DELICIOUS LUNCH
城寨風味
2014-04-11
This is a very local restaurant which is a few blocks from my apartment. As a foreigner, finding a nice, reasonably price restaurant with delicious food is rare and challenging. This is 'wall city flavours'. It is situated along the end of a row of shophouses ('Tong Lau' in Cantonese) away from Ngai Tsin Wai road (the main artery road in kowloon city). Due to the MTR expansion, road works are presently being carried out right at its front door steps. The restaurant appears to be fairly well known locally, because whenever we are there, the restaurant is usually packed. Thus, we chose a Saturday lunch to avoid the crowd. The restaurant decor is very oriental and chinese with very old chinese tables and paintings. It has several booth seats along the full glass facade on one side of the restaurant but the view is just MTR expansion. :)For lunch we ordered:1.   Grilled suckling pig - HK$1082.   Claypot fried beef cubes - HK$883.   Daily boiled soup - $24 ($12 each)4.   Fried mussels in XO sauce - $685.   Rice - $126.   Tea - $24 ($12 x2)7.   Service charge - 10%The grilled suckling pig was fabulously grilled. Juicy and crunchy, the skin was almost perfect with no underlaying level of fats. This is a must have for this restaurant and they serve the suclkling pig in different portions at different price. The fried beef cubes were marvellously fried. Similar to the pig, the beef was cruchy and very tasty. Very juicy very fresh. The mussels were very 'sambal'. Very nicely fried and the mussels were all fresh as they were all opened shell. A little spicy but overall very very tasteful. The boiled daily soup was the restaurant speciality. Unlike some other restaurant, where such soup were very diluted, the soup here has more 'body' and is tastier than others we have seen.Overall, it was a pleasant meal.We completed the meal with a promotion 'bird nest' dessert at HK$88.Overall our meal cost HK$550.Lastly, I must say that I have also tried their sweet and sour pork which itself was one of the best of such dishes I have tried. …查看更多

SIMPLE & DELICIOUS
Chez Patrick Restaurant
2014-04-11
At the point of writing this, I have already been to the restaurant for 4 times. On each and all occassions, the dining experience was near perfect. (perfection is an illusion).I write on my first experience at dinner on 29 March 2014.:)1.   The restaurant was very simply designed with modern awnings and wall paper. It was located diagonally opposite the Hopewell centre. 2.   When we arrived, we were immediately shown to our table at a comfortable corner and was offerred the drink list and the menu. 3.  Apart from ala carte, there were a choice of 1,2 or 3  course set dinners to choose from ranging from a price of HKD$280 to 480 per person.4.  We ordered a 3 course dinner each at HK$480+ each.5.  My wife had : Foie Gras Trio, John Dory and Lavender creame brulee     I had : Scallops Duo, Grilled Pigeon and Appla Tart.6.  The Foie Gras was served in 3 small portions in 3 different forms - beautifully cooked from grilled, fried and terrine. My wife loved all the flavours from the lusciously cooked dish.7.  The John Dory fillet was cooked in white wine sauce and was delightfully delicious. the skin was crispy and the fillet.. - warmth and juicy.8.  The lavender creame brulee was unusual in its name but was aromatically baked and deliciously true to its flavours.9.  As for my scallops, they were beautifully grilled and overlayed with homemade sauce. Very fragrant and rich and was the best dish amongst all of my choice.10.  The grilled pigeon was very juicy. Not dry as was assurred to me by the chef. Lots of 'character' with each bite oozing with flavour from the red colour sauce which accompanied the dish.11.  Lastly, the  apple tart which like the creame brulee, was freshly baked on our orders (we usually order dessert at the end of our second course). The crust was crispy and piping hot. Fillings of apples were fresh and hot. Right from the oven to our table.12.  The evening meal was a sumptuous and very satisfying gourmet experience.13.  As for the wine, we ordered 3 glasses of Rose. I completed the night with a Graham 10yrs Vintage Port.14. Before I conclude, I must add that the restaurant carries a unique personal touch of chef Patrick. Chef patrick will go from table to table of guest seeking their feedback on his dishes and even recommending them dishes. It was the personal interaction with the chef that has made the experience ever more personal, delightful and enjoyable.15.  Lastly, one more surprise for the restaurant came in its bread basket. The bread was a  home made baguette and was very crunchy and tastety. It carries a uniquely different taste from normal baguette- slightly more tasty with a warmth - centre portion. Beautiful..16.  We completed the evening by buying a fresh loaf of baguette from who else..but the chef himself.17.  Total bill with 3 rose + port + dinner = HKD$1,470…查看更多

