Ok, so I need to clarify an important point before we continue - this is a meal review rather than a restaurant review. I’ve eaten at the Main Street Deli a handful of times before and have pretty much had a decent feed each time. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel - a burger and chips is hardly nouvelle cuisine. Nevertheless, a good burger and chips can be a magnificent thing. I’m sad to report though that my last meal at MSD was disappointing. My downfall, on this occasion, was to go ‘off piste’ and
My downfall, on this occasion, was to go ‘off piste’ and try something different. Namely, one of the dishes from the specials menu – a lamb kebab. The kebab meat was bright red (presumably heavily dyed) and a bit bland. Also, it was blazing hot but had no grill marks, which makes me think it had just been blasted in a microwave. There was no salad to speak of, just a couple of limp lettuce leaves, and the goats cheese that was advertised was either so minuscule that I missed it or absent altogether. The French fries were satisfactory.
Having said all that, my co-eaters all went for burgers and had no complaints. In fact my wife just reiterated to me, and I quote, “I love their burgers, I think they’re the best in Hong Kong”. I’m not sure that I entirely agree but the burgers are good.
At $570 per couple, including a couple of drinks and a shared dessert (banoffee pie – lovely), the Main Street Deli aint cheap. But the wife loves it so no doubt I’ll go back and give it another chance.
Oh, I must mention the cheesecake. We didn’t have it this time but I’ve had it in the past. So rich, so good, and one slice is enough to feed four!
