Good food, shame about the service
Showcase by Bread n Butter
2015-11-22
Decided to try this place as part of Dining City's "Brunch Weekend" - it seemed like a great deal (4 course meal for $298 per person). The food was great. We had a self serve salad bar (fresh ingredients, great Caesar dressing!)followed by a tasty tomato soup. The mains were delicious - pan fried salmon cooked perfectly with asparagus and mash potatos. And a spaghetti carbonara with the right amount of bacon and more egg than cream... As authentic as I've ever had in Hong Kong. Dessert was a chocolate and banana crepe which I could have had 5 of! Not too sweet, perfect amount of chocolate. It was an amazing deal, but staff didn't seem to care or want to be there. From the moment we walked in, everything seemed like too much trouble. If they sort out the front of house staff, I think this place could be a brunch winner. …查看更多

OM NOM NOM!
NOM – Not Only Meatballs
2014-12-08
Had a wonderful evening at NOM celebrating a friend's birthday. The atmosphere there is excellent - very lively and noisy (in a good way). Service is attentive without being overbearing and our waiter was very helpful. We started with the Hokkaido scallops with pancetta, cauliflower and black ink - they were cooked perfectly and you could taste all the individual components. And the Burrata starter was also tasty - the cheese was very creamy and worked (suprisingly) well with the watermelon. For mains, we had:Homemade parppadelle with wild boar ragout - the pasta was excellent, and the meat came in fairly big chunks so you really get a good taste of it. Chargrilled Italian Octopus - also delicious, but it could have been a bigger portion!Slow-cooked NZ lamb with smoked eggplant and black truffle - perfectly pink in the middle and tender. For dessert, we shared a platter of 3 cheese selections - the honey and fruit & nut accompainment was delicious, especially with the shropshire blue cheese. And the oven-baked ricotta was also a winner.NOM sits quite well as an in-between Italian feast - not over-the-top fine dining, but not your casual pizza joint either. Between 4 of us, the bill came to $3500 (but this included a bottle of champagne and bottle of chianti).Great night out. …查看更多

Lovely dining experience
Petite Oyster
2014-04-04
I was lucky enough to be surprised with a trip to Petite Oyster on my birthday and had such a great night. The space is kept simple and while it's small, it doesn't feel cramped.Staff are great - they were right there when you needed them, were quick to refill glasses and clear tables, but it never felt like they were hovering too close. They were helpful in suggesting oysters that were in season too, which helps when you're a bit of an amateur. There was a good selection of wine that nicely complimented the menu.We ordered a selection of oysters, prawns and mussels to start - beautifully presented and incredibly fresh. The starter of smoked salmon was kept interesting with olives and a great mix of herbs. For mains, we had the beef tenderloin and pork loin. Both were cooked perfectly - the meat was juicy and tender and packed a lot of flavour. There was really no need for mustard or any other condiment. Both were served with chunky chips and roasted garlic. The garlic, as simple as it is, was a perfect companion to the dish. For dessert, we shared the chocolate fondant - gooey inside and rich without being overly sweet. The only disappointment was that they had run out of a few items on the night - including the crab crepe, but given how much we enjoyed the meal and overall experience, I guess it's an excuse to go back to try out the rest.…查看更多

No pork shortage here!
The Salted Pig
2012-11-19
Decided to try The Salted Pig as part of the Festival of Restaurants. They had a set dinner menu which looked pretty tempting. The restaurant space is huge by Hong Kong standards. It was busy and loud, but when I looked around, there were still plenty of available tables. The wait staff were very friendly - attentive but not overbearing, and I was impressed at how the courses were paced. Our starter was Japanese scallops with chorizo and potato and red pepper mash. There were 3 decent-sized scallops and they were perfectly cooked. I wish there'd been a few more on the plate! The chorizo didn't overpower the scallops either. Each bite was a great combination of flavours and textures. The main was Spanish pork belly with roasted vegetables, for 2 people to share. There was a mustard sauce on the side, but it really wasn't needed. The pork had so much flavour and melted in your mouth. There were 5 large pieces and there was nearly a fight for the last piece. For dessert, we had a pistachio mousse and a chocolate orange tart. Both were delicious, but I was still relishing the pork belly! We also had a pitcher of The Salted Pig draught, so by the end of it all, I definitely felt like a pig.The regular menu also looked really promising. While pork is obviously the star, there are some other interesting options, including a fish & prawn pie and vegie options.I liked the feel of the restaurant and found the service excellent. Add that to a hearty, satisfying meal, and you have a winner.Definitely going back for more.…查看更多

