所以,這一間餐廳,其實是 a bit of everything。

Chicken Satay,

Bulgogi Pork Belly,

Xinjiang Spiced Lamb,

這兒的食品,令我覺得老外們會立即大叫,that's what it look like back home。

What happens when you come across a place that promises so much, but delivers so little? Somewhere that should be memorable but is almost instantly forgettable? Well, I for one get pretty disappointed and tell a few of my friends.

But, I'm getting ahead of myself. There has been a movement in many cities around the world to the speakeasy style of restaurant and bar. I've written about a few before and usually they are pretty cool and mysterious. The concept of the speakeasy was spawned in the early 1920's as a reaction to the completely ridiculous prohibition on alcohol, which to be honest also created the modern concept of organised crime - bootleggers anyone? Anyway, before I get too political, the speakeasy also went when prohibition ended, but they are back, and in a big way.

A speakeasy is essentially a secret bar, now often a secret restaurant but the irony is that they are often the most popular of places and hardly secret!

One speakeasy that's been garnering a lot of attention, both here and overseas is a little spot called Mrs Pound. Located in Sheung Wan, Mrs Pound has an interesting back story (found here in full), which includes a sordid but illustrious career of a burlesque dancer who was rumoured to have many lovers but eventually ran away with a conservative and reserved Hong Kong gentleman called Mr Ming. So enamoured with Mrs Pound was Mr Ming that he gave her his favourite stamp shop, which she promptly turned in to her personal playground, resplendent with secret entrance!

Now a restaurant, the secret entrance remains, although very few are fooled about how to enter and quite often the door is wide open, with the staff sprucing to entice passers by to come and taste their wares. However, every now and then, you hear stories of would be customers trying all manner of actions to gain entry, only to wander off in search of easier dinner! I think I need to set up a secret camera to record that!

Anyway, I won't spoil the secret but needless to say we gained entry pretty easily and found ourselves in a cool looking little spot that was as retro as you could get. In fact, we could easily have been transported to 1950's Vietnam, it was actually very cool. It was pretty quiet, with only one other table taken, so we had out pick of seats and were promptly given a couple of menus and had some drinks sent over. The menu is mostly Asian fusion, with no real centre, and there are dishes from all parts of Asia. Sectioned out into skewers, smaller and bigger, we picked out a random selection of items that caught our eye.

We kicked off with arguably the best dish on the menu, well, at least the best of those we selected! Sriracha sweet corn, which came with a sriracha kewpie-mayo, lime zest, ginger, garlic and pecorino cheese. The simply presented corn looked really appetising and after a few bites, you could really taste the heat from the sriracha and the cooling effects of the lime zest and creamy aftertaste of the pecorino. The corn was beautifully cooked and the skewer that it came with made eating relatively easy - although of course there was a huge mess around my mouth by the time I'd finished. Yeah, it was great corn!

The other dish I really enjoyed from our visit was the salted-egg-yolk squid, which was big chunks of fresh squid deep fried in an interesting batter of egg yolk. The bright red plate was piled high with golden nuggets of squid which smelled wonderful. Most of the pieces of squid were well cooked, you could bite in half with no problems, but some were a little tough and hard to chew through. Those softer bits of squid had an interesting flavour and texture from the egg yolk batter, it was thicker than I expected, but were really creamy in flavour, benefiting from the yolk.

They were the highlights, but unfortunately, it went downhill pretty quickly from there for me. I'd liked the concept of raspberry glazed flank steak, which had been marinated in a raspberry balsamic vinegar and flavoured with honey, garlic and ginger. Flank steak is a very tough cut of meat and if it's not cooked or prepared well, it can be as tough as old boots to eat. These pieces of flank were perhaps even tougher! Now, I have pretty darn sharp teeth and for the life of me, I couldn't bite through the pieces. I literally had to pick the steak up in my hand and maul like a tiger would and I still couldn't break into smaller (bite sized pieces). It was a shame, I quite liked the raspberry flavour with the beef.

Going from bad to worse, the next two dishes were almost inedible for me, although SC was able to get through them a little easier than me. I couldn't make up my mind which I liked least, the chicken meatballs presented in lemon grass stems or the bulgogi pork belly, which were presented as skewers. There was something about each that just didn't sit well on my palate, in the case of the chicken, it was the texture and flavour, and for the pork, it seemed to be massively overcooked and really tough. As it went, I could only have a bite from each, knowing that I'd feel really sick if I'd tried to eat more.

SC and I were at odds with the Rendang Bao, which was beef rendang in a char siu sauce and presented in a little seaming basket with the branding of Mrs Pound stamped on the bao. Now, I'm not sure if I was feeling the effects of the previous two dishes, but I took one bite of the bao and handed it over to the girl, who had actually devoured her bao in a couple of bites. There was something sickly sweet about the bao that just didn't sit well with me.

