There are few restaurants in HK that I hold dear to my heart - and St Betty is one of them. The restaurants boasts one of the most immaculate views of the harbour that I have ever seen, and the ambience itself will lure you in. Whether you are just visiting Hong Kong or have lived here for years, that divine view never gets tiresome. We were seated right away, and greeted by an attentive and smiling staff clad in kitschy checked aprons. They werent the type of staff (like in so many HK establishments) that barely knew the menu, but actually gave genuine opinions of the courses they themselves savor. We were even bid adieu personally by one of the chefs, and that gesture will forever remain etched in my memory. If you can, sit near the back, where one can sneak views of the happenings in the kitchen.I knew that the food would be nothing less than paradisiacal - what with the resto headed by a two Michelin star chef. I entered the restaurant with my expectations high, my stomach rumbling, and my curiosity peaked. The first dish I ravaged was the ambrosial ceviche of hamachi with avocado creme fraiche. I HIGHLY receommend. The menu is tremendously varied, and I had a hard time choosing between a 21st century egg with black truffle dressing or honey and soy-glazed ribs. I instinctively yearned to covet the saffron risotto, but I dared myself to be a bit more adventurous. I tend to suffer from truffle obsession as well, so I vehemently restrained myself from sampling my usual go to dishes. I opted for the seared fois gras embellished with orange marmalade and pecan nuts. Truly magnifique, and I would encourage everyone to utilize all the diverse ingredients in every dish that balance each other out in flawless harmony.Restaurants are ubiquitous in HK, so it takes something truly notable for me to want to go back repeatedly and recommend to others. From the moment I walked into Grassroots Pantry, I knew that I was in store for a special experience. Unlike the usual Hong Kong establishments that treat restraunts like some sort of factory assembly line, Grassroots makes every person feel as if they are at home. Welcomed by smiling and friendly faces, I excitedly took my seat among the other patrons. Our kind hostess took us through the menu, and seemed to genuinely care about what we were ordering and if we would like it. I have never had such attentive service at any restaurant in Hong Kong! I found myself obssessing over the kitschy decor that complemented the bright windows/ambience so effortlessly. Greeted by fresh flowers and antiques at every turn, its evident that each piece of decor tells a story - lots of Eastern and South Asian influences. Now for the food: I opted for the set lunch, and relished the idea of devouring vegetable makhani. Now normally I find myself struggling to keep my eyes open after consuming any type of curry, but after my dish at Grassroots, I didn't feel the least bit tired. Delicious food without the oily and rich feeling.Though I had been dying to savor the raw blueberry cheesecake, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try this innovative fig concoction the chef put together.
