Cuter than pie
Babycakes
2010-06-01
Cuter than pie, that's their tagline. The place is definitely cute, with bite-sized cupcakes, a half-sized door opening for kids, and even a kiddie-sized toilet in the bathroom. I decided to try their strawberry and red velvet baby cakes ($25 for 2) which were good. Servers were also nice. The place caters to families with children, and has a play area for kids, so it could get noisy with screaming kids. …查看更多

Fooled by the Michelin rating
全記海鮮菜館
2010-06-01
I had friends in town so we decided to go to Saikung for seafood. With no restaurant in mind, we were hassled by all the aggressive waiters along the promenade so we settled on Chuen Kee because it was advertised as Michelin-rated. We went with the 4-person set menu for $600 total (no service fee) which allowed us to choose 5 seafood dishes from a bigger list. We chose the sweet shrimp, mantis shrimp, abalone, cheese lobster noodles, crab, and morning glory stir fried with shrimp paste. While the sweet shrimps were small, they were fresh and delicious. The mantis shrimp were also large and savory. Aside from the shrimps, the other seafood we chose were underwhelming, esp. the crab. The crab was too small, and the very little meat it had was mushy. The abalone was overcooked. The lobster was good, but the cheese was actually a cheap cream sauce. …查看更多

Full cup is a local cafe with no English menus. I'm lucky that my local friends brought me here and were able to translate the menu for me. Upon entering, they will ask you if you smoke as there are different floors - one for non smokers, and one with an indoor area for nonsmokers and an outdoor deck for smokers. Decorated with mismatched furniture and kitschy knickknacks, Full Cup is a laid-back place to chill with friends over coffee, chocolate, or tea. I don't think they serve alcohol. I love their banana hot chocolate. Their drinks with coffee jelly and coffee beans are good, too. They also serve food. I've had the duck pizza before but, for the small portion, it took 40 minutes to make and be served. Servers are very nice. The first time I went there, my friend accidentally tipped over another friend's drink, and the servers promptly remade the drink for us without us asking. …查看更多

Best banh mi I've tried in HK
Delicieux Bistro
2010-06-01
I'm happy to finally find tasty banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich) in Hong Kong! The first time I attempted to try Delicieux was in the evening, but they changed their hours to close earlier at 7p so I was out of luck. I went back for lunch on a Saturday and snagged a table in their cozy but small cafe. I grew up eating banh mi with cha (pork roll), ham, and pate, so I was a bit disappointed at first that only the No. 1 deluxe sandwich had pate (along with salted pig knuckle and meat floss). But the sandwich itself did not disappoint! The bread was fluffy and crispy (although the edges slightly burnt). The liver pate was made from scratch and was delicious. The sandwich was also filled to the brim with meat, pickled carrots and radish. The flavors were very well balanced - not too sweet or salty. I was pretty full from the whole sandwich. I think I might try the half sandwich and appetizer combo instead next time as the spring rolls and Vietnamese coffee looked good. I tried their 3-color drink this time which was average. Combo prices are very reasonable. I can't wait to return!…查看更多

No. 1 Deluxe Sandwich
good break from temple street night market stalls
Foodtrip Bedana's Filipino Restaurant
2010-03-24
My boyfriend and I stumbled upon Foodtrip as we were roaming around the side streets off of Temple Street's main drag. I haven't had Filipino food in HK at that point so we decided to try Foodtrip. Our server, Joyce, was very friendly. We ordered the chicken adobo and the beef with potatoes. The beef was very tender and flavorful. I enjoyed the beef dish over the chicken adobo which I found too sour for my taste. Joyce also recommended a few of their seafood dishes but we didn't try since my boyfriend doesn't eat seafood. I've also been back a second time to try their Filipino seafood congee which I agree tastes better than a lot of the Cantonese congee places around HK. The place is small and gets packed at night so if you have a big group, you should call them beforehand. They can set up more tables and chairs for your group. I believe they're only open at night but they stay open pretty late.…查看更多

Mochi Cream - you are making me poor but happy!
Mochi Cream
2010-01-30
I regret not knowing about Mochi Cream when I was in Tokyo, but I had the chance to try Mochi Cream during my Hawaii trip this same time last year. When my friend told me that Mochi Cream has an outlet in SOGO, I had to go! I actually went the last two days in a row. The mochi was delicious. The first time I ever had Mochi Cream in Hawaii, I tried traditional red bean, which is my favorite mochi flavor, as well as sakura (cherry blossom), but I found the sakura's flavor too bland. This time in Hong Kong, honey cranberry and blueberry yogurt caught my eye so I went with those at $15 each. Since I remember the shopgirl in Hawaii telling me I needed to wait 10-15 minutes before eating them as they're flown in from Japan, I asked the SOGO shopgirl if I needed to wait. She said to wait 5 minutes. After 10 minutes, I bit into the blueberry yogurt to find that the mochi skin was still slightly frostbitten, but the filling did taste like yogurt and had tiny pieces of red bean too. It was delicious. I was feeling a bit stuffed after eating one that I waited another 20 minutes before I had the honey cranberry. By then the mochi skin was very soft and the cream inside was runny and tasted like whipped cream. The honey flavor, which also had red bean, was very strong; this one was a bit too sweet but still tasty. The next day, I couldn't get Mochi Cream out of my mind and went back again. I wanted something sweet and fruity again so I went with the raspberry mille-feuille ($17), which was a special listed on the menu but not seen in the display case. This time, the shopgirl advised me to wait 8 minutes without me asking. I ate the raspberry after 15 minutes, but it still had a little bit of ice on the mochi skin but was soft. I thought I didn't wait long enough since the mochi was crunchy but I later realized it might be the mille-feuille. I couldn't stop with one so I went back and bought the apple pie ($18). I also asked her if the mille-feuille is supposed to be crunchy, and she said yes and that the apple pie has it too. For the apple pie, I decided to follow the "how to eat" instructions in the paper bag, and took the mochi home to refridgerate before eating, but I didn't get home for another hour. When I finally ate the apple pie, it was very soft, and the cinnamon apple pie filling was oozing out. It also had crunchy bits and smooth egg custard cream from the mille-feuille. It was delicious!…查看更多

The dan dan noodles were the best, and only $18 hkd (+$10 with meat). They gave us a lot more sauce than noodles, so I ended up ordering a bowl of rice to finish the sauce. Service was also top notch. Our server kept refilling and pouring tea for us, and they did not automatically add 10% to the bill either. …查看更多

free entertainment, expensive drinks, bad service
歌柏絲意大利餐廳
2009-09-19
I like that they have free music and dancing here, but the servers are unfriendly and rude. I've seen people arrive to Grappa's and are pressured by the servers to order as they're about to start a dance lesson. I understand that the restaurant needs to make money, but management should teach its servers that they do not need to pressure customers. Also although it's a pricier restaurant, even after you've ordered food or a drink from their menu, they do not provide you with water or let you drink your own water (and a bottle of water costs $35). My last visit, I ordered a pussy foot which was marked on the menu as having a buy one get one free special. However, after they brought my drink and the bill for $53 over ($48 drink + 10% service charge), they said that I cannot get a second drink free because the bartender made me the large size rather than the small. I told my server that I wanted the small size since I was about to dance and couldn't finish the large in time. After going back and forth, he said that he'll give me a second small size, but after I finished dancing and asked for the second drink, he actually brought it over with another bill!…查看更多