Our last dish was from the 'bigger' portion of the menu and Mrs Pound didn't lie about that, it was a massive bowl of wagyu fried rice. The massive bowl was filled to the brim with with soy sauce fried rice that had plenty of wagyu beef interspersed with shiitake mushrooms, daikon and scallions. By the time the rice had arrived, I was pretty much over Mrs Pound and made a half hearted attempt to eat the rice, but my heart just wasn't in it! There was nothing inherently wrong with the rice, it just came out at a point where my palate and spirits had been broken.

We decided against dessert and quickly made our exit after paying out bill, which was overpriced for what was presented. It's hard for me to be positive about the menu at Mrs Pound, even though there were a couple of delightful items, the overall effect on me was poor. I just didn't like the food on the whole.

And so, we loop back to my opening statement. Mrs Pound had the makings of a cool spot, but that was where it finished for me. It seemed as if Mrs Pound was trading on it's kitsch factor and it's admittedly cool entrance. Perhaps Mrs Pound would be better off remaining as a pure speakeasy bar and forget about the food.

Unfortunately, I found Mrs Pound to be completely...... sorry, what was I talking about again?

We pushed, pulled, knocked and searched. But trying to play it cool, we coyly waited for dinner guests to step out of the establishment. Interesting. I knew this was more than a meal. Having able to enter her lair (I'll have you figuring that out) you enter vibrant colors and little accessories that show who mrs. Pound is. Mirrors, fuschia , lace and flourescent all try to grab your attention. Service is as attentive and warm as mrs. Pound would have been to her guests. We are ushered into a booth closely seated to other guests. I could overhear conversations.
When it comes to the food: we tried the essentials: the corn, the chicken skewers with mint sauce, grilled mushrooms, and the bibimbap redefined. All came quickly enjoyed with cocktails. The grilled corn balanced sweetness with the spice and cheese, a medley of flavors perfectly synched. Like a true appetizer, it opened up my taste buds. The chicken skewers are albeit tough to chew on and the mushrooms were just mediocre. Then I heard the sizzling bibimbap coming with an aroma that sticks to you. Served in a clay pot, it sizzles, fragrant in southeast Asian spices, vibrant in colors, you mix it all together. It was a perfect definition to fusion cuisine. The rice could be eaten as it is. It made up for the mediocre skewers. The bibimbap redefined reminded me of how I could not let go of rice in my diet.
I ended a meal with my senses on full adrenaline. Like a great entertainer as I could have imagined, mrs. Pound will guarantee you will be back for her.;)

The dining mat was a piece of paper describing the story of Mrs Pound and her photos.

Finally, three of us selected 6 dishes as follows.
Avocado Fries - special dish we didn't try before;
Hainan chicken - chicken tastes good with 3 types of sauce;
lemongrass porkchop - the meat is tough not good;
Beef rendang - average;
Thai-style noodle - looked like rice noodle roll (腸粉);
Chicken/pork Satay - average, not tasty, a little bit tough and the sauce is not good.

Every dish was very small. For rice, we can either select traditional rice, ginger rice or india pancake.

We chose ginger rice but it got some oil inside. It made us very full after eating the ginger rice. Although the dishes were small, we got very full and could not finish all of them. I thought it's because of the oil in the rice. For the drink, I selected mint soda. It was nice.

Overall, the dishes are not tasty but it got special feeling in decoration and design. For waiting dishes time, it was a little bit long and they forgot to give me rice when dishes arrived.

After reading so many rave reviews about this place, we were dying to try it.  This was after one failed attempt to get in on a Friday with 4 people (2 hour wait for a table) left us deciding to try again with the 2 of us for an early sitting.
Although I did have to literally climb over the laps of the diners sitting within 1 inch of our table on either side of us, I settled into my chair and we ordered the following dishes:

Avocado Fries- Yum!
Bulgogi Skewers (which never arrived)
Chicken Meatball skewers- average
Prawn fried with egg- Gluggy and tasteless
Ginger rice- beautiful, sticky, and slightly sweet
Steak Salad, delicious
Kale Salad- dry and boring

This place is so focused on trying to be the hippest place in town and needs to re-focus on the actual food.  ALL of our dishes arrived to eat at once and even though there was no room left on our mini table, the server just piled each dish atop the other.  I felt like they just wanted us out so they could continue packing the next diners in on our mini table.

Definitely ticked the box on this 'Too Cool for School' establishment.  Not visiting again.