DISAPPOINTING DELICACY
明閣 (香港康得思酒店)
2013-09-26
We always wanted to try this restaurant but was turned away on at least 4 occassions (informed that the restaurant was full) whenever we wanted to make a booking for 2. So this time, we decided to book a table for 5 which we obained in a breeze. It dawned upon us that the restaurant have very limited quota for 2 persons dining. Having been rated a Michelin chinese dining, we were all looking forward to the cherished experience accompanying such ranking. However, Ming Court gave us a rather very different experience. After we were ushered to our table, the waitresses deserted us. We felt we were just 'dumped' at our table. Although we calculated that there were 7 service staff loitering around 6 tables + probably 3 function rooms, we could not get any attention at all.We had to wait for the next 5 minutes to lay our hands on the Menu. During this time, the waitresses 'disappeared' again. A waitress finally came back to ask us for drinks. No recommendations on tea was made although there were at least 6 - 7 different chinese tea types plus a full drink list of wine and spirits. We asked for recommendations and the waitress could not answer us nor could she find a better educated waitress to assist her. No one came to us to offer any suggestion or advice. In the course of this, my wife chose the most expensive tea which we assume will come in a pot but instead it came in individual portions or cups. So we had exquisite chinese tea for 2 adults and 3 children each with their own cup. Ordering of food was the next major 'hurdle'.We were not aware of the size of portions, the recommended dishes or even how it will be served. So we ordered the following:1. Ginseng Soup - (HK$138 per portion x 2) The chinese soup was stated to be per person and we ordered 2 portions of ginseng soup. When this arrived, the soup was so big that all 5 of us were sharing the 2 portions. 2. Peking duck - (HK$688) This was a dish which my daughter loves. Before we comment on the dish, it is useful to note that when we were ordering this dish, we were informed by one of the waitress that she needed to confirm with the kitchen, on whether they have any Peking duck. The waitress 'disappeared ' and was never seen again. We waited stupidly for the next 5-10 minutes for her to revert on whether there was Peking duck. :( :(..... In any case, we managed to 'grab/seize' another of these 'disappearing' waitresses and made our order.Returning to the duck - When the duck arrived, we noticed that the duck was smaller than most 'normal' duck. We each had only 3-4 pieces. The dish was served rather cold - don't know where they found their escaping duck.... -:(. The Duck texture was rather tough. The pieces of Peking duck had more meat with only a small layer of skin attached on each piece. Some pieces had meat and NO SKin . The sauce for the spread was rather salty. the pancakes were thicker than what we had experienced. Overall the dish was palatable was not brilliant. We have tasted better Peking duck.  3. Sweet and sour pork- (HK$198) this is a good dish to 'test' the chef. The pork was soft and the sweet sauce was just right. But we noted that it was saltier than other sweet and sour pork we have tasted. The Sauce was not well spread to achieve a coat on each and all the meat pieces. It seems that the Chef was cooking it very fast and/or was cursorily in the preparing the dish. Overall it was acceptable but again not brilliant.4. Fried Rice - (HKD$268). This was abalone fried rice. Fried rice is also a good test for a chef. In order to achieve excellence, the rice have to be cooked to perfection - not too dry but cooked. The frying has to coat each bead of rice with the flavour of the item it is fried with - in this case it was abalone. This must be the best dish that nite. Very well fried with oozing abalone flavour in each bead of rice. Very generous serving of abalone which were cut into small pieces. Brilliant.5.  Wagyu Beef - (HK$438) - this was cooked with black sauce and fried garlic. It was accompanied by sweet roasted walnuts in a side bowl. Very aromatically flavoured. Very good. Excellently fried. Beef had very juicy texture and taut but not soft. Good but not great dish.6.  Shrimp on snow - (HK$338). We wanted to try this dish as it looks modern and was recommended in the Menu ( no guidance from 'disppearing waitresses' ). It came in 6 pieces of big prawns. On the menu, it stated that it was deep fried in egg yolk and laid on steam egg white. But when it came, the deep fried skin was soggy and the whole presentation resembles some badly meshed prawn in steamed egg white. Very unpleasant. It seems like the chef had deepfried the prawns in egg yolk but steamed the deep fried prawns with the egg white thus resulting in the mesh up presentation. It was a disaster. Throughout our dinner, service was extremely bad. Waitresses continue to disppear. Our plates were never changed despite all the dishes we had. Our tea pot with hot water was not refilled. We attempted once to get it refilled. But the disappearing waitress even took the pot and never returned. We did not enjoy our dining experience that night. For the bad experience we paid HK$2811. To us an overall dining experience must come in the food and in the service. The expectation is even higher if the restaurant has a Michelin rating. Thus, we will not be recommending our friends to experience the same bad service as we have had from this restaurant. …查看更多

