Better than Singapore!
2017-12-09
Perhaps as a result of catering to Hongkies’ preferences, I personally think the chicken rice and bakuteh actually surpasses even the real Singaporean Man Wah and the chicken rice in Fullerton! Rice was flavourful and wickedly moist with the fragrance of chicken aroma, roast chicken had an almost crispy skin and tender texture, and bakuteh was not overpoweringly medicinal. Yum!…

CHEEEEEEEEEEESE - a good alternative to Chesa
2015-01-15
Starting off the year with a cheesy blast, we set off to the Swiss Chalet in high spirits notwithstanding a rat sighting in the neighbourhood streets (yeah these can be shady streets haha) and the annoying traffic congestion and lack of parking space in TST. Lol - such optimism right? The Swiss Chalet has been around for many years, and while it does serve as a more economical alternative to its Peninsula hotel counterpart, I do think the Chalet has its own touch of orignality and rustic charm. It gets mentions on numerous magazines such as HK Tatler etc.Decor and ambienceThe restaurant was still dressed in the festivities, but apart from that it's a house - well obviously that's what a chalet is. But it's the rustic cottage kind of house, with earthy bricks, slightly worn leather sofa seats and just the right degree of subdued lighting. Invites imagination of the Swiss landscape once you brush aside the window curtains.FoodIt was the first day of 2015 and that was mighty cause for stuffing our faces! It was therefore an ambitious meal - Appetizer 1German White Asparagus - Plain with Tyrolienne Air-dried HamWhite asparagus was supposed to be seasonal, so we went and ordered this. It came with Hollandaise sauce too. All in all a festive and traditional dish, nothing explosively mindbogging but the asparagus was nice and fragrant.Appetizer 2Deer carpaccioThis was a nice and flavourful dish of carpaccio, different from your usual cow cow carpaccio. It has a slightly meatier tanginess to it, complemented by cheese and tomatoes.Main 1Cheese Fondue with white wine and chickenYummm - I remember exclaiming at the nice hint of white wine in the cheese fondue. Struck a nice balance and even better with the chicken. I thought the heat was a bit too much though, it reduced the fondue quickly into a lumpy mixture before we finished dipping all the veggies and chicken cubes into the glorious fondue.Main 2Swiss veal with cream sauce The veal rested on a bed of lightly crusted potatoes, perfect with the cream sauce. The veal was okay, good but not outstanding. This is supposed to  be one of their signature dishes though.DrinkDry apple cider - yumm. Refreshes your palette given the heaviness of all the above.DessertChocolate (toblerone) fondue with fruits and cake (2 person portion)Oh my it was a heavy heavy dinner. We couldn't resist ordering the chocolate fondue for dessert and as the grand finale, even though our stomachs were bursting by then. We were served generous portions of fruits to go with the chocolate fondue, and there were marshmallows as well as some cake together with the wide variety of fruits. Happy but just too stuffed! All in all a good experience food-wise.ServiceSo-so. We were seated in a small corner next to the door, and we were almost invisible to the waiters. Had to wave around and call in order to be noticed.…

