Before everything, I should like to share something I read about American burgers:
"......the hamburger: a symbol of the reassuring predictability, the pre-packaged straightforwardness, the sheer lack of pretension of American life."
"The rise of the hamburger is a metaphor for the rise of America. It came ashore with immigrants from Hamburg, who had long since acquired the habit of eating ground beef, raw with onion juice, from nomadic Tatar tribes. Like the immigrants themselves, the hamburger evolved in the new world. It was cooked; it was sheathed in bread. Then, sometime around 1920, a bun replaced the sandwich bread. The American century had begun in earnest.
It soon picked up speed. In 1948 Richard and Maurice McDonald opened the first fast-burger joint; the food was prepared in advance and kept warm under infra-red lamps. The prepackaged hamburger—standard, efficient, cheap—fitted the mass culture that emerged after the war. It was as reliable and practical as the blue jean; it lacked any trace of snobbery. "
So, that is American burgers.
And as they so identify themselves, Shake'em Buns is indeed providing very authentic American burgers.
Yes, everything is extra large, soggy, super juicy, almost impossible to hold to eat. It's just so overwhelming like this. And I'm just loving it. Any comparison of Shake'em Buns with burgers of other different styles, while they may be good on their own, just misses the point right here.
I would say all different burgers offered by Shake'em Buns are delicious, but in particular I would recommend GANG BANG and RED ON THE NECK.
GANG BANG is the extreme of the symbol. Everything is in there: crispy bacon, juicy patty (x2), melted cheese, fresh vegetable. And there's even a fried egg. It's so huge that one can hardly hold it in hands. And even if you can hold it, you may not bite it easily. It's a lot of fun eating this burger. And it's total enjoyment in every bite.
I wonder why Shake'em Buns doesn't organise some GANG BANG battle, for people to compete over not only how many GANG BANG they can take or how fast they can finish one but also how clean they can be after that.
If GANG BANG is too much, another burger I would recommend is RED NECK. Don't get me wrong, RED NECK is big, too, but it's kindof something manageable. What makes RED NECK different is the sexy chili sauce. It's something.
Shake'em Buns also offers different types of fries, ie. fries with different toppings. I don't like that. I like plain fries, and it's very nice. Always freshly fried. Above all, not salty at all.
I don't try any smoothies, either. I just like plain coke. So it's left for anyone to explore and enjoy.
On service, the staff are all diligent, very nice and friendly. They treat every customer, whether locals or not, the same.
Finally, the decor of Shake'em Buns is very nice. But perhaps it's too nice like a restaurant that many first-time customers would expect service from a waiter/waitress. They do not realise the "policy" that they have to order and pay at the cashier on the corner and get a pager to wait for the call to get the food. It's quite natural and understandable (whilst I also understand the management may want to make the outlet double as a bar and look a bit higher class for decent dinner). As a result, I did see not few customers pulled a long face and left without ordering anything after sitting down awhile without anyone serving them. Maybe the management could look into this to help this apparent mismatch between the decor and the food-ordering process (at least during lunch).
Anyway, I like the food of Shake'em Buns very much and I will keep coming back unless they fail to upkeep their quality.
Definitely recommended!
