It's been way too hot lately. So, the best thing to do is to hang around where there is air conditioning. And that is a mall. As we were in Shatin, we stopped here for lunch as it seemed to be new.小南洋 (English name: Little NanYang) serves Singaporean food much like Toast Box.A la carte menu is in English and Chinese. You can order by scanning a QR code with your mobile phone. It's pretty handy but again only the a la carte was in English. You click to tea set menu and get all Chinese.
They also have a menu with a varying number of toast sets. This is also in Chinese only. These items are not available in the a la carte bilingual menu.
Boyfriend ordered a beef laksa ($42) off the tea set. This was pretty spicy but rich in coconut flavor. The beef was tender. Boyfriend was also happy has they gave him lots of potatoes.
I had the Hainan chicken rice bowl ($42). This gave me mixed feelings. The rice was pretty good. A strong fragrant taste of chicken oil without feeling oily. The dipping sauces were good and the cucumber was fresh. But the chicken was bland. The star was just unseasoned. Moist yes. Bland yes as well.
Boyfriend was still hungry and a few people ordered toasts sets so we shared a toast set with noodles ($36). This came with two slices of toast and macaroni in tomato soup. This macaroni was ok. Boyfriend hated it was so soft but honestly, I never expect al dente at places like this, so I was ok with it. The tomato soup was very rich so I liked it.
The toast was French toast and not that good. Soggy and it seemed the egg wasn't all soaked through so there was some strange doughy texture to it. We should have went with just the toast sets as we saw one that looked like a cheese pizza. That looked better. May come back again to give the toast another chance.
Would probably be back as the food was mostly good. It's a lot better than the other options on this floor.
