When booking for a meal at Dan Ryan's, I've come to expect the service to be polite and attentive, the dishes relatively large, and reasonable value for money. However, my most recent visit was rather disappointing on several aspects. We were a group of three for lunch and had ordered a salad, the Norwegian salmon and the All Day Breakfast.
After ordering our dishes, Dan Ryan's normally serve bread, however, this didn't happen, so I looked around at other tables thinking that maybe this was now not the norm. But then I saw that other tables had empty bread baskets, so I asked a passing staff if we would be served bread and she replied "it was coming" without actually checking that it was or even looking like she cared. A further 10 minutes passed and still no bread. Then I noticed a table of 4 who had arrived after us were served their bread. This prompted me to ask a supervisor who then finally served our bread once I pointed out that the later table had got theirs first.
The salad arrived first which was a good 25 minutes before the other two dishes were served. This meant we had one of us finishing their meal before the rest of us had even got our dishes. When the remaining dishes arrived, the Norwegian salmon was awful: the fish had been overcooked and had become dry and tasteless. The vegetables too were also dry and those that were grilled had been burnt. The dish presentation just seemed sloppy.
For me, my All Day Breakfast was the most disappointing dish. Contrary to expectations from my previous experiences of Dan Ryan's the dish portion was disappointingly small and certainly not worth the money being charged. The fries were cold, the toast was stale, and the bacon had dried to a crisp. What made the dish even more unappetizing was the plate the food was served on had several large greasy fingerprints around the edge which made the overall dish look like it was served on unwashed crockery.
To add to the awful experience, we had an insect eventually crawl out of our bread basket which we could easily see over the white paper table cover. We made our complaints known, and the supervisor kindly removed the cost of our drinks from the bill. But despite this gesture, it still felt we had been overcharged considering the overall negative experience, which was just not up to what I've come to expect of Dan Ryan's. It's going to take some convincing for me to return there; that is, if they can survive our current environment.
