It seems Asia has a dizzy array of shaved ice desserts. From Japan to Taiwan to Korea, shaved ice is refreshing on the hot day. Thailand has their own version of shaved ice. Called nam kang sai, it's served on the streets of Thailand where it's just heaps of ice is served on top of various toppings like coconut jelly, jackfruit and candied taro. All of this is drizzled with a coconut milk or condensed milk.Chatuchak is a place that serves Thai shaved ice. Or at least their version of it. Locate
Chatuchak is a place that serves Thai shaved ice. Or at least their version of it. Located in Argyle Center, a place with a lot of other take away only food stations, is this place. Boyfriend was keen to try it out and it did take us a while to find it as it was hidden away among all the small clothing shops. It's take away only.
Menu is in English and Chinese. They serve not only shaved ice but drinks. They also sell packaged Thai desserts like pandan cakes,
Mango Sticky Rice Shaved Ice ($48). Originally, we wanted Thai Tea but they ran out. So, we shared the mango flavor. The shaved ice is made to order, so there is a wait time. But wow ... was it pretty to look at! The shaved ice was flavored with mango so it appeared yellow. It was topped with a sweet and rich coconut cream.
Digging into the ice, I found chunks of fresh mango and lots of sweet sticky rice. The mango was super sweet. The rice was soft and gooey. After a lot more digging, we found broken bits of ice cream cone on the very bottom. This was a surprise but it gave it the crunch factor. Though it may not be the traditional Thai shaved ice, this was not a bad fusion version of it. Portion size was definitely enough to share between two people.
Thai Milk Tea ($18). I grabbed a Thai milk tea as originally I did want something to drink. The tea was very strong with a good balance of condensed milk to sweeten it. The various spices were there though not as strong.
Definitely something different in Mong Kok than the usual snacks. It'd be even better if it's really hot outside so I'd highly suggest ordering the shaved ice.
