My supposedly intimate brunch with a friend ended up as a sandwich between 2 big parties plus super loud music so we had to shout to converse.I guess it was too busy, dishes cane slowly and no one bothered to explain them. The let down was the desserts. The menu said it was a dessert platter but it was actually a dessert buffet with mostly just cheap fruits and a chocolate fountain. Went for dinner and the place was full before 7pm. Very small place. We ordered the set dinner and it was of great value. All dishes from starter to dessert were all well cooked. Bread served hot! They did not have oysters that day unfortunately. Service was fast and tables were very close and the bar person spoke very loudly. We finished within an hour and felt obligated to vacate the table.Overall, I would describe the restaurant as fast food style but serving very delicious French dishes at an affordable price. Came for the British Sunday lunch with my British friends. They were not disappointed. Everything was as expectedly good. Food quality, portion size, service, ambience, value for money. Thank you Shoreditch. I can see it becoming our regular hang out place! I had the beef shin and marrow pie. The marrow was abit fatty but with a strong delightful aroma. My friends’ roast beef was apparently delicious as they ate everything! The sourdough bread was very tasty. Did not care for the mushroom butter. Not the easiest place to find. Once inside, the interior immediately relaxed me 👍. We were the first table of the day. Air con was already cool and music playing. We had to however ask them to turn down the music as it was so loud and they adjusted. The set lunch dishes we ordered were all beautifully cooked. Orange and beetroot salad was sharp and clams came with a nice sauce. Pasta dishes tasty and hot. Tofu panna cotta smooth and creamy. But the portion sizes were all very small. Ok if starters and desserts are small but main dishes should be a main dish! The amount of pasta in my view needed doubling. Service was ok for lunch. Superb food. Must try the XO sauce Cheung Fun. The spicy Cha siu was interesting but I would go back to honey glazed in the future.Food is consistently excellent at Duddell’s. Service isn’t. I ordered a bottle of champagne and instead of repeating my order or pointing on the drinks menu to confirm my ask, the waiter spoke loudly “you want the $xxxx bottle”. I had never experienced such a way to confirm my order and thought it was embarrassing. The bottle did not come with a cloth so while the first pour was ok, the refills were done with the water from the ice bucket dripping from the bottle and from the waiter’s hand. 😳 thirdly, we got prosecco glasses, not champagne glasses. I see other tables having flutes. Wonder why?That morning I actually tried to call the restaurant to make a reservation but left a voicemail. Given that there was no response I managed to find an on line booking site and made the reservation that way. Same time same name same number of guests, same contact details. Half way through dining, the receptionist called and asked if I still needed a table. I told her I was already eating inside the restaurant and she was surprised. This means the 2 systems don’t sync. We dined at the small front section of the restaurant. Looks like there is a loft but not sure from just looking up. We were surrounded by soft spoken diners so our lunch was very pleasant and not noisy. The lady who served us spoke beautiful English and provided excellent service - all by herself but one can tell she is skilled and used to be put under pressure.Food was creative - confit goose was an unusual dish ( sorry no photo!) and it was cooked perfectly and of a decent portion. The squid salad as a main course was a tad bit too small for me. We had the house Reisling with our meal and it was refreshing and generous in the pour. Overall a wonderful lunch experience. Food was of high quality overall. Loved my pork ribs as main. Would have been better if they offered a little bit of veg with it. Desserts a tag bit too sweet for us but the platter looked nice. Quantity was fine if one was not a big eater. Service was impeccable, bathroom very clean. I was disappointed that the free flow champagne option with Perrier jouet was $660 per person. Went for lunch at 1:30pm on a week day. The place was completely empty and a strong unpleasant odour welcomed us. Set lunches seemed of good value but we chose to order a la carte. Dishes were not of the quality we had hoped. Baos came tiny and the paper on the base of the baos were firmly stuck and hard to take off. The dough seemed slightly stale. The mango and tuna sushi was also poor - the rice was not Japanese and could not hold together; crumbled upon being picked up. Wasabi was from a tube, not fresh. The tacos were also poorly presented but tasted ok. The place felt really run down. A freezer was placed in the middle of the restaurant and wires hanging from ceiling and wall. Intrigued and wanted to satisfy my nostalgia, I visited the restaurant for lunch. The restaurant was nicely decorated but it did not give me any vibe related to its British-Chinese theme. Service was warm but more training needed to be honest. Attention to needs not quite there yet.Menu had some interesting dishes and some boring ones. The waiter recommended the aromatic duck with pancakes and the pork belly baos.Both were delicious. The aromatic duck was crispy as promised. The pancakes were thick but tasty. The baos had kimchee inside which added some nice flavour to the dish albeit not very British-Chinese 😅.No dessert was available that day although they were listed on the menu.At the end, we got a chocolate each with the bill. Unfortunately the chocolates were off already so they took them back and replaced with boiled sweets instead which we declined.If we knew desserts were not available, we would have ordered a third dish - finger licking lemon chicken - but the waiter did not seem too keen to endorse this dish for some reason.The table for 2 was way too small esp when a portion of it was being used to erect a divider between tables. They could only serve one dish at a time as a result. The bathroom I must commend was clean and had a pleasant fragrance. First of all, quality of service is as usual which is casual but attentive. I really enjoyed seeing the cultural diversity in their team. On this day, the restaurant was full, with lots of big parties, only divided by small and ineffective dividers on the tables to half heartedly separate them. A couple of groups had too much fun at the expense of other patrons who preferred a slightly less rowdy lunch. Now the food. A good selection of starters followed by a decent collection of sashimi and sushi. While the fish quality is not top notch, they made it up with quantity. One could eat as much as one wanted.For the main course my 2 friends and I ordered teriyaki salmon. Two out of the three were overcooked and tasted like cardboard. Seemed like they were cooked and left unserved for too long. The third one which came later than the first two tasted as it should be. We gave feedback to the server and she thanked us without further action. Based on my experience with Pirata Geoup, the manager would normally come over to enquire further but not this time. Dessert platter was fruits, matcha sponge cake and mini lemon tarts. Nothing worth writing about.Side notes - washrooms were clean, very good. No service charge automatically added to the bill and we were reminded several times about this. Maybe Pirata management should add back the 10% if tipping is an issue. Had the weekday set lunch. 2 courses + a glass of house wine. Bill came to just over HKD400. I would say overall the dishes were fine. Nothing wrong but nothing to sing from the rooftop either. Place was busy with lots of happy (ie loud) diners near me. That honestly took some of the joy away from my lunch. The wine was a small quantity in a large glass but it was pleasant. The baby gem salad was salty and of a decent portion size. Steak was good, again portion size was pretty good but to me it lacked presentation. How about a bit of chopped parsley to add some colours? Went on a Saturday to Iwate.Kin for the first time after receiving a flyer the restaurant was distributing on the street the week before. It’s a bit odd that this restaurant has no window despite being on the street level but it’s very clean and tidy inside. The waitress was a Japanese lady, very polite and attentive. The chef at the counter was likely a local HK’er but could understand Japanese it seems.My friend and I ordered a set each. Typical menu, nothing extraordinary. We ordered a whole pond fish to start and that was nicely carved and presented on a slab of ice. Fish was delicious and sweet. The tuna mini bowls set I had was good, my friend said the cod set was also good. Portion size was ok, not huge but for the price we paid I would say it was good value - good food good service good ambience. We had a bottle of sake with our meal and that was decent too.