Go for the safe options and dine happy
Lupa
2014-10-08
Nice place, prime location but quality of food can fluctuate. This restaurant has caught my attention quite some time ago but only now have I dared to brave the mixed reviews and sample what Lupa has to offer at lunch time.Decor and AmbienceDepending on where you sit, the ambience and the dining experience can vary quite a bit. Upon being greeted at the concierge, you are escorted along a corridor, with half-circle sofa tables on your left. If your seat is not one of those, there are quite a number of cafe tables and chairs in the main dining area. Rather clustered too. As people filled in the main dining area, the din can be quite affective if you're trying to strike a healthy conversation. There it feels like a noisy cafe or canteen. However if you were seated in the sofa tables along the corridor, as we were, the ambience is a bit classier and more private. FoodI've heard about the brunch buffet on weekends, but I didn't do my research thoroughly to investigate what they actually offer for lunch. (Or it wasn't immediately obvious from the first few pages of reviews on Openrice, no matter). For lunch on weekdays, most people would probably go for the lunch buffet which includes some selection of starters, salads, soup and dessert, plus a limited selection of pasta/pizza/mains with additional charge of up to $90. The basic lunch buffet was $188 or so, FYI.If you were more particular about food or can't be bothered to share the lunch buffet with us "commoners" you are welcome to choose a la carte from their lunch menu. I suspect this menu differs from their dinner menu, but should offer enough variety in any case.In my honest opinion I do not think their salad bar is half bad. As compared to Gold by Harlan, or Bloom, the salad bar Lupa offers a more fullsome variety including seared tuna, some decent parma ham among other cold cuts, salmon, seasoned aubergines, pesto pasta salad, cubes of cold quiche, olives etc. (8/10 - the way salad bar goes)Our meal was going fine until this penne. Quite disappointed to find it lacking heat, which is quite a no no for seafood (frozen) obviously. The pasta was probably homemade, which is encouraging but also gives for less quality control I believe. The texture is unlike any other penne I've had, it's almost crispy, crunchy. Which is so unconventional for pasta and penne....Not sure what to make of this. It's not your usual al dente, nor was it uncooked. (6.5/10)I really like this dish and so would you if you, like me, love pasta sauce more than pasta, as well as comfort food like mac n cheese. A critic would probably say the proportion of oxtail ragout vs gnocchi is a bit too much, indeed there is as much oxtail meat/sauce as there are gnocchi. But that's fine with me I like wet and soft foods. The softness is another thing that strikes me. The gnocchi probably shouldn't have been so soft as baby mush...but I liked it for what it was. At least it's got individuality lol. (8/10)DessertNeglected to take pictures of the bit size cakes and desserts from the buffet table. Nothing worth noting anyway. But I do appreciate the cheeses they had. (7/10)ServiceTheir service was quite good and professional. Exceeds the quality of the food in fact. Keep it up!…

NOT OK in itself, but fine for no/low expectations
Espuma (H8)
2014-10-08
Without a prior booking, you'd have to queue up for walk in for at least 20 mins I think. Caveat - if you went at 12:00-12:45 I would think your chances of going straight in is pretty high. As we did...LUCKILY. If I had to wait and queue up for this rubbish I would suffer from my own conscience.Decor and AmbienceI have no complaints on this count. Nice stained glass centrepiece, and generally a comfy vibe. But if they had to put an Iberico ham as decoration, they should probably use either a real one, or a fake one of the right size, and not a fake miniature...FoodThis place has had mixed reviews, and I was right to expect the least from Espuma. There is just no justifiable reason for its high popularity on Openrice. This place is EXTREMELY MEDIOCRE. Do not waste your time and money here, I'd say. To be fair, I suppose their desserts aren't as awful, but still not worth any wait. 1. DrinksI didn't taste this, I think it should be ok? Looks decent at least. This was ok, milky rich and frothy. The chocolate syrup underneath was not too sweet either, altogether not bad. (7/10)2. Seafood paellaActually I hope they didn't call this seafood paella. It's more like seafood "arroz" - meaning seafood rice. Nothing remotely like the authentic paella, except for the al dente texture of the rice. Otherwise it's too wet, not flavoured right, not enough heat, not particularly fresh seafood. Just awful. (2/10)3. This is just so bland....even with the ketchup we requested it couldn't make for a passable dish. Please please do not order this. :( (3/10)4. DessertsThis is the only dish we were able to finish...well except for the cream and some brownie cubes. The waffles were normal, not great, but at least fresh and warm. Macadamia icecream always goes well with waffles and brownies ~ (7.3/10)I haven't had many mochi waffles before, but this certainly discourages me from trying others. So chewy and rather flavourless, even with the red bean paste and green tea ice cream. No no. (5.5/10)To be honest, you probably have to expect about this quality given the affordable pricing. None of the tapas exceed $80 if I recall correctly. The desserts though were just priced right, around $50 for a half-set (the portions as we had above). Not particularly cheap there.I would like to repeat my wonder at how this Espuma got such high standing on Openrice. This reminds me of the importance of being earnest, of having independent and critical thinking, and of having low expectations. Important pointers for my fellow foodies.…

