I walked in here on a Thurs night with my clients as it was raining so hard we couldn't go anywhere following dinner in the same building. As we sat down, the wait staff said it was 250 minimum charge so I said no problem and we sat down.

The drinks were expensive (80-90 dollars and bottle of water was 60 dollars) but not unheard of in this area of Central. The rain was coming down really hard and the wait staff were distracted with fixing the overhead tarp roof was collapsing and was on the mend. They were too busy to pay attention to our table and we had to wave several times.

When we got up to leave, they said the minimum charge is actually 250 PER HEAD and demanded I pay an additional 1,100 dollars I supposedly owed them. I flat out refused as 7 different people at our table heard 250, not 250 per head. The wait staff and his "manager" came out and refused to yield. They said I can either buy a bottle and leave it there (I don't even drink but more importantly, why would I EVER want to come back?) or buy a bottle and take it away. When I said no, their next response was "If you don't pay up the 1,100 HKD, we call the cops." WHAT?! How is that in any way shape or form decent customer service?? If you don't agree on a point with a customer - a simple he said she said scenario - then you call the cops? How rude and obnoxious!

I negotiated with them with my clients in tow for about 70 minutes. Their idea of a negotiation tactic was "NO, we call the cops," and stonewalling me every step of the way even though I tried my best in a calm, logical way to suggest alternative solutions and compromises such as taking the head count down (Them: "No, the CCTV shows 7 people." Me: "So I can contact the owner and explain the situation so you don't get in trouble." Them: "No, he's away. You can't reach him." Me: "Can I e-mail him?" Them: "No, the e-mail comes to us.") Useless.

Eventually they decided to do me a "favor" and take the service charge away. I countered that there was no way I would be paying a service charge in these circumstances anyway so it wasn't a favor at all. Then they eventually yielded to graciously allow me buy a 890 dollar bottle of Chivas instead of paying up the 1,100 "missing" charge. But still, I now have a 890 dolloar bottle of Chivas I won't even drink and an incredibly bad taste left in my mouth.

My out of town clients were shocked and horrified (and two staff accused my clients "filming and recording the argument" and even demanded to see their phones to make sure they weren't recording) by this awful treatment. Unsurprisingly, I see that on this forum, there are many similar complaints. If they continue to treat customers in this way, I do not see this bar surviving in the long-term. Their idea of threatening to call the police and stonewalling customers is an incredibly short-term money extortion method.

I've since e-mailed their customer service to complain directly but have not received any reply back. Though I cannot comment on the quality of their drinks as I only had bottled water, my clients were generally satisfied with the drinks so my complaints in this establishment lies with the customer service only.

But if you wanted to be treated decently by well-trained staff, this is not the place. I do hope they can learn from this or at least learn to be more clear about the minimum charge being per head and in the case of a genuine misunderstanding like this one, be willing to be flexible and accept at least some of the responsibility. Needless to say, I will not be returning ever.
