Royal Thai Restaurant serves yummy mango dessert
南亭泰國菜
2011-10-29
I came here with colleagues for lunch. It's nice to have a Thai restaurant in the vicinity and they make a great sticky rice and mango dessert. In fact, this was what we wanted as the main part of our meal.We ordered an appetiser platter to share. It was served hot with three different sauces. The platter consisted of crab cakes, chicken wrapped in leaves, spring rolls and what I think was fish cakes. The crab cakes were deliciously fried and went well with the chilli sauce. The spring rolls were a little dry but tasted fine. The fish cake was the least tasty in my opinion. I thought they were slightly greasy and didn't really have any particular flavour. The chicken was succulent and well seasoned. I just wish the portion had been bigger. The dessert was just what I expected. Fresh mango which was neither too sweet nor sour. I liked the sticky white rice better than the purple one, which was a little al dente. Personally, I prefer my rice well cooked. The coconut milk went well with the rice and the mango to make this a satisfying and filling dessert. In fact, we were completely stuffed afterwards.I'd definitely go back to this restaurant. It was my third visit and I've loved everything I tried so far, but their sticky rice and mango dessert is hands down my favourite dish.…查看更多

Very Good Seafood Restaurant is okay for dim sum
頂好海鮮酒家
2011-10-24
Very Good Seafood Restaurant has sentimental value because I often went there as a child. I returned there for brunch yesterday to see if it was as I remembered it.The interesting thing about this restaurant is that they serve you century eggs and ginger as you are waiting for your food. Not the best I've had but okay in quality. The egg yolk was notably gooey. The first dish to come was Chiu Chow-style dumplings. I normally like these, but the ones served at this restaurant were rather dry. I've definitely had better elsewhere.Next were the BBQ pork buns. These came steaming hot and were tasty. I especially liked the flavour of the seasoned meat inside the bun. Then came another dish that I love: steamed beef balls. They tasted fine, but again, I've had better. I did enjoy the crunchiness of the water chestnuts although the beef balls themselves could have been more succulent.A must-have dish at any dim sum meal is siu mai. These came piping hot and tasted quite good, despite the presentation which was lacking. Somehow the siu mai didn't look as fresh as I'd expected. The steamed pork ribs weren't exactly what I'd hoped for. I couldn't taste enough of the black bean sauce, for one. Also, the pumpkins that were overpowered the taste of everything else. The deep-fried bean curd dish was one of the best of the entire meal. I liked the fact that the special salt it was covered in wasn't too strong. It was seasoned just perfectly. The last dish to arrive was har gao. There was something crunchy inside it, which I don't think is found in the average har gao. I can't say I cared for it. I would have preferred no crunch and just the soft shrimp meat.Overall, I feel that Very Good Seafood Restaurant was better in my memory when I was a child. It's an okay restaurant if you just want to have a quick dim sum meal in a convenient part of Tsim Sha Tsui. However, the pickier diners may prefer a higher quality dim sum restaurant.…查看更多

Xi Yan treats diners with chocolate dessert
囍宴 甜‧艺
2011-10-20
I went to Xi Yan with my boyfriend for dessert. This was our second visit to Xi Yan. We enjoyed our first visit, and left satisfied this time as well.I tried the Rocker Chocolate Ice Cream, number 88 on the menu. It was only when my boyfriend mentioned that Rocker must stand for Ferrero Rocher that I realised the sauce on the ice cream was made from the chocolate of the same name.My dessert came garnished with a slice of candied orange. Dried fruit lovers may enjoy this, but I found it too sweet for my liking. Also, I didn't particularly like the chewiness of the fruit in combination with the rich and smooth ice cream. However, I couldn't really taste the chocolate ice cream as the Ferrero Rocher sauce overpowered it. Not that I minded. When I ate the ice cream together with the sauce, it really was just like eating the Ferrero Rocher chocolate, only creamier and colder. The only chocolate dessert on the menu, Rocker Chocolate Ice Cream is a must-try for fans of Ferrero Rocher.…查看更多

Habitat Japanese Restaurant is a pleasant surprise
柊亭料理
2011-10-16
I bought a Groupon deal for two to enjoy a 10-course set dinner and ate at the restaurant with my boyfriend. The surroundings of the restaurant are clean and modern, but the tables are placed very close together. Not that it was a problem since we knew this wasn't a fine dining restaurant. The waiters and waitresses were very attentive and efficient. As we were waiting for our food, we noticed that the bigger tables would be quite nice for group gatherings. The first course to come was the organic tomato salad. As my boyfriend observed, it was served very cold. Refreshing and delicious. The second course was Japanese beans. I've never been a fan of these, and I was not swayed this time either. The third course, hand-rolled onion toro, was one of the highlights of the meal. The seaweed was crisp, the onion toro tasted great and there was a mound of wasabi for me to enjoy it with. The fourth course was the sea urchin sashimi. The previous times I tried sea urchin, I disliked it. However, I enjoyed the sea urchin sashimi served at Habitat. Perhaps I'm acquiring a taste for it.The fifth course was a hotpot with Norwegian wild salmon head. The meat on the fish tasted pretty good, and there was nothing wrong with the hotpot. It just didn't really strike us as Japanese. With the spicy cabbage making up the bulk of the hotpot, it really seemed more like Korean kimchi hotpot. The sixth course, Japanese-style seafood fried rice, was alright. I liked the fact that it wasn't greasy, but by then, I was getting full so I didn't finish it.The seventh course was fresh burdock miso soup, which tasted okay. The eighth course was spicy Japanese cheese tonikokoman. Very similar to okonomiyaki, which I don't like at all. But the tonikokoman wasn't drenched in sauce the way okonomiyaki tends to be, and it was a pleasant surprise. The cheese tasted especially good. The ninth course, grilled minced chicken skewer, was another highlight. Being a fan of chicken cartilage, I enjoyed the chewy bits in the skewer immensely. We didn't eat the tenth course, ice cream, as we were full after nine courses.Would I go back to Habitat? I'd definitely consider it if I'm in the neighbourhood.…查看更多

Ho To Tai noodles are nothing out of the ordinary
好到底麵家
2011-10-16
After hearing about Ho To Tai's famous handmade noodles, I tried their beef brisket noodles and wontons. The food took much longer to arrive than I expected. This gave me ample time to observe the surroundings. The place was packed full of hungry customers, which is a good sign for a restaurant. I found it a bit too cramped for my liking though, and had difficulty eating without elbowing other diners. For a noodle shop of this calibre, I found the waitress pleasant and helpful. She was patient with me as I placed my order in my rather limited Cantonese. The beef brisket noodles were a disappointment at first sight. Having tried this dish in many other restaurants, I found the portion of beef brisket rather skimpy for its price. As for the taste, it was nothing out of the ordinary. I didn't finish my noodles as they didn't taste as good cold, and they sure got cold quickly due to the cold air conditioning in the restaurant. The wontons tasted fine, but again, I wasn't blown away by them. Not sure if the place lives up to the hype. The food I tried was average and portions weren't big enough to get me full. I guess it's worth trying this place if you're a fan of local noodles.…查看更多
