Gyudon ... braised strips of beef with onion in a sweet savory sauce over rice. What's not to love? Apparenty enough for Japan to have three gyudon fast food chains: Yoshinoya, Sukiya and Matsuya. Hong Kong already has Yoshinoya but now Sukiya has arrived. With three branches! Perhaps with new branches, the original one that opened in Hong Kong didn't have much of a line. Menu is in English and Chinese. There is no 10% service charge and you pay on your way out. They offer a variety of gyudon as well as hotpot. You can add a little bit of money and change it into a set.
When I was browsing the menu, I saw strawberry milk with pudding ($29). This wasgreat. The perfect sweet milky strawberry that I often get from a Japanese convenience store. And lots of pudding to drink up.
Boyfriend had the new item: Mushroom Gravy Gyudon with Half Boiled Egg ($43 for medium size). This was ok with a lot of mushroom in it and heavy black pepper presence.
I had the Half Boiled Egg Yakiniku Bowl ($44 for medium size). The beef was soft and not chewy. But the sauce, compared to Yoshinoya, wasn't as good. Portion was big and I gave half of it to boyfriend. The egg had a wonderful runny yolk.
One of us added $20 for a karaage and drink set upgrade so we could share the karaage. The drink you can choose tea or soft drink or even miso soup. Boyfriend had the tea as I already had my drink. It was really REALLY sweet. Boyfriend felt it was perfect. The karaage on the other hand was terrible. Cold and soggy. Not even nicely seasoned. Definitely don't waste money on this.
The food as ok and closely resembled what we had in Japan. Worth it only if no line. If there is a line? Not worth your time.
