Original Art was a complete surprise to me. Located in the YWCA in Kowloon Tong area, I came here for dinner with my cousin as he lived in this area and I had to pick up something from him. He mentioned this new place near his home and gave me such a raving review of it, it peaked my interest. I've rarely heard him recommend a place to eat.The place is a bit hidden as it's located in the corner of the YWCA building. What further surprised me is that there were a few other people dining there. The place is a bit hidden as it's located in the corner of the YWCA building.
What further surprised me is that there were a few other people dining there. It appeared they also lived in this area or perhaps were members of the YWCA as they were offered a discount.
The place was decorated with a "art-like" theme. There was a sketch table on one side.
And drawings on the wall with an explanation of local artist. A tiny little exhibition.
Menu is in English and Chinese. They offer a dinner set for two that costs $788.
However, you can also order a la carte.
I noticed that if you order any main, a drink is included. Thus, we ordered a la carte by ordering two mains and added a soup and shared an appetizer.
Daily Soup ($38). The daily soup was a carrot soup. It was very rich and creamy. Never had I had a carrot soup with so much flavor. It came with a slice of crispy garlic toast.
Nachos with Avocado Sauce ($68). My cousin wanted to share a plate of nachos. Personally, I'm picky about nachos as no one in Hong Kong does it correctly. This place also failed to do it properly. It was fine I guess for Hong Kong style but not nachos I or my North American friends grew up with. My cousin was raised in the UK so he thought they were fine. They did use Doritos instead of plain tortilla chips. They also added a very small amount of shredded cheese. It just wasn't enough cheese and something I found in every place in Hong Kong that serves nachos. They served the toppings separately in little dishes for dipping. Instead of how proper nachos should be, thrown all together. This I also found in some places in Hong Kong. The toppings were fine though. They included the usual: sour cream, guacomole (which they called avocado sauce) and salsa. The guacomole was smooth. I prefer my guacomole chunky but it still tasted quite nice though. The salsa was fantastic. It had a slight kick but was still refreshing from the the herbs used in it.
Angus Rib Eye Steak ($238). The flavors here were spot on. We asked for a medium rare and got a medium rare. The steak was moist and tender. AND perfectly seasoned. In fact everything on this plate was seasoned! How many times have I gone to place where they season the steak and forget completely about the vegetables? But here was not the case. The vegetables were roasted and seasoned. The potatoes! Were actually fully cooked. I didn't get one semi raw potato, something so common in Hong Kong. It was also served in a lovely rich cream sauce. The gravy was rich and savory. I almost drank it, it was that good.
Spaghetti with Tiger Prawn in Lobster Sauce ($148). The pasta was al dente. The prawn was perfectly cooked and seasoned. But the star was none of those but the sauce. The sauce was rich and flavorful. Just packed with an intense seafood flavor. There was enough to coat the pasta properly.
We finished our meal with an ice lemon tea as I was way too full for dessert. This place is truly a gem. The food was excellent. Well prepared and delicous. Seasoning was spot on. A bit hiden, but worth the find. No wonder the diners here seemed like regulars.