Decent lunch set
Nahm, Vietnamese & Thai
2012-11-07
I've been to Nahm on a few occasions for lunch, mostly because they have enough on the menu to please most people.I'd recommend booking if you're planning to go in the lunch rush as it gets busy. The decor is comfortable and the service is pleasant enough, if not a tad slow. The Set Lunches available are a pretty good deal, including ones designed for 2 people (around $130), or the Noodle Set which is $88 for a salad and then a rice or noodle main. Some of my preferred dishes are:* Vietnamese shredded chicken salad - tiny hint of chilli, I find it quite refreshing.* Roast duck salad with sesame sauce - well cooked and great flavours.* Spicy beef salad with mint and lime - classic, nothing extraordinary but tasty nonetheless.* Vegetable laksa - could be a bit spicier, but love the overall flavours.* Thai chicken rice - looks a lot like hainese chicken rice, but not quite as tasty.* Spicy glass noodles with seafood - decent amount of seafood and could quite easily go for 2 bowls.Personally I think it's more of a Chinese take on Thai / Vietnamese, but it's still a fairly decent meal and relatively inexpensive compared to other restaurants in Elements. My only suggestion is that the waitstaff and kitchen try to coordinate service of food a bit better. On each occasion I've been, at least 1 person at our table has had both courses brought out at the same time and therefore getting cold, while 1 person will have to wait ages for even their first dish. …查看更多

Special Ocassion Hotdogs!
BRAT
2012-08-21
I purchased a ValuUp voucher for BRAT a while back and thought a Saturday night before football kicked off, was the perfect night to use it.When I walked in, I wondered whether a reservation was really necessary as it was completely empty, but within 5 minutes of being seated, every table except one, was taken. The selection of hotdogs is pretty good, with a bit of something for everyone. The ones that caught my attention included the Bourbon (pork and beef with kentucky bourbon, garlic and spices), Chorizo (chicken and turkey with Chorizo and garlic), and the very cheesy Gruyere, but we ultimately settled on:* Chipotle - Pork with chipotle chili, cheddar and paprika* Sun Dried Tomatoes Mozzarella (chicken and turkey with sun dried tomatoes, mozzarella and basil)You can choose from their signature bun or dark rye, along with a whole host of condiments (caramelized onions, jalapeno, cheddar, mushrooms etc) and mustards (classic, dijon, honey, truffle). The signature bun was warm and soft - perfect companion to the hotdog. And the condiments were tasty without being overpowering for the hotdog. The fries were pretty good - proper thin cut and tastier than what you'd get from McD's! Which is a good thing given that you're paying more here than any regular fast food joint. But the star of the show is ultimately the sausage itself. Both the ones we tried were delicious - very juicy (as evidenced by the amount of mess I made!), packed full of flavour. The chipotle had the perfect amount of heat and you could taste every single ingredient in the sun dried tomato one. They didn't look that big when put in front of me, but I was well and truly full at the end of it. They are very more-ish. I only wish I had enough room in my belly to try another one. Service was very friendly and efficient and the overall vibe and decor made it a very comfortable, cosy experience. This is not a replacement for the old hotdog place on Cochrane Street - I think it stands on it's own as a casual restaurant that serves good quality sausages. …查看更多

Classic food, excellent service
Jimmy's Kitchen
2012-07-16
Took advantage of the Hong Kong Restaurant Week deal to make another trip to Jimmy's Kitchen and wasn't disappointed.I love the feel of this place - the old photos on the walls, the dark interior and comfortable seats. It has an old homey feeling to it. Staff are very attentive and some look as though they have worked there for decades which just adds to the charm of the place. There was a set dinner menu as part of Restaurant Week with at least 3 or 4 options for each course. We opted for:* Rainbow Trout with honey mustard dressing - fish was fresh and the dressing gave it a bit of kick. Loved the flavour combination* Mini Cottage Pie - classic dish which was more meat and less potato. I could have had about 5 servings of this!Main* Grilled Lamb with potatoes and beetroot - the lamb was perfectly cooked with the perfect amount of fat! I can't remember the last time I was served beetroot with my main meat dish, but it was great with the lamb. It balanced the saltiness of the meat really well. * Soft Bread Pudding with raspberry jam and meringue - this was cavity-inducing sweetness. The first mouthful was great, but it was difficult to have more bites. It could have done without either the jam or the meringue, but both combined was a bit too much sugar for me.* Strawberry Custard Tart - simple and classic. The crust was really good and the custard sweet enough without overpowering the fresh strawberries.Comfort food done well, great atmosphere and excellent service. All round good experience.…查看更多