NOTHING UNUSUAL OR USUAL
Brotzeit German Bier Bar & Restaurant
2013-09-26
Brought our daughter to this German joint as she wanted to try some German food.We had visited this place on 2 earlier occassions. I was told that it is operated by a German family who are the chef and bar tenders. We knew what we wanted and we avoided what we dread.Lets start with the 'no no' food. This must be their German pizza. It is baked on 'German' bread which is rather dry and thick and SOFT !!!!! yes SOFT. When it gets cold - you probably tasted the worse pizza in your life.Generally the rest of the menu is edible and rather delicious. For this nite, we ordered the following:1. Sausage platter - (HK$168) This was an appetiser and consist of mixture of different sausages. Probably 5 kinds, each sausage cut in 3 pieces. The platter was served on a smoothed out tree bark. Very 'flint-stones'. :). Taste was delicious. The sausages were grilled to perfection with aromatic bbq flavouring each bite..2. Pork Medallion - (HK$188) This dish consist of 4 round shaped pork which were wrapped round with bacon. Very tasty. The Pork texture was just right/soft. Juicy and not dry very delicately grilled and finished. 3. Pork cheese sausages - (HK$135) This is a 'must have' here. 6 pieces of sauasages with sauskraut by the side..fabulously grilled sauasages. Sauskraut was just nicely sour. Delicious...We rounded up with the following dessert:a.  Chocolate cake - (HK$78)usual with hot coco filling. Nothing remarkable.b.  Apple strudel - (HK$75) The apple was hot with the cold ice cream by the side. taste was accepatble but not spectacular. On the whole, the food was acceptable. But a major failing was the service standards. Although the restauarant was not full-house, it was a chore getting attention. The waitress (I believe from Nepal - cannot understand English very well) actually missed our dessert order. We were assured that the dessert will arrive in another 20 minutes which became another 15 minutes just to get our dessert. All in all it was a 45 minute wait for dessert. Not really well desserts..as well. :(The service standards resemble more like a fast food restaurant 'Dennys' rather than an aspiring good restaurant. Sad but the service brings down the overall food experience of this otherwise cozy family restaurant. Our total bill came up to HK$1115 for (2 magaritas + 2 bottled Pilsner beers)…查看更多

DELICIOUS THAI
Banyan Thai
2013-09-17
Having been based in Bangkok for several years, we have been very careful and selective in our choice of Thai restaurant. We decided on Banyan Thai that sunday as we were craving for Thai Chicken rice.I have been to this restaurant several times and was attempting to introduce my wife to the very authentic Thai chicken rice. For this occassion it was a sunday lunch and the restaurant was rather empty. it is usually very busy during weekday lunch. We ordered :1. Tom Yam goong (HKD$148)- We took the large portion for 8 bowls. It came with 4 big prawns. It was very well done. Very coconut and but lean towards a sour taste rather than a sweet taste. But It was potent. Each spoon ful send chills of flavour flowing doan my stomach...very very good.2. Chicken rice -(HKD$78) I have always been attracted by the thai chicken rice here. Being of hainanese heritage, I can attest to the taste of a richly flavoured chicken rice. But Thai chicken rice are very unique - both in the chilli sauce and the flavoured rice as well as the accompanying soup.If anyone have tasted the road side chicken rice stalls in Bangkok - BANYAN THAI is all about authentic Bangkok roadside chicken rice. Even the chilli paste and the soup.....man !!!!!!! It is like you are in Bangkok !!!!! The soup is fabulous and comes with a piece of melon.  The rice is so fragrant and each bead is loose from the rest.. 3. Moo Yang ( pork neck bbq) - (HKD$78) This is so authetic Thai. but we find that the texture of the pork is tougher and more taut than the ones we had in Bangkok - or in kowloon city. But overall still very smoky and tasty. We were throughly satisfied. Decent meal at decent price.  We paid HKD$350.I have tried other food like the fried vermicelli with crab meat. you may need to ask for more salt for that dish. :)In any event, I will recommend this for cheap authentic Thai...…查看更多