It was pig-out night with @hangrywifey, so we let the food flow a bit more than usual, which is never a bad thing! So, everyone’s been raving about the Sriracha Sweet Corn (58HKD), and rightly so!!!! The Sriracha flavour is buried between layers of butter and parmesan, and only kicks shortly after first bite. I fell in love with the creamy consistency of the perfectly grilled corn kernels causing me to want another, and another, and another. However, this was not *that* kind of pig-out night. This dish though, obviously, is the most accessible and the one not-to-be-missed. Enough said. I’m still imagining the flavour. Visions of kernels float in my head.

The Xinjiang Spiced Lamb, (40HKD/skewer - minimum 2) came next, and it was a taste explosion. The meat was lean, juicy and full of flavour. I loved the slight hint of spice and, paired with the light and refreshing homemade pesto sauce provided as the side, the meat just couldn’t go wrong! Warm, plump and delightful, I could have gone for another order of these as well!

The only dish that slightly disappointed was the Rendang Poutine (125HKD), but that was only because the fries were not very crispy. That was completely forgiven due to the multilayered textures rippling through the rendang itself. The meat was so tender and the rendang (I lived in Malaysia for 4 years, so rendang has become an old friend quite quickly) was just beautiful. Sweet and spicy at the same time, it brought back memories of rendangs past. A tad expensive for the amount of poutine received, but utterly delicious all the same.

The final dish was the Double-fried ‘Ma La’ Wings (75HKD), covered in fried garlic and chilli peppers. Not overly spicy, the garlic/pepper combo added to the complexity of the dish, but for me the pièce de résistance was how extraordinarily tender and succulent the chicken meat tasted. Sweet goodness, I was in love. I may have even written a short song including the lyrics “Ma La, you could never be gau la”. Teehee.

For drinks, @hangrywifey ordered a Bohemian Sour (110HKD), and couldn’t stop raving about the spice (or was it tea?) placed on top which yielded a smokey flavour in her nose while drinking. We neglected to find out what it was, so you might just have to ask for yourself! I opted for a Japanese Craft Beer, Yona Yona Ale (68HKD), and, as should be expected with beer, loved every drop of it.

All in all, there wasn’t a bad bite in the place. Every bite seemed better than the last, and that is a special thing when eating such delicious food so regularly.
Finally, the only negative about Mrs. Pound is how tiny the space actually is. I continually felt that I was enjoying a meal with the table next to us, rather than with my fiancé; but that’s oftentimes just how HK is, so we put it past us and focused on the meal itself. If one can keep that focus in mind, I have no doubt that Mrs. Pound will deliver every time. Keep it up!

History: Story has it that Mrs Pound used to be a burlesque dancer but finally met the love of her life Mr Ming who set her up in Hong Kong with this secret stamp shop...

Food
The lunch menu is almost totally different from the dinner menu - unfortunately. I was sorely disappointed with their selections and with the food they served:

Flavour was good, fresh, piquant; serving was unsubstantial. Under that salad is an inedible coconut husk placed there to make it look like there's more salad than there actually is. Apologies for the photo as I had half eaten it already before remembering to take a snapshot!

The texture was decent and tender. There was a lot of meat served but we wish there were more greens (cabbage) as well. The darker greens were so salty it hurt. The rice was not soft and warm but a little dry and cold. UGh!!!!

I was so disappointed with Mrs Pound the first time I came but I decided to give it another chance for dinner the next evening, since the menu was different. Turned out to be a good decision because the experience was so much better!

Food (Dinner): No photos for this section, sorry - it was too dark!

Rendang baos ($45) Delicious! Perfect baos and well-spiced and textured beef rendang (Indonesian stewed beef) inside.

Sriracha street corn ($58) Yummy! A lot of flavour on perfectely-cooked corn on the cob. I really appreciated the cheese and sauce that gave it a good spicy kick although it wasn't HOT at all (I actually cannot handle my spices).

Hainanese chicken rice ($148) I LOVE my chicken rice and this was was great except the CHICKEN was not meaty enough. It was a skinny, bony chicken.

Thai milk tea cake ($50) Great consistency, great concept, not to sweet, but could have had more flavour.

Service: They had a lot of young international students serving up dinner, so they weren't exactly the most experienced servers out there. They kept taking the plates too fast before we were even finished with our food! I noticed we weren't the only ones who were having this problem because I saw other diners still wanted to keep the sauce on their plates but the servers took them away immediately. ANNOYING.

Would I go back? Yes, but only for dinner. Never again for lunch. I'd like to try their other signature dishes including the bulgogi pork belly skewer ($38) and Mrs P’s chilli crab ($468).

