I had a wonderful Saturday Brunch at this restaurant today. The brunch is charged at HKD350 and is a pretty good bargain.The bread basket was nice and was served with butter, certain spicy/minty sauce and sea salt.The brunch includes several choices of all-you-can-eat starters: watermelon salad, tuna ceviche, seabass ceviche, braised ribs and corn and beef mini pies. I had a wonderful Saturday Brunch at this restaurant today. The brunch is charged at HKD350 and is a pretty good bargain.

The bread basket was nice and was served with butter, certain spicy/minty sauce and sea salt.

The brunch includes several choices of all-you-can-eat starters: watermelon salad, tuna ceviche, seabass ceviche, braised ribs and corn and beef mini pies. All are on the good side and the briased ribs are particularly tender and juicy. The portions are quite big so we only had to order a few more dishes for the second round.

You can pick one main: I had the chorizo sirloin and my friend had the ancho rib eye. Both are very nicely done. I especially like the sirloin which has the perfect texture.

There are three choices of desserts and various types of fruits served at a buffet counter. All desserts are good.

If you add on HKD100, you will get a free flow non-alcoholic beverages (including mocktails) and if you add on HKD250, you will get free flow of branded champagne. The free flow is for 2 hours.

I got the champage package and HKD250 was in my opinion quite a bargain (I had 5 glasses!!!)

This Saturday brunch is certainly worth a try!

先上餐包,與Chipas相遇實在太美妙,別以貌取包,其芝士鹹香可是由內到外的美味
看似麻糬麵包,質感卻沒有那種煙韌,倒是細實,包心濕潤有致,不怕涸喉
為了緊接而來的正餐,不論它有多誘人,還是少食多滋味(雖然我說似乎不太靠譜)

Pan-seared Scallops暖熱上桌,稍帶金黃焦痕的貝肉仍是飽滿富亮澤
彈牙嫩身且帶微甜,沒有過熟的問題,調味稍濃,但仍在可接受的範圍
椰菜以啤酒燉煮也沒有酒苦,保持清甜,正好減淡煙肉及脆豬腩帶來的鹹味

我們不約而同地選了Medium Rare,中心粉嫩的Beer-basted Sirloin Steak果然最好
肉味濃郁不已,不帶半點腥臊,咀嚼起來不韌柴,調味頗濃,正是阿根廷菜給我的印象
伴有南瓜蓉的溫和甜美,如果像友人一樣不愛過份濃味,或者可嘗試以此中和
炸薯條上澆有Chimichurri香草醬,添上香草香氣及酸意,不消一會便清光了

After long time we return to gaucho, knowing they have a new head chief, hoping food quality would be going to the next level, which they didn't disappoint me.We had try their special starter squid and new starter " watermelon salad", they are incredible and unforgeten taste, definitely MUST TRY items. I've been told good things about this restaurant and I wanted to treat my parents to a nice steak. However, what I got was bad service with a bad attitude by the head waiter who didn't really serve us. The steak was so so.... very dissatisfied They never showed us the steak before they cooked it and they never told us what sauce we can have, WE had to ask him but what's with the attitude....? Going to gaucho I did not expect this kind of service. I was quite upset by this. I'm never coming back

Service was alright. The table next to us asked the server about the difference between ribeye and sirloin. The server then showed him 2 pieces of raw meat and explained to him patiently about the difference between the 2 cuts. The manager also made an effort to go around the tables and asked if the customers enjoyed the good. The server of our table, however, made too much noise when setting the cutlery and removing the empty dishes. He was not unfriendly though. He was just a bit too hasty.

The rump steak, is a muscular part taken from the lower back of the cattle. We ask to serve medium rare which is grilled like an everyday steak. It is a little gamey, rough but very flavorful as compare to other cuts.