Nice surprise!
Thaima V2
2012-06-29
I've walked past a few times and found the all white exterior / interior a bit uncomfortable, but decided to pop in to Thaima V2 for a quick bite before drinks one night and was very pleasantly surprised.Firstly, the service is great - warm greeting, lots of smiles, drinks come out quickly. Secondly, there's a lot more on the menu than I would have guessed for such a small place. It's mostly Thai, with some Vietnamese and even Indonesian-inspired dishes.Decided on all seafood on this occasionrawn Sashimi - very fresh, served with an amazing spicy / tangy sauce. Oysters - they have a few to choose from but I couldn't go past the Australian Coffin Bays. Good sized and again very fresh. It didn't need anything more than a couple of drops of lemon jiuce.Deep fried soft shell crab - snack sized portion, very crisp, lots of flavour.Price was reasonable given it was fresh seafood, and its Soho location. Around $200/head including wine. I would definitely want to go back to try more of the food. They also have a set dinner for two for $298, which looked rather interesting.…查看更多

Fish pie to die for!
Harrington's
2012-06-18
My boyfriend and I were craving good old-fashioned British pub grub on a rainy Sunday afternoon, so decided to check out Harrington's for a late lunch / early dinner. We opted to sit in the dining area (the bar area is distinctly separate, but still a really comfortable space to eat and/or drink). The dining area has a Wagyu feel to it, and definitely much nicer than any ordinary pub. The menu is extensive - With choices like Roast Patridge wrapoped in bacon with cider gravy, Rabbit ragout pappardelle and sage roasted pork belly - it took us a really long time to decide what we wanted. In the end, we went for:Steak & Guinness pie - comes with mushy peas, very tasty. The gravy is really rich and the meat was so tender.Fisherman's pie - delicious!!! Everything from the parmesan crusted mash, to the generous chunks of salmon, scallops and prawns... this dish was a winner. I could have had 2. Cauliflower mash - good texture and well seasoned. Bannoffie Sundae - we really didn't need dessert but couldn't help it. It looks a bit of a mess when it comes out, but it tastes incredible. Major sugar rush moment. All in all, it was a great experience. The service is good - attentive and friendly but not overbearing, and the food is great. Definitely worth going back and trying more of the menu.Fantastic spot for a lazy weekend lunch or dinner. HK$570 between 2, including a couple of drinks.…查看更多

Enjoyable casual dinner!
嵐川日本串燒
2012-05-14
I live across the street and whenever I walked past, there was always a delicious smell drifting from this place, so finally, I ventured in to try it out.It was a Sunday night, nearly 9pm and we hadn't booked. It was busy, but they were really polite and got us seated very quickly. The variety of the menu is probably not as big compared with other yakitori places I've tried, but most of the favourites are there. We ordereduck breast & long onion - the duck was cooked really well. It was the perfect mix of lean and a bit of fat! Very moist, and great flavours.Asparagus wrapped with pork - this was delicious. The pork was surprisingly subtle and the star was the asparagus. Very fresh.Mince chicken meatballs - our first preference for a chicken dish was the chicken neck, but they had sold out. This was ok - good flavours, but nothing too special.Cooked Eel - very fresh and again cooked really well so that there was a good char-grilled taste, but not so overpowering that it loses its unique eel flavour.Beef steak - cooked perfectly to medium rare and incredibly tender. Melt-in-your-mouth goodness.Grilled tofu - exactly the way I like it, crispy on the outside, scalding hot and soft on the inside. They provide a side dish of sauce/paste for extra seasoning, but we didn't really need it. The flavours are pretty strong on their own and adding this seemed to make things too salty. Total for 2 people around $370 including a large bottle of Asahi. It's a comfortable restaurant with helpful staff. I'd recommend for a quick or casual meal between friends/family.I'll definitely go back again.…查看更多