Overhyped? But decent to say the least.
Bread Street Kitchen & Bar
2014-09-18
I was thrilled to come to Gordon Ramsay the Masterchef's newly opened restaurant in Hong Kong, particularly as they didn't even post their number on Openrice. Exclusive...Typhoon 8 left Hong Kong slightly reeling, no one expected to sleep in their Tuesday mornings. As luck would have it, we left for work feeling a bit more energized, but also pressed for time and rushing to beat everyone else in the traffic. Luckily our lunch date survived, and here I am writing a review for this new kid on the block of English celebrity chef-Hong Kong restaurants.Decor and ServiceIn my hurry I forgot to take a picture, let me attempt to describe it as vividly as possible. Imagine...a canteen, brightly and naturally lit but mysteriously shrouded in a golden hue. Modern and patterned floor boards, with simple, chic furniture. As you walk ahead into the restaurant past the bar tables on your left, a line of assistants and sous-chefs carry on about with their preparations in an open kitchen bar on your right. They look confident, clean and recently flown in from somewhere. "How was your morning?", your attendant flashes a customary smile and banters as she takes you to your table. Perhaps she could make a reference to the typhoon instead of such a meaningless line of lip service. That would incentivise tipping. Our table faces the windows, from which you can people-watch at your heart's content. People scuttling about in LKF whilst the residual typhoon litters umbrellas everywhere makes for a selfishly interesting sight. The attendants are keen to impress, I was almost tempted to spell my mind instead of the customary Q&As. But ah well, why bother? Not sure they do want to hear me out anyway, humble little ignorant me.FoodNext time I will order the full course, a starter, a mains and a dessert. Today the typhoon scrambled up my schedule so we'll have to make do with just the mains. For your reference they do not offer a typical lunch set. Everything is ordered separately, a la carte.Steamed snapper with shellfish dressing ($208)The presentation of the dish - thumbs up !! I'm thrilled, not every lunch is garnished and flattered with such attention. The fish was nicely done, tender and fresh. Don't recall much about the sauce, but I do remember the clams tasting of their natural seawater saltiness and texture. Not certain about what "sea vegetables" actually consist of, it was a nice side to the fish anyway. Rated 8.3/10.Slow roasted pork belly ($198)Hmmm...my first instinct is to compare it with our Cantonese Chinese "delicacy" 燒腩仔. This is after all, our turf and Mr Ramsay had better be fully confident with this dish before introducing it to his menu. In my humble opinion, the meat could perhaps be more juicy and succulent, let the fat homogenise with the meat and together melt on the palette...Further if only the crust were crispier, and more resistant to oxidation even after ten minutes...That being said, the sauce and apple puree went well with the richness of the meat, there's your balance. But this dish for me, just lacks a wow factor. Rated 8.1/10.Finding the dessert menu lackluster, we just ordered a macchiato and a cappucino, respectively. Nothing worth mentioning on that either. To be fair I haven't been for dinner, but Bread Street Kitchen & Bar does make for a good joint for lunch. I wish Mr Ramsay could have come asked us for his opinion though …

