooking methods and presentations. Hearing from friends that Loong Yuen is one of the experts in town, I just couldn't bear not coming to have a taste of how amazing their dishes can be!

To start with, we have ordered a Double Boiled Pig's lung with Pork and Almond ($398) to share. This is one of the must-order soup for me whenever I see it on menus because making it at home is just too much of a trouble. Comparing this to the one from HKU Alumni Association, the sweetness from the meat is way more pronounced than that of the almonds here.

The Pan-Fried Fresh Shrimps ($368) were well-seasoned. However I thought the flavour of the shrimps themselves was slightly hindered by the rich soy sauce.

This Braised Garoupa ($368) was one of my favouite of all. The fish was thickly sliced, perfectly flaky and was packed with intense sweetness. Meanwhile, the huge chunk of crunchy spring onions picked up all the flavours. Simple, yet beautiful.

Braised Ox Tail in Tomato and Red Wine Sauce ($398) was another lovely dish. The meat was really tender and literally fell off the bones. I felt the Chinese Steamed Buns was kind of odd to be served with the ox tail even though they were spongy and tasty on their own. They were pretty dense which made it hard to soak up the sauce. Rice is good enough I think.

The Deep-Fried Crispy Chicken ($398) was really flavourful and juicy. Even the breast pieces were extremely moist and delectable! Its skin was crispy indeed and there was not much fat underneath it.

After having all the meat dishes, some green sprouts ($138) do help minimise the grease. It was a nice clear broth that the sprouts were simmered in, where you could taste the earthiness of the Chinese mushrooms as well.

For dessert, we had this Deep-fried Sesame Balls filled with mushy pineapple ($48) and OMG it was sooooo good! Crunchy, chewy, sweet and refreshing all came in one bite. Can't complain no more ...

We also ordered this freshly made little pot of Beancurd Pudding ($98) to share. The pudding was very smooth but I am telling you the best part was really the ginger syrup that went with it! What a light yet fabulous all-time-fave of mine.

You shouldn't miss the Deep-Fried Chinese Fritter ($58) neither because it's was just so light and flaky and delicate. Really a must-order if you'd like to finish your meal with a sweet note!

Apart from the slight doubt about the shrimps, I have enjoyed the food here and especially the outstanding Chinese desserts! Though I though it was a bit over-priced and I prefer Osteria over Loong Yuen if I have to make a choice between the two. Though I guess it would still be a good, central location for family gatherings and celebrations!
