I had to have a late lunch on Wednesday, and I was in 油麻地, so I gave 美都a try on the strength of favorable reviews by OpenRice members.
(1) Dining Room -
美都is a classic, 1960's style 茶餐廳which I still have fond memory in the 1970s. With a high celling ground floor, and an attic with many open windows for enjoying the view at 榕樹頭. Lovely!
(2) Hygiene -
Unlike other eating places at 廟街, 美都is surprisingly clean from top to bottom. I don't see any littering, pests or insects - all common sights of typical 茶餐廳- anywhere while I was there. Two thumbs up!
(3) Service -
The waitresses (mature ladies in their 40s) were polite and quite attentive to customers. Pretty high standard for typical 茶餐廳.
(4) Food Quality -
For lunch, I only had the house specialties - 焗排骨飯and 紅豆冰, so I'll comment on this two:
(a) 焗排骨飯($43):
The whole dish was freshly made and baked, from the egg fried rice to the deep-fied 排骨. The egg fried rice tasted rather bland (no salt was added apparently), and the 'deep-fried 排骨' were in small and boney pieces. The '薯汁' was also the non-aggressive type you often tasted at 茶餐廳or 快餐店. Portion-wise, it was enough for most ladies, but it may leave a hungry guy (like me) wanted more.
What I liked most about this 焗排骨飯the most, however, was its standard of quality: it was not outstanding, but it was certainly not sub-par. That is, 'right on the target'. Think of other resturants which slipped and slided after a year or two, 美都keep their standard over many decades in the form of 焗排骨飯is definitely an achievement.
(b) 紅豆冰($14):
When all other resturants use coconut milk for their 紅豆冰these days, 美都insisted on using the classic 花奶to top the well-tasted 紅豆and self-crushed ice. Contrary to what 超級小黑咪had said, the sweetness of my glass of 紅豆冰was 'just right', suitable to anyone's taste. Despite the price, it's a must-try item for all first timers.
(5) Menu -
I even found some obsolete 1960s / 70s items such as '貓嘜波打酒' on the menu. So this is definitely a place for all you nostalgic fans (me, too) !
(6) Value for Money -
美都is an expensive 茶餐廳, as the price of 焗排骨飯and 紅豆冰clearly shows, but its food quality was well-kept and stable for so many years that your money should be well spent anytime you eat there. So that's the trade-off, 'money for quality'.
------------
CONCLUSION -
美都is like the 'turtle' in the classic '龜兔賽跑' story. It moves slowly and steadily, but it will win your hearts with its consistency and in food quality and good hygiene. Despite its high price, it's well worth trying for first timers, and definitely a favorite spot for the grown-ups who long for that wonderful 1960s nostalgia. ^_^