NOT GOOD FOR VALUE
灘萬日本料理 (九龍香格里拉) (九龍香格里拉大酒店)
2013-09-17
It was our night out and my wife and I decided to return to this restauarant. We have not been to Nadaman since we relocated to HK. We last come here as tourist in 2010. We love the Teppan which was cooked under the supervision of a Japanese chef. The restaurant was different this time. For a start the Japanese Teppan chef must have returned to Japan. We were served by a local chef -KIT.We decided to order 2 set teppan set at HKD$720 ( seafood) and a special Teppan set at HKD$980 ( comes with foie gras ) plus Sashimi platter at HKD$450 and hot sake.To begin with, the service was very casual and not attentive. There were 2 Teppan in operation (each with 8 seaters) but there was only one serving waitress. we had to frantically seek her attention for orders or requests. For the food,Seafood teppan comes with :a. half a baby lobster - we were not informed that it was a half lobster'. The lobster was obviously frozen - totally dead. The lobster meat was sliced off the shell and cook teppan style. Strangely, the dish was served with 2 slices of bread with a lobster paste spread on the bread. Due to the crowd at the table ( we had 6 diners in our Teppan table), the bread was hastily and half cooked. Thus, part of the bread was cold. The 'dead' lobster could not be more 'dead' and was rather tasteless. Due to the size of the lobster, there were only 4 small mouthful and thumb-size pieces.b. Scallops - It was advertised as fresh scallop. But when it arrived for cooking, it was as 'dead' as the lobster. It was only 1 piece of Scallop about the size of a 3.5 cm diameter and about 1.5 cm thick. The scallop was cooked with soy sauce and set in a scallop shell - shell looks re-used. Due to the size of the scallop, only 3 pieces equivalent to 2 HK$0.2 cents coins. It was served with soy sauce + a bitter tasting vegetable...c. Vegetables we had bean sprouts - only bare bean sprouts - no spring onions, mushroom or whatever else..only bean sprouts. it was terribly cooked. Very raw and in some case even soft - not fresh bean spoutsd. fried rice was too starchy and 'wet'. e. Soup - lobster and miso mix - normal. It was a 5 course.Special teppan set,1. Foie gras - this was well cooked except that the apple sauce taste more French than Japanese. But it was the best of all the bad dishes.2. Wagyu beef - I chose the version wrapped with garlic and greens. The beef was nice and soft. I was to have been served 3 slices of this. But due to the crowd, the chef decided to give me one piece at a time and each piece arrived on my plate at 7 minutes apart... Some service !!!! 3. I had the same old 'dead' scallop.4. I had the same un fresh bean sprouts. 5. I had the same starchy fried rice.6. Same soup.It was a 6 course dinner The only saving grace that night was the sashimi which taste vintage Japanese. For HKD$450, we had 4 choices- salmon, maguro, scallop and hashimi. Good. Our 2 small sakes cost us HKD$220 and HKD$240 each. Overall the total bill for the night was HKD$2,871.Not a satisfying meal. Failed our expectation of a NADAMAN. Terribly disappointed with the food and the service. As a closing act, the waitress did not even bother getting my suit for me. I was left to remove my suit cover and pick up my own suit .. I do not blame her..after all she was over worked serving 14 diners in 2 Teppan tables. It was way too below our expectation of NADAMAN..…查看更多