Good! Keeps your lunch sweet, short and satisfied
Sagrantino
2014-09-17
Didn't book in advance, as some people evidently did. Nevertheless they were able to serve us at approximately 1 pm, and I am thankful for that. Come for a simple lunch, or when you itch for pasta - the staple comfort food that cheers up the soul.DecorIf you've been to any of the many restaurants in The Loop you would have a sense of what Sagrantino looks like. A long corridor with tables on either side, and then a slightly bigger area at the back. Sagrantino emulates a casual Italian-Asian vibe, nothing that gets you worked up or anxious about protocol.FoodI have not had the chance to sample their a la carte menu items yet, but having had a brief look at their menu I would want to try for example the Avocadonara pasta, or the squid ink risotto. (On that note please do correct the spelling mistake of "rissoto" at the entrance). We tried their lunch menus, and contrary to what my fellow reviewers said the portions are certainly sufficient. It may be that if you ordered the "grill" items you would leave half-full, but with pasta, good old dependable pasta, they serve you just the right amount. The soup we had, potato soup, was just alright. Not an expert on this so am just mentioning it in passing. Pollo (chicken heart, and kidney)I'm not a squeamish person for organs, if you are, don't read this paragraph. Organs have been used in European cuisines for a variety of dishes, yes, the "civilized cultures" eat them too. I've had calf liver, whole, grilled or seasoned somehow in Edinburgh (though even I can't finish it, just too much!). Chinese of course, love organs. I've never had pasta with the organs in such wholesome pieces though. In my opinion, the penne with creamy, cheesy sauce is just nicely complemented by chewy and flavourful organ morsels. Rated 7.6/10.Salsiccia (Italian sausage and red wine sauce)What's striking about this pasta sauce is that it does taste strongly of red wine minus the alcohol. Interesting take on a red, tomato base sauce. Didn't sample the sausage can't comment on that. Rated 7.5/10.Generally, their pasta needs an additional dash of cheese, and only if they automatically served the grated Parmesan along with the pasta. The drinks that come along with the lunch set are BLEH.ConclusionAs titled, this is a good place to come for comfort food, and where you have a limited lunch hour. Not bad for its value too, a pasta lunch set costs $118 with 10%.…

Did we happen to pick the wrong dishes?
Boqueria
2014-09-17
Having recently sampled some of the best dishes in different provinces of Spain, I really can't expect a lot from Hong Kong restauranteurs. But a girl has to satisfy her cravings and so after some preliminary research we visited Boqueria for dinner. Boqueria didn't even meet my not-so-high standards I previously set.DecorUpon entry I thought we got the wrong location. The place seemed absolutely packed, it was only after some navigation through the crowd that we were led to a quieter area at the back where people do sit down for food (still using bar tables and high rise seats though). I had a sinking premonition that told me this place is not designed for diners, rather as a chillax joint that serves casual tapas and drinks. Our first instincts are always accurate...FoodBikini toast with ham, cheese and truffle. To be honest, this cannot compare with the real deal you get in Barcelona, or even that in the Hong Kong restaurant Catalunya. The toast is way too thick to be considered "bikini"; unless this is a particularly well-built and voluptuous lady in a bikini...There is also too much inside this bikini, the ham slices are substantive and requires chewing, the texture of the cheese is too "coarse" and the truffle flavour is lost. None of the exquisite, delicate yet balanced combination you get in THE REAL DEAL. This is a cousin of the panini and the bikini...why not call it the pikini or banini instead. Rated 5.8/10.Slow-cooked 48 hour beef cheekOK, so I'm impressed by the choice of crockery. They serve you in Le Creuset, which did serve to score points. Likely the ONLY points worthy of this dish. Do not be tempted by the name, and one will be easily misled to be anticipating tender succulent beef cheeks. NO - you get the main course of beef broth, the beef cheeks are the 湯渣, only accessory to the main character of the broth. What this means is that the beef cheeks are tasteless AND chewy! Is that 48 hours of goodness seeped into the broth and nothing left in the beef cheeks? In that case I think I can serve the same in my own humble kitchen. Further, it's not even fulfilling, with 2 meagre pieces of beef charged at around $200. Rated 2/10.Chicken paellaAnyone who's been to Valencia will have tasted the authentic paella. Yes, it does and should come in a huge, flat wok. So there they've got at least something right. Now to the rice - wrong type of rice, wrong consistency, wrong temperature, wrong flavour. What more can I say? Mediocrity...Rated 3/10.Spanish toast with yoghurt icecream (don't remember its exact name)Not bad, perhaps because I haven't had the benefit of tasting a better rendition. (Honestly I have such low expectations for this restaurant already). It's special, because of the grainy sauce and slightly cinnamon-y taste of the filling. The yoghurt icecream does not have the full and tangy flavour of yoghurt, I've tasted much better versions of that at least. For encouragement I'd rate this 6/10. ConclusionCome for drinks perhaps, but not even their sangria is worth mentioning....…