Walk in at 12pm and they were serving brunch. Took them 15 mins to bring my coffee. Fine. It's just coffee. Ordered Laksa and Nasi Goreng from the menu and one other Rendang Pau. Now good people out there, if you have tasted Laksa and Nasi Goreng, I am quite sure at some point you would have, I can assure you the worst of the worst would have tasted better than those served today. The Laksa is absolutely bland without flavours. No spice, no salt and no taste. All you get for the price over HKD10

All you get for the price over HKD100 is lots of noodle and some pretty sad looking tiny weenie prawns and some miserable fish balls.

Now for the Nasi Goreng, it is not Nasi Goreng period. It is serve on a hot stone bowl as you would get from those Bibimbap dish. The dish lacks flavour and wet all over.

I had bad meals before and this is definitely one of the worst.

The front may look like a Chinese stamp shop but once you step inside, you feel like you have been transported to a retro 60's burlesque club complete with neon lights, mirrors with lipstick on it, and hot pink & turquoise colors.

The lunch sets were reasonable at around $100 including salad and drinks with 6 choices to choose from. I was debating between the Bak Kuh Teh, Hainan Chicken and Beef Rendang but finally went with the Bak Kuh Teh since it is only available at lunch.

Lemongrass Ice Tea (+$25) - when the wait staff was rattling off the drinks available, they failed to mention that this would cost extra. It's not a lot of money but it's just never good to have your customers be surprised when they get the bill. Besides, this wasn't really worth the extra charge as the lemongrass aroma was faint and it didn't taste any different from a regular ice tea. [3/5]

The salad that came with the lunch set was pitifully tiny but at least it was tart and spicy so it was actually quite appetizing.

Bak Kuh Teh ($95) - I ended up having to wait half an hour for this but good thing it was worth the wait! The stew arrived piping hot and it was aromatic and flavorful. Just wished that the broth had a stronger herbal flavor which is usually what I prefer with my bak kuh tehs. The pork was quite tender and there were lots of it along with tofu. It also came with a Chinese donut but it wasn't fluffy enough compared to the ones at congee shops. [4/5]

Verdict - the restaurant seems to have teething problems with its service, but Mrs. Pound is definitely worth a second visit at night where they serve more innovative Asian street food like pork bulgogi skewers, spicy corns and beef rendang baos along with mains like hainan chicken and chili crab!

From Time Out, it said the restaurant is named "Mrs. Pound" but only it was disguised as stamp shop named "Mr. Ming's Stamp Shop". There is some weird backstory where Mrs. Pound is a burlesque dancer who ran away with her lover, "Mr. Ming", who created a stamp shop as a front  for her restaurant so she could create Asian cuisine. The door of the restaurant is hidden and only opened by a "secret" button disguised as one of the stamps. You had to find it or the door won't open. And like all hidden establishments, only the cool kids knew how to get in. Does it not sound cool? Yeah, I needed to be one of the cool kids, so off I went!

I found out they served a very decently priced lunch set and so I set out to go there on my day off as I wanted to also do a little art gallery hopping. It's located at the end of Tai Ping Shan Street, near the red colored Pak Shing Temple. I was all set to find the stamp that I press to open the door. However, when I got there, the door was wide open and a huge sign with the lunch menu was placed in the front. Um....not so secret after all? Anyways .... kinda disappointed in that, I was greeted by a waiter who showed me a table in the back room. I am glad I got there early because later the place became full house.

The restaurant is stylish and hip. It looked like an American diner, complete with leather bar seats and booths. There were scatterings of old photos and memorabilia, supposedly from "Mrs. Pound".

I was presented with the lunch menu. Prices were around $100 and included a salad and drink. I decided on the beef randang and an ice tea.

Food came quite a while. I think I waited a good 15 minutes before I was presented with the lunch set "salad". I was informed by the staff that it was complimentary. I put the "salad" in quotes because it was literally one slice of tomato sliced in half and a few pieces of frisee. However, it was super spicy and tangy at the same time. So spicy that this amount was the perfect amount because any more and I wouldn't have been able to eat it. But I did like the mix of spicy with sour. It was good challenge to one's palette.

My beef randang wasn't very pretty to look at. It looked like a plate of rice with some meat on the side. Very cha chan teng-like. But tastewise, it was amazing. The beef was soft. So soft it fell apart with my fork as I was mixing it with my rice. It also wasn't dry and chewy like a lot of beef randang I've had. The sauce was incredible. A nice mixture of sweet with a touch of spice. But not so spicy I couldn't eat it. It was wonderful and I finished off every last drop. Completely cleaned off the plate.

Service was friendly and spoke English only. I was presented with my food with a smile each time. A smile. So rare in Hong Kong! Yes, food took quite a while to be served but I think this is one of those places where you shouldn't go to if you want to rush out of there. I will return again. Possibly for lunch again. I would love to return for dinner one day to try out their a la carte menu.