TASTEFULLY ITALIAN
帕維亞意大利餐廳
2013-09-11
My children wanted Italian on Sunday nite and we decided to try this cafe style Italian near our house.I was glad we made a reservation as it was busy by the time we arrived at the cafe at 645pm. The cafe decor was simple yet quaint as in cafes in Italy. The walls were painted red, with pictures on the walls and the atmosphere was nice and cosy. However, we realise that there were 2 levels for seating and we had felt that the upper level was quieter and more comfrtable than the noisier ground level. We next checked the menu - no kids menu here..We ordered the following:Appetisers1. Parma ham with rock melon $108 - 6 pieces of melon with a slice of ham wrapped around each melon. Presentation was not there. Not very impressed. Although the grade of ham was good but we felt the dish was not worth its value. Could have been better with more ham slices.2. Calamari rings $98 - although expensive, it came in a large plate.  Very tastefully flavoured and enjoyable.3. Lobster bisque $75 - Generously huge bowl. But we could not appreciate a richly flavoured, bodied soup with an empowering bitter taste. 4. Garlic bread $25 - Surprisingly small serving but overall it was good but can be more crispy which we forgot to request.Mains5. Sphagetti Cabonara $98- Large plate. Good with enough cheese and very nice larger bacon pieces6. Hawaiian Pizza $78 - 6 slices at about 8-10in. good chunky sweet pine apples + ham 7. Beef Lasagna $118 - very good - generous beef serving and very well flavoured. 8. Ravioli $158 - This was beautifully done with fabulous flavor. Stuffed with muchrooms and scallops. However, one little complaint was that the skin was a little too 'tough'. But then again softer skin may result in 'breakage' when soaked in the rich creamy sauce. Thus there needs to be a balance. 9. Fresh New Zealand mussels $168 - Definitely refreshing in a light cream sauce. This came in 12 pieces ( I think) and can be shared as an appetiser or taken as a main. Great with bread.10. Prime Sirloin steak $298 - very well prepared. Deliciously soft but tangy. Served on nice sauce with vegetables and roasted potatoes.Dessert11. Chocolate pudding - rather a hot choclate cake - almost similar to delifrance version - not impressed.12. Lemon Sorbet - this was interesting and home made. Just enough 'sourness' to kill any after taste. Cleansing and refreshing.Drinks13. We had 2 glasses of Rose- overall we were not charmed by the wine list.We note that the average portions are rather large and thus a majority of the patrons were in fact sharing their food. We had ordered individual portions and thus the waitresses were not aware of that we were not sharing and thus the sequence of our dishes were all disrupted and 'messed up'. So make sure you inform the staff in advance. We also noted that the staff was not very well trained or had no serving experience. Even the Manager seems 'lost' at times. We had to repeat our request on 4 occassion just to request for more serviettes.  No dishes were offerred. No suggestions were made. It was a very much DIY service. Additionally, there was no children menu..not very child friendly. Drinks were on the higher price side with a glass of sprite starting at hkd$28.Overall, the blend and taste of food is good. But it seems to us that the cafe is a 'sharing' restaurant where patrons share their food due to the higher price per dish as well as the larger portions per dish.We spend a total of HKD$1950. We like the food but then this cafe model may not be good for us. As the cafe is new, it seems that it is still attempting to 'find its way' in terms of pricing and portions. Thus resulting in the larger portions of each dish being deliberately priced higher.  In conclusion, we like individual portions which should come at affordable price and in palatable individual portions.  …查看更多

SUMPTUOUSLY SATISFIED

My wife and I was searching for the 'perfect' Singapore food ....instead of flying home to Singapore ...Heard of this recommendation from a friend and decided to make a reservation for lunch. The cafe is on the 3rd floor of a hotel, whose lobby area is itself on the 2nd floor. the ground floor facing the Empress Street west was rather inconspicuous. Anyway the taxi took us there and the taxi appear to be very familiar with Sai Wan area. The restaurant had only 3 tables when we arrived at 12.30 pm. The Menu was fabulously Singaporean ... with fried char kway teow ( also known as ' Penang fried kway Teow'), Hainanese chicken rice, bak kut teh, prawn mee......mee goreng...Being consciously Singaporean, we could tell the Malaysian dishes apart. The Malaysian taste varies with Singapore taste in many subtle ways. It could be more spicy, more sweet or even sour in some aspect. However the basic taste of the dish will remain acceptable to both Malaysian and Singaporeans. Regretting that we both had only 2 stomachs we could only order the following:Main : 1. Penang fried kway teow - Spicy and dark versions. The more refined versions sold in hotels rather than the oily and black sauce version sold in Singapore 'kopi tiam'. But has the 'wok fried' smell and flavour.2. Mee siam - the Chinese version with 'dou chio' and sweet bean taste rather than the malay version - but the taste was very rich and very tastefully flavoured and seasoned.3. Satay chicken + beef ( came in 2 sticks each - was fabulously bbq - very similar to Singapore's Malay satay in botanic gardens or satay club flavour)Drinks:1. Teh Halia - suppose to be ginger tea the Malay version but it was disappointing and was the worse dish of the lunch.2. Calamansi juice : Lime juice - very true to its original taste in Malay or indonesian restaurants.Dessert:1. Sago Pudding : This is a traditional dessert which is dying in restaurants in Singapore and Malaysia. Comparable to best I ever had - my mother's. However, unlike the Singaporean sago beads, the sago beads here were larger in size thus making it very tasty and crunchy. Best dish of my lunch. Overall the experience was very good. One of the best 'stocked' restaurant with a long list of local Singaporean delights. the taste was rich and very delicious. We will definitely return as we still have yet to try the cha toa kway ( fried turnip cake) and the mee goreng ..amongst others......The damage for lunch for 2 persons was $293 after a discount of HKD$46 due to a visa promotion...By the time we left the restaurant at 130pm there were 10 tables. Hope they will still be there for us to return..…查看更多