Nice treat for a Friday lunch!
Fish & Meat
2014-09-12
Fish and Meat has been on my to-try list once, failing to get through that time I just archived the restaurant at the back of my head together with all the junk. This time though my sweet sister did get us through and so I braved through the hellish downpour of a shower and hiked up to Fish and Meat on Wyndham Street. That's the useless softener introduction done, moving on to the FOOD. But first, the ambience and decor:A bit of chic grunginess crossover modern easy comfort, I think that's the gist. The photo is probably more effective in giving you the idea. I'd give decor and ambience a 7.5/10.Onto the fooooood - for what does one live for, if not for the climax brought about by the explosion of flavours, texture and visual satiation? (Forgive me it's Friday) Smallevon crab salad/frisee/celery puree/japapenoI was told by someone who was told (soo much double hearsay), this is their signature dish. Hmm...I would not say this is amazing, but it's pretty good honestly. Bluntly put the dish comprises of three lumps of crab mixture with some avocado, celery and salad around it. Let's try a more romantic take - Fresh crab meat batter, a polygamous marriage of sweet and juicy celery goodness, subtly crunchy elements (apple??) and Devon crab, decorated and complemented by fresh salad, buttery but not over-ripe avocado slices and caramelized biscuits. My one comment is that the consistency of this dish is slightly too wet, even for a salad. Rated 7.8/10Large:Free range warm French chicken salad/pancetta/arugula/cherry tomato/basilFirst, this is bang for the buck. Generous portions and good proportion of all salad materials. Honestly I don't know how French chicken is different from any other chicken, do they eat buttered cornmeal or baguettes for breakfast? What is wonderfully executed in this salad dish is the preparation of the chicken (fillets I think), the marination and cooking of the chicken is just sublime. Croutons must have been fried in butter, methinks. Don't have much to add here except they didn't serve cherry tomatoes as advertised. YUM ANYWAY. Rated 8.5/10.Large’Connor Farm grass-fed beef tartare / pickled jalapeño / duck yolk / parmesan / friesI'm not a fries person, and the fact that fries took up half the dish makes me feel violated *sniffs*. That being said, hats off to the chef for turning this anti-fries person! Long and thin, these fries are perfectly executed and has none of the unpleasant greasy, starchy and bland qualities of your usual fries. I was told again they might have used chicken salt (wait is that 雞粉??), and on taste, no ketchup is needed. Enough on the fries. The beef tartare was ok, good but not otherworldly good. I have a vague memory of chewing on some cartilage ...overall rated 7.8/10.Whipped mascarpone “cheesecake” / raspberry / shortbread crumbleOf all the things I was told, I was NOT told this is deconstructed cheesecake! Hence it came as a surprise that it did not come in the moulded form of a flat triangular prism. It came as a BLOB of CREAM with crumble on top and sorbet at the side. (I have such a gift of being blunt don't I?) So when it came to tasting this overly-rustic looking dessert, I was blown away by the lightness and exquisite balance of each mouthful. I just had to ignore that voice inside my head screaming how much fat and calories I am feeding myself...Could perhaps consider adding some fresh berries on the side though. Brilliant comfort food on a Friday. Rated 8.2/10.MacchiatoGood coffee to end the experience! Aromatic and well-balanced coffee, fruity and not too sour. That's it! Would love to come back to try their steak, I'd imagine it'd be slowcooked and tender...will have to supplement this review later :)…