It looks like a main dish in terms of proportion and it tastes like sweet pork. The main course is Rib eye steak (180g) cooked in medium. The steak is really worth for its price, because it tastes really juicy and soft. Taking the advantage of the Restaurant Week, I have the chance to step into Gaucho to try the fine dining at a great discount. The restaurant looks comfortable with ambient environment.I ordered a 3-course set lunch. For the starter, I chose Provolone and Onion Enpanada. Taking the advantage of the Restaurant Week, I have the chance to step into Gaucho to try the fine dining at a great discount.
The restaurant looks comfortable with ambient environment.
I ordered a 3-course set lunch. For the starter, I chose Provolone and Onion Enpanada. It was filled with melting cheese, warm and tasty, with sour sauce to stimulate your appetite.

Dulce de Leche Creme Brulee with ginger cookies. Just like its name, this dessert was sweet and soft.
All the dishes were delicios and worth for the price.

Interestingly, Gaucho is a very successful chain of steak restaurants that is predominantly located in the UK, with around a dozen outlets dotted mostly through London.  With a nod to its Argentinian heritage, there is one outlet in Buenos Aries; one of three international Gauchos (the others being Dubai and here in Hong Kong).

If I was dubious about an Argentinian Steak restaurant with a home base in the UK, my mind was put at ease once I read a little bit about where the restaurant group secured its beef.  Gaucho recieves its beef exclusively and is sourced solely from the Pampas; an area of Argentina that's famous for its fertile soil.  The Aberdeen-Angus cattle are therefore reared on luscious grassland, which I'm told can be tasted in the quality of the beef served.

Well, I was about to find out if the claims were warranted!

But before I could get onto the main show, we had to navigate the restaurant's extensive menu; which ran over several pages and took quite some time to study.  While we were doing so, one of the wait staff sauntered over to our table with a board containing the different cuts of beef that would be available to us; leaving no doubt why we were in Gaucho in the first place!

For such a  large starter menu, I found it a little difficult to find options that I really wanted to try; partially because I couldn't get past the chorizo option, and partially for the overly fancy options available!

Anyway, we managed to make our choices.  While we waited, a small bread platter was delivered, along with some of the sauces that we'd need to use with our main courses.  There was a lovely smear of salted butter on our slate of bread, but it was probably not enough for my liking, so I had to be a little bit mean spreading butter on my sour dough.

The girl's order of ceviche of snapper, served in a neat little pile with grapefruit and grilled corn arrived.  The large squares of fresh snapper tasted quite sweet and the addition of jalapeño and wasabi added some contrasting heat.  There were also little chilli flakes in the dish, probably not so necessary given the jalapeño, which at times tipped the balance too far to the heat.  Having said that, there was a lovely little creaminess to the dish that made you want to keep going back for more.

I'd ordered the chorizo sausage that was served with a mix of pickled peppers and red onion.  Mmmm, I'm gonna say that the presentation was less than appealing, in fact, we had a little chuckle at what the squat little sausage looked like on the plate.  I'm a huge fan of Spanish chorizo, less so of the Argentinian variety.  Where there is usually a sweet hit that holds a little heat with the Spanish variety, the Gaucho version was just overly sweet. Without the hit of paprika, it was just a sausage.  I've had great Argentinian chorizo at places like Djapa, so it was just a little disappointing overall.  Equally, I didn't find the pickled papers and onion to add much value, they looked quite limp on the plate!

With a mixed start to the meal, we both hoped that there would be a lift with the steaks.  After all, it was the main reason why we were at Gaucho.

First things first.  I'm going to say that the beef from Gaucho is very, very tasty.  We could certainly tell that the beef had been lovingly sourced and we could taste the fields of Pampas in every tender bite.

However, the presentation of our steaks left a lot to be desired.  A LOT.

I know that steak can be hard to present at times, but Gaucho had sliced the beef into medallions and just haphazardly plonked them on plates; with not even the hint of presentation in mind!  Many steak restaurants will have a little pile of garnish, maybe a vine ripened tomato, something to take away the blandness of steak.

Nope, nada!

I'd chosen the leaner tenderloin and the girl had chosen the slightly fattier rib-eye; both were cooked to perfection and as I mentioned, quite yummy.

Now, I do know that a steak restaurant will present steak simply and you need to order sides; and of course we did.  We'd actually asked for vine ripened tomatoes and the dauphinoise potatoes, the latter being superbly creamy and a wonderful accompaniment to the beef (of course!).  Unfortunately, instead of our vine ripened tomatoes we received an heirloom tomato salad, on it's own not so bad, but definitely not what we'd ordered.