DECENT TASTE BUT EXPENSIVE
Grand Central Bar & Grill
2013-01-09
We wanted to bring the family out for a meal and we all decided for some pub food.We googled and decided on this Restaurant and made a reservation. It was our first visit. When we reach there about 1230 pm, the restaurant was only a third filled. The Filipino receptionist/waitress was not very interested in our reservation and using hand signals indicated to us that we could sit anywhere. ( how frivilous..)Anyway the restaurant was at the end of a row of other restaurants on the open terrace area in the Elements shopping centre. We had initially wanted outdoor dining, but it dawn upon us, that CENTRAL was the ONLY restaurant without a front terrace/ porch for outdoor dining. :(To keep up our spirits from the initial disappointment and indifferent staff / service, we made ourselves comfortable on the lower dining area of the restaurant. We ordered:a. 2 Kids meal - Mini Burgers - very mini - 3 small burgers about a half an adult fist size - decent not fantastic, with fries served on a paper pirate box. (HKD92)- Fish bites - like the fish and chips (HKD99)b. Fish and Chips - very tasty and large portion. Best dish amongst all but incredibly expensive (HKD379)c. BBQ Ribs - Tony Roma's are tastier. Too overly dripped in BBQ sauce.(HKD208)d. Pasta Chicken paninni (HKD118) - normale. Nachos with cheese - rather badly done - and the cheese was spread awefully over the Nachos. Chef probably had a 'hangover' when preparing this. (HKD 112)f. We had the lobster bisque - quite decently prepared except that the it had a bitter overlaying taste making it less palatable for us. the soup was offerred in 2 sizes, we took the bowl and shared this through 4 bowls.(HKD99)We also had some drinks which taste from weird to decent.Mojita (HKD78) + Rasbery Mojitas (HKD78)+ Gunner (cocktail) (HKD36)+ coke(HKD38) Because we were not overwhelmed with the food, we took 'conservative' desserts of chocolate cake (HKD79), ice cream. Nothing unusual - good and creamy just like Dreyers...maybe it is..hahahaha.On the whole, service was lacking and need major improvements. We could not even get the staff attention when the whole ground floor of the restaurant is barely 400 -500 sq ft.Food was not fantastic but then its not too bad either.Overall damage is HKD1,707 ( incl tax) for our family of 4 children and ourselves. We don't think we will return. …查看更多

GREAT MEAL
白鮨
2013-01-09
We were shopping at Hysan during Christmas day lunch and decided to try this with my wife and daughter. The place was next to the French restaurant Le Salon..and it has a Sushi Bar as well as table sitting. We chose to sit comfortably at a table. Very comfortable cushioned seats. No waiting time with two third of the restaurant filled at 1245pm.We had an earlier visit where we only tried the Sushi and the Sashimi which were very fresh and greatly refreshing. This time we ordered the set meals. They have a list of 15 meals set from sushi, sashimi to box lunches. It was a Ramsay nightmare but the variety of dishes would satisfy a large group with diverse palatable needs and 'lust'.Anyway we ordered :a. Skewered yakitori chicken wings - a pair for HKD38 - beautifully 'yakitorised', tastefully seasoned.b. Box lunch - half size ramen + tempura prawns + soup + grilled beef for HKD 128 - another wanderful bento set.c. Box lunch - half size ramen + soy sauce chicken + prawn tempura - for HKD 128 - delicious!!!!d. Sushi set for HKD208..very refreshing and fresh ingredientse. Some skewered minced chicken balls - fabulously tasty and crunchly juicy. The only disappointment was the accompanying soy sauce chicken in one of the Bento set which sauce was too sticky.Overall assessment - 8/10Damage was $710 HKD for 3 sets + ala carte skewers. Yes - we will be back again. The taste is still in my mouth as I write this.…查看更多

