Selfie Cafe? Like in the word "selfie"?

I decided to check it out.

The cafe has an open setting. Much like the other cafes in Times Square as that is how the mall  has set them up.

Selife Cafe is not really new. There is one found in Singapore and Malaysia. I'm unsure if this one originates from there as I couldn't find this information anywhere. But what they do is, you take a photo and upload it to them. They will then use a printer that uses a food color cassette to print out a photo on your coffee.

The menu is in English and Chinese. It's split between selfie drinks and nonselfie drinks. Obviously, I was here for a selfie drink! There is no 10% service charge but there is a minimum one drink per person.

Instructions are given in English and Chinese. What you basically do is order a drink. You download the app to take a selfie, fill in your order with the receipt number. Then you wait for your drink to be made.

I ordered an ice minty mocha ($62) and downloaded the app. Once downloaded, I realized there was no English available. Only Chinese. So, I'm going to translate what to do step by step for my English readers so we can all get in on the fun.

When you open the app, you come to this screen. From top left to right: Upload photos. Product list. From bottom left to right: Contact. Latest news. Basically, just click the top left button to upload photos. When I used this app, the other three took you to a 403 page not found.

You get four selections (from top to bottom): Coffee, macaron, chocolate, marshmallow.

After choosing what you ordered, you come to this screen on what method to upload the photo. From top to bottom: Camera, Gallery. When I used to app, the function to use camera caused a force close. I tried it several times and finally resorted to using choosing a photo from my gallery.

Since I had to use my gallery photo, I just used my general online icon. The next screen is where you can move it about to see where you want it centered. That will be what your drink will look like and I did like that it was a circle for coffee and macarons and a square for chocolate and marshmallow.

When your drink is ready, your pager will ring to pick up your drink. Pretty cool, huh? I usually have low expectations on food focused on gimmicks as they are usually pretty bad but I was surprised when I took a sip. It was really good. It was chocolatey with a strong taste of mint. It was super cold! Surprise surprise! Gimmick food that tastes good!

I noticed they also had chocolate, marshmallows and macarons for sale where you can also create a selfie with. As I was meeting boyfriend I ordered two macarons ($98).

It was placed in a nice box with a transparent top.

The macaron was ... well, not that great. The vanilla ganache was fine but the macaron, itself, lacked that signature almond taste that makes for a good macaron. It was also hollow and it lacked the signature feet.  I guess acceptable if you are giving away at a wedding or something where people do not care anyways. But as a macaron lover, this was clearly disappointing.

Fun cafe and I would return again the drinks. I would even recommend it to friends who want to do something creative for their wedding. Though they should fix their app.