Great Service, Great Food
Yardbird
2012-02-15
Tuesday night, 8:30pm - we knew it'd be unlikely we would get a table straight away, so were not too disappointed when told it would probably take an hour. We left our name and number and headed off down the road for cocktails. It was definitely worth the wait! It's a small, busy, loud space, but it all works. The service was impeccable - friendly, very knowledgable about their menu, quick without rushing you. Between 2 of us, we ordered:EndamameSweet Corn Tempura Korean Fried CauliflowerPork BellyChicken Livers, Thigh and Meatballsand the Cherry Shrimp dish. All of it was delicious, but I loved the sweet corn tempura, pork belly and meatballs! I could definitely have had extra orders!Unfortunately they had run out of the oyster & neck, which I really wanted to try, so I guess I'll just have to go back.It came to around HK$350 per person, including a couple of beers, which I thought was good for the evening that we had. The quality of food and service was greatly appreciated!…查看更多

Great brunch
Aura Lounge
2012-02-10
I'd been to Aura for drinks before and had a good time, so when ValuUp ofered a promotion at Aura, I jumped at the chance to check out their brunch. (We were able to pick 1 main from the brunch menu and have 2 hours of free flow bubbly for $140 so it was a great deal!)There is a pretty good selection to choose from including:Steak & EggsChorizo Scrambled EggsPulled Pork SandwichEggs BenedictRicotta & Berry PancakesCaesar SaladAnd a few more a can't remember! We ordered the steak & eggs, and pulled pork sandwich. Service was quick, but not in a rushed way. Steak was cooked exactly right - medium rare as requested. The pulled pork sandwich was delicious. It had a char siew flavour to it and was so tender. We ended up staying well after our 2 hours of free flow bubbly had finished and enjoyed a great variety of cocktails and also ordered some hash browns as a late snack! All in all, it was a great day. Friendly and efficient service, good food, and excellent drinks. …查看更多

Bar 42

Now known as Bar 42, this place is definitely more bar than cafe, BUT....They do the BEST chicken wings you're ever likely to eat. Perfectly crispy, spicy and delicious. Add to that, excellent service and good conversation (you can turn up on your own and you're bound to meet a few new friends).…查看更多

Great Atmosphere and Good Aussie Pub Grub
Coast Bistro and Bar
2012-01-17
Have had dinner at Coast quite a few times - best thing is that you can choose to have a proper sit-down meal (away from the sports on tv and the crowded bar) or you can choose to have your meal amongst all the action around the bar. It's always a great atmosphere (especially when the rugby is on) and the service is fantastic.Recommended:* Wagyu pizza* Kangaroo pizza* Any of their side dishes (I wish they would bring back the sweet potato mash though!)* Kangaroo or chicken pie* Any of their tasting plattersI don't think Coast tries to be something it's not - it's a good Aussie pub with decent food. If you want fine dining, you're better off going somewhere else. Sunday afternoons, cold cider, pizza and some live music. Bliss.…查看更多

Great Italian comfort food
Linguini Fini
2011-11-05
Chose Linguini Fini for a work dinner and because there were 6 of us, we could book a table, hence no wait time. And I'm glad, because by 8pm, the whole place was packed - and this was a Monday night! The environment and decor is very casual and feels very homey. There are way too many pretentious restaurants in Hong Kong so it was nice to find a place that is genuinely laidback and comfortable. We had some flatbreads to share - rosemary, sea salt & garlic, and cherry tomatoes & mozzarella. Both were delicious. We also tried the caprese - the homemade mozzarella is to die for. SO good. For mains, we all inevitably chose pasta. The portions look small when they arrive, but are very filling. I had the linguini with clams which I thought was perfectly balanced and rich in flavour. The other choices -"On Top of Spaghetti" (giant meatball & spaghetti)"fazzoletti nose to tail bolo" (veal and oxtail ragu)Roasted Garlic LinuiniSalt Cured Egg infused linguini (I didn't try this one, but am told it was delicious if you like the Chinese salted egg flavour!)Vegetable TortelliniAll of the dishes tasted great, and the pasta was perfectly made and cooked. For dessert, we tried some interesting flavoured gelato, including "cinnamon & camomile" and "strawberry & Basil"! Refreshing! The service was excellent and we had a fantastic night. We thought it was pretty good value for money too (There is no service charge). The total bill was around HK$2100 for 6 of us and included wine as well. I'll definitely be back.…查看更多