REALLY GOOD
品潮軒菜館

The English name for this is actually BAN CHU HIN RESTAURANT as printed in the visa chit I signed. We just shifted into the Prince Ritz along the Lung Kong Road and after the shifting, my wife and I decided to try this restaurant for lunch. Being from Bangkok and Singapore with lots of Chiu Chow or rather Teochew food, we really craved for the same food here in Hong Kong. We ordered the following ig stomach soup - HKD$88We had been craving for this authentic Teochew/Fukien dish for a long time. This dish came fully hot but not as specy as some versions. We love the aroma. The soup was clear and the pig stomach pieces were throughly cleaned for consumption. Good work. the taste was good, slaty and packs a 'punch' into our stomachs. overall very good and traditional.Pomfret fish porridge: - HKD$58This dish was heavenly. Like Teochew porridge in Bangkok ( called Kao Thom), the fish slices were soft but crunchy and there were many slices for a HKD$58 bowl. The porridge was soupy and the taste of the soup was well balanced with flavours of the fish and the dried fish that came with it. very aromatic and tasty. We shared this and had slightly more than 2 small bowls each Dried / Salty Turnip with mince pork - HKD$48This was one of my favourite traditional childhood dish. Back in Singapore, it goes best with porridge. The texture of the dish was a blend of salty turnip but sweet because of the fried tofu and the minced pork mixed and fried together. For this dish, this restaurant does it with some gravy and moist and thus not as dry as some versions I had tasted. It was another lovely dish ...The serving was small but enough to satisfy us.Braised Goose fillet with Tofu - HKD$98This is a 'must try' at all chiu chow/ Teochew eatery to decide whether it is really authentic Chiu chow / Teochew. the goose here was rather dry for my liking. nonetheless it was acceptably sweet and tasty. The tofu was of a better texture and lovely braised. Enough gravy for the dish to pass our palate. The overall lunch experience was good and the food was lovely. :)Damage was HKD$354 with the tea and service charges. We will return...:):)…查看更多

DELIGHTFUL SATURDAY LUNCH
和歌山
2012-10-04
We stopped by after visiting the Apple store in IFC.We had ate here many years ago but this time we brought our son and daughter along with us for lunch. We had no difficulty getting a seat as it was a weekend. For weekdays I had noticedlong queues due to the offices lunch hours in IFC. We ordered :a. 2 portions of Ramen. - Char siew pork base + miso basedb. Salmon sushi - 2 portionsc. Maguro Sushi d. Fried tofu - a house speciale. Tempura Prawns/Ebif. Karaga chicken - fried chicken As noted the Ramen portions were huge. We shared the Ramen. The ramen as compared with other places have a very rich, very strong, absorbing and tasty broth. The serving for the Broth and noodles are very generous. It was delicious. The sushi items were rather expensive with 4 pieces of Salmon at HKD$90. However the Salmon cuts were thick, juicy andvery fresh and definitely worth the extra cost.We were surpised that through a Hangseng card promotion we had a complimentary House - fried tofu. The tofu was soft, moisturised and melted with every bite. But the portions were again large with 6 huge pieces. As it is - more than a mouthful is a waste.... :)Overall, we had a deliciously fulfilling lunch...to fit into our afternoon siesta....at a total damage of HKD$535Yes we will go again..on a weekend where there will be less crowd... :)…查看更多

NICEST CUT SASHIMI
津屋爐端燒
2012-10-04
Wanted to write about this restaurant for long time. It was a Friday when my wife and I decided to try some nice Yakitori. We decided on this restaurant as it was near to our house.Unexpectedly, on that Friday evening, the restaurant was not full and we managed to get a 2 seater table immediately. Later, we were informed that perhaps the emptiness was because of the current Japanese and Chinese Spat over the diaoyu islands. Hehehe...good time to try Japanese restaurants..no business of ours,.......we are Singaporeans.. :) :)In any case it was a very cosy and small restaurant, just like the small family operated sushi joints in Japan. We had wanted to try yakitori as we had found that there were very few Yakitori joints in Hong Kong. We were impressed by the variety on the menu. It had yakitori, Sashimi and Sushi with some limited tempura dishes. To make things simpler for English educated foreigners, the Menu has in English and mandarin and there was also a pictorial menu. From the Yakitori list we ordered the delicacies - chicken kidneys and gizzards. Quite rare for a place in the suburbs to serve such items. The meat items for yakitori also featured foi gra as well as lamb chops and black pork. We ordered the black pork grilled. We had wanted to remain focused on the Yakitori but were pleasantly distracted by the Sashimi Menu. On recommendation, we ordered a freshly flown japanese fish to be cut as Sashimi together with a portion of Salmon and shell Scallops. We kept our fingers crossed whilst we drank hot sake and ate grilled puffer fish whilst waiting for the food which soon arrived in 10-15mins.Rather disappointed with the puffer fish which was the dryer version. Still too dry to tantalise me.But when the Yakitori came,.....it was a heavenly experience. The gizzards were very crunchy, deliciously moist and tastefully barbequed to the right tone. It was very good. The kidneys were disppointing as they were rather hard and tough. The other grilled yakitori we ordered , the black pork and the chicken wing were just as delightfully grilled and sumptiously delicious.Next came the Sashimi on a ice plate/ bowl. The presentation was good but the food better..it was out of this world. They were the freshest cut Sashimi I have tasted for some time. The Salmon was cut thick about 0.5cm or more. Fresh and succulent. The Scallops.... were they sweet and tasteful. The fish. Wow.......its was the best dish of the evening. It meat were so fresh, sweet and crunchy ... as if the fish had just been caught...but without the bloody details..:)Overall, the experience was very good. Out total 'damage' was HKD$835 inclusive of the 2 large hot sakes orders (HKD$180 for both). The best dish the fish alone cost us HKD$180.Because the restauarant was 20% occupied, we were given first class service and attention. On closer observation, the open kitchen / bar was operated by a senior middle age Sashimi chef, a separate younger yakitori chef and a support junior chef for the tempura and fried items. The bar counter look especially inviting, cool and yet cosy. Perhaps we will try sitting at the bar the next time to be closer to our cold cuts...:)…查看更多

