First time I tried this restaurant, and definitely the last. Didn't have much expectation of the food. Afterall, what I look for in a dinner for 4 at $750 is not Michelin-starred dishes but just a reasonably comfortable environment where I can relax and pick the food I like, get the amount I want, eat at my own pace and enjoy some BASIC friendly service. Well, it turned out that Roda met NONE of the above requirements last evening.1. Environment: very narrow aisle seats. Four of us had to
1. Environment: very narrow aisle seats. Four of us had to squeeze into the tiny space between the table and the benches. Couldn't even cross our legs.
2. Service: We were seated at 6:30 pm and were told to give our last order by 8pm and to leave by 8:30. I wasn't informed that while booking on the phone. But that's ok. almost 2 hours, should be enough for a hearty meal. What drove me crazy, though, was that our orders were always missed. The food was very late -- 10-20 mins every time. We are not the greedy type who would order a 2nd round before they finish the 1st round. Waiters were mostly too "busy" to really follow our missed orders. So we just kept waiting, and waiting, and waiting till 7:30 when all we'd had was 4 bowls of congee and 4 meagre sushis. I asked a waiter, in a firm tone, to check our order.
"The kitchen might have missed your order. Fill in another form la," he said, without checking whether it really had.
"Again? That's already happened once tonight! And I don't want to wait another 30 min for a new order, and you didn't even say sorry," I contended.
"I've said 'ng ho yee see' lor wor. Fill in a new form la. How do I know what you wanna eat if you don't fill in a form again?
No matter how cross I was, I had to stay to finish the dinner, which was BOUND to cost $750. And I didn't wanna spoil the mood with my good friends by demanding the manager. Besides, (s)he might not care to appear at all.
Suddenly, at around 8:10, one dish after another came round, including some we hadn't ordered (that much). What does all that mean? It's almost time to rush us out, so came the food, huh? Or should we thank the restaurant for surprising and stuffing us with food we didn't expect in the last 15 mins? Bill came precisely at 8:15. With bills, they couldn't be more punctual.
Despite the good quality food, I'd rather go somewhere, anywhere but Roda, for a happier meal.
