Recently there have been a lot of places that made Shanghai cuisine fancy or cute. Modernized for the social media craved public. But not 上海榮華川菜館 (English name: Shanghai Wing Wah (Sze Chung) Restaurant).  Located in Kwun Tong, is a small restaurant that has been run by the same family for 40 years. It caught the attention of Michelin in 2012 and 2013 as a recommended restaurant. Boyfriend and I visited it in 2013 and there was always a huge crowd outside. But when we walked it that evening, it was quiet except for a few residents who went in to eat.

The place is definitely not fancy. It's rather old in design.

On the walls are gifts from past customers who dined here.  Drawings gifted to the owner.

In one corner, one person is wrapping wontons by hand. It was at that point I wanted wontons.

The menu is in Chinese only. There is an English menu upon request. But they offer a two people set that is in Chinese only.  This includes two cups of Tao Bao Tea, two bowls of rice, two bowls of sour and spicy soup and two mains chosen from the set menu.  All for only $206. There is no 10% service charge and you pay on your way out. There is a soup upgrade of $15 if you want the Shanghai wontons in chicken soup and a rie upgrade of $15 if you would rather have dandan noodles.

The tao bao tea is basically  chrysanthemum tea with red dates, golgi berries, a dried mandarin peel and some sort of herbal jelly. With all this, it was definitely healthy. Sweetened and fragrant, it was also pretty to look at, too.

Boyfriend added $15 for the dandan noodles upgrade. It was fairly spicy and the noodles were very chewy.

As I saw the woman making the wontons at the table next to me, I wanted to upgrade the soup. So, for a mere $15, this is the BEST deal in town. It is a bit more oilier than other places that serve this but this is because the chicken is placed in afterwards. Here they use the same chicken to make the soup and serve it back to you. Though it was cooked away, the meat was still fairly moist and full of flavor. The soup was strong and rice. The wontons were the best of all. The filling was packed and wonderful combination of pork and spring onion. The skin was not too thick and very smooth in texture. This is an upgrade worth getting.

The twice cooked pork belly with cabbage was one of the mains we chose. It was slightly spicy. The pork was tender. The cabbage soaked up the sauce very well.

The other main we chose was lion head meatballs. It was served on a bed of sue choy that soaked up this wonderful sauce. The sauce was savory but not overly salty. Rich in flavor. The meatballs were wonderfully fluffy. So fluffy, they were like clouds.

Food that was well created at a very reasonable price. It may not be fancy, but it's definitely honest and down to earth. Worth a visit.