GOOD FRESH SEAFOOD

My dad was visiting from overseas so my wife and I decided to try some seafood.Prefering to treat him to a nicer and cleaner place we decided on this restaurant near our house. The decor was very localised and older as in the early 70s style chinese restaurants. We tried the set for 2 at HKD$358 + 3 large bottles of St Miguel Beers. The set was very good value as it had : a. Steam chingyi fishb. Soya sauce steam scallop - with shell c. House Vegetablesd. Traditional Shark fins with crab meat We added a bowl of shark fins/crab meat for additional HKD$68 + ordered an additional dish called the steam prawns in glutinous rice..Boy!! all the dishes were literally - 'out of this world' effect. All dishes retained the traditional Cantonese steaming style which was very rich in taste, totally fresh and very home cooked. Best was the shark fins .. very traditional and bountiful in taste, with lumps of sharkfins although the portions pf crab meat was rather stingy . Next was the steam fish which was worth every bit of cooking, with soya sauce aroma penetrated every bite of the soft and bouncy fish flesh....the fish did not die in vain but rather in glorious cooking.............hehehe..:)The scallop were steamed to perfection ...well blended and interwoven with the rice noodle and splashed with appropriately garnished garlic...The ala carte - fresh prawn in glutinuous rice was unexpectedly small in portion. It was still very tasty, athough the glutinous rice was albeit salty. The prawns were very fresh although in my greed, I had felt that there could have been more prawns or bigger prawns... :)Anyway the portions were more than sufficient and we ate a very fulfilled dinner. The dessert as usual was on the house..it was black glutinous rice in red bean paste. Back in Singapore, it would have been malay style with coconut milk being added. But in this traditional Cantonese style, it was without the coconut milk and it was delicious except that I felt, it was not sufficiently thick and was more liquid. Lastly, I was offerred my total bill of the note at HKD$538…查看更多

Good modern Indonsian
印尼餐廳1968

I had wanted to try this restauarant for some time and as I was on my way to the Queens Road PCCW shop, I decided to stop by. We had no difficulty getting a table as it was 1215pm. We were surprised by the menu which featured very common and favourite Malay or Indonesian dishes such as nasi lemak ( coconut rice with condiments ) + soto ayam ( chicken clear soup), mee goreng/bakmi goreng ( fried noodles) + curry chicken +nasi goreng ( Indonesian fried rice )...We ordered nasi lemak and mee goreng. The nasi lemak was very well presented in a long plate with beef rendang + peanuts / fried small fish - ikan bilis + fried chicken. The rice was supposedly coconut rice but it taste more like chicken rice. It was disappointing to traditionist like us but palatable. The mee goreng was also well presented in a long plate. But the noodles used was maggie noodles instead of the (Indian style yellow noodle). The taste was not the traditional style but rather modern for my liking. The drinks we ordered was lime soda which was the most authentic and traditional version that came with lime seeds...attached :)All in all, it was nonetheless a wonderful experience to have eaten Indonesian. The taste was a new taste but palatable.Lastly, we noted that the atmosphere was rather odd. It had rustic wooden furnitures more akin to a western fish n chip joint rather then Indonesian restaurant. But then again, the lighting was beautiful..and who cares ..we are in a globalised world..and modern Indonesian is here to stay...:)…查看更多