Restaurants located in IFC generally are a bit overpriced, but delivers decent food and service. This new-ish Japanese ramen shop exceeded my expectations, for several reasons:Quality of FoodFirst off I must admit my expectations were somewhat shaped by Gogyo's predecessor, another Japanese restaurant at the very same location. The quality there could fluctuate so much that you can walk out absolutely disgruntled one time but delightfully contented the next. Anyhow, Gogyo makes good, original ramen, as well as decent skewers with a twist.Ramen - 五行焦香味噌拉麵ark, rich broth with indeed some hint of smokiness. Ramen noodles were moderately thick, chasiu tender, all in all quite a wholesome main course. I'd rate this 8.5/10.黑拉麵: again a darkish broth, but with a bit of spice which does elevate the tastes and texture. Ramen noodles thick and chewy, chasiu an interesting adaptation - you'll see what I mean. Egg well executed. I'd rate this 8/10.Others - 和風串燒盛 (5 pieces): this consists of wagyu, smoked egg, cherry tomatoes wrapped in bacon (those are the best ones), and then also a disappointing salmon piece and scallop cubes. The latter ones were cold and didn't retain the fresh and melt-in-your-mouth experience seafood ought to have. On average I'd give this 7/10.Tofu panna cotta with chocolate crispy bits and sorbet : I guess they were inspired by all the "deconstruction" trend going on with French desserts or something, but anyhow this is an interesting rendition of panna cotta, no cream but tofu as the base. Nice surprise, and fresh berries. 7.5/10.DecorNice high ceiling, not a lot of seating. The bar table in the centre gives you both the ramen experience as well as a good place for drinks I suppose.ServiceThis I have to give mixed reviews because while one of the ladies who served us was all smiles and helpfulness, and who also asked for feedback on the food etc, one of the bartender/waitresses looked like she was yanked out of bed for work that is obviously below her...=~=That's it! Sorry about not bothering with pictures...but all the other reviewers post good pictures anyway, nothing much to add on that aspect. Oh and I forgot to mention Gogyo is more than ramen and skewers, it offers sashimi, sushi, other hot food, as well as lots of interesting good beer (which they also offer pairing with ramen and other courses, making a 7-course menu in total - try that if you have the time and luxury I suppose). Not very expensive either, for the qualit. Thus all in all, worth trying!…

Hygiene problems

At 7, we were seated at a nice sofa seat with the harbour view - don't get your hopes up this restaurant might have some nasty surprises in store for you, as it did for us.Food was ok, but the focus of this review is on its hygiene. Not trying to allege ANYTHING, and JUST STATING THE FACTS OF WHAT WE SAW, we would highly recommend the restaurant employ some pest control service. More frequently than normal. In short we had the company of not one - which would have been still tolerable - but TWO non human living beings, on the table AND on the sofa right next to us. Understandably our impression of this restaurant, with its eager waiters and more-than-moderately priced menu, immediately took a double turn. We have two waiters as witness, if anyone wonders about the truth of this review. For the bravehearted, this is a can-try. Though we won't be going again anytime soon....they didn't even give us a discount :(By the way, this wouldn't exactly fit in the fine-dining category, but the view was indeed great (though there are many other restaurants in this building with the same view really).Oh and don't expect big portions.…

Generally a pleasant experience

Amongst the many hidden gems of restaurants in Central, this one would ...just make the mark. :)Overall it was a pleasant experience, the first reason being its good value. Don't expect very wholesome portions, but for lunch, spending ~HK$100 for all courses of soup/spring roll, 1 dish 1 bowl of rice and dessert/fruit certainly qualifies. Plus the fact that the food, particularly the main course dish, tastes quite good, above average for sure. And don't forget its little gimmick of "Hakka" cuisine, which isn't very commonly found around HK I'd say? Ambience ok, it's cute. Service ... ok I suppose. Took their time in giving us our bill, but there was a genteel-looking waiter who really fits what I would imagine as a "Hakka yeye", and was courteous and all.We had the 鹽焗雞,百合蝦球, and separately ordered a dish of 雞翼(i don't seem to hv enough of chicken as of late), plus veggies. Erm, for two ppl haha. And we had our separate bowls of 三色飯, which I do appreciate for health reasons and not just your boring bowl of white rice. Anyway, I'd say the 鹽焗雞 and 百合蝦球 were certainly above average (4/5), but the chicken wings...can be given a miss. Portions, as I have alluded briefly above, are not huge. But enough, I guess.Dessert was a bowl - small bowl - of 紫米露. Mm...given my sweet tooth...I'd say it's only mediocre. Anyway, worth a shot! Or a backup plan to Friday lunch if you haven't made reservations in time...…