A minor annoyance for what had been attentive, if not a little slow, service on the night.

We should have left it there, but decided that we'd check out the desserts, which admittedly looked pretty good on the menu.

Seduced by the prospect of some sabayon (ask me about this sometime), the girl ordered the poached plums with mascarpone sabayon, orange compote and shortbread crumble.  It was a very ordinary looking dessert that probably missed the mark for the girl, who was looking for something a little sweeter.  The plums were stewed and quite sweet, but she really wanted a big hit of creamy sabayon and it just wasn't there.

I loved the look of my salted dulce de leche and hazelnut cheesecake; a circle of milk chocolate ganache was speared by a marbled chocolate shard and coconut Italian meringue was toasted on the side.  While it looked amazing, the ganache was really quite dry and the meringue a little grainy; overall there was not enough moisture in the dish, which made it heavy and hard to eat.  I did love the tempered marble shard, which was just great quality chocolate.

I've been on a quest lately to find a great little steak restaurant where I can crack on for a simple and delicious piece of beef at a reasonable price.  I'm not so sure I've found it in Gaucho.  Look, don't get me wrong; the main star of the show, the Argentinian beef, was sensational.  It's flavour profile was rich and inviting, very beefy and sweet; a joy to eat.

However, the associated elements of the meal were not up to the same high standard as the beef; the desserts in particular.  It's definitely a place that I'd give a second go to; I really did enjoy their tasty produce.  There's even some more starters that I'd give a try (if I was in the right mood); but I'm not sure I'll be rushing back.

Gaucho seems to be one of those mid-level restaurants in Hong Kong that has potential; but in it's price range, there are quite a few other beef restaurants that are better; Beefbar is one that springs to mind (the Michelin Guide recently rewarded them with a star).

Given it's part of a large and successful chain of restaurants, I'm sure it will stick around and continue be an option for those that want a tasty beef steak.  I do think it needs to up its game with everything else though....

When I arrived I was immediately told by all the waiters (including the girl at the reception) about their brunch deal, anything you can eat and free flow of wine. I already told my waiters that I wasn't interested on that so I checked the a-la-carte menu where I didn't find the Eggs Florentine. However they were part of the all you can eat option. At this point I asked if it was possible just to have a portion of "Eggs Florentine" and how much it was. The waitress told me that it was possible to have the dish and told me the price. When my dish arrived I was surprise to see that there was just one poor egg seated on a thin slice of bread and a slice of coppa (Italian cold cut). I have never seen anything more miserable in my life when it comes specifically to the Eggs Florentine as a dish. Obviously I ate the "dish" and I just wanted to pay and leave as soon as possible. When the waitress came to ask how I was I told her that I was deeply disappointed, I wanted to pay the bill and go. At this point the manager arrived to talk with me. I told her the reasons of my disappointment, she said that there were no articles in the HK blogs talking about the Eggs Florentine as one of their dishes. She challenged me and I proved her wrong in front of other customers as well. At this point she proposed me not to pay for the poor dish they brought me which I found just fair. She also tried to propose me to have another "Egg Florentine" for free because she said that she wants the customers of "El Gaucho" to leave with the smile. I said to her that I was fine and I just wanted to leave, I really just didn't like the confrontational attitude the manager had when we discussed about the blog post. In the end she asked for my email cause she probably wanted to invite/ propose me something for the future (?). She was so keen and clumsy in trying to make it up for all the bad situation that her and her staff created that I decided to give her a second chance. She proved herself not to be professional again as after one week from the episode I am still waiting for her email...

There are much better restaurants for your brunch in Central where the waiters are more professional, know the basics of the hospitality business and the managers genuinely try to make your Sunday morning experience a pleasant one.

It's the sort of place that is great to bring a client out for lunch.However, taste and presentation wise of the entree, mains and desserts were only average. The best part of the meal was actually the complimentary breads served before at starters. They were soft and fresh dough with strong tasty cheesy flavour


Guess for their normal set lunch price of around $230 isn't too bad in an interior like theirs even when the food are only average.
