The much hyped opening: Eggslut. At least for me. Originally from LA, this place I've had on my radar for a long time and I had planned to have one if I ever came across it in my travels. Well, now they have a place in Hong Kong! And I waited until the queues died down and gave it a try.Located in Fashion Walk, the entrance is on the ground floor but the actual restaurant is up a flight of stairs on the first floor. Located in Fashion Walk, the entrance is on the ground floor but the actual restaurant is up a flight of stairs on the first floor. It's not very big. Seating is on the left and right (though I suggest dining on the left side, facing the street as the other side doesn't have enough air conditioning.
Menu is in English and Chinese. There is no 10% service charge and staff mainly speak English. They have six different burgers along with a few snacks and drinks. They do not offer combos. All the burgers have an egg, hence the name. A pager will be given to you after ordering.
I got the Fairfax ($69). A scrambled egg and chive sandwich with caramelized onion, melty cheddar cheese, siracha mayo and a softly toased brioche bun. My favorite burger bun of choice. A fork is provided for you because the filling will fall out so you can use that to scoop it up later. It was pretty good. A good combination of flavours and the egg was cooked perfectly. Yes, there is no meat so ... for $69 it is a bit pricey.
I ordered a Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice ($37). First of all, I'm glad they offer other choices other than soft drinks. I dislike soft drinks so having these other options is really good for me. The price of the juice was really expensive. For this price I could buy a 1L carton of imported American orange juice at the grocery store. Was it freshly squeezed? I have no idea as it came from a machine. It did taste good but they also added ice. Perhaps next time I will request no ice or less ice.
The food was good though a bit expensive. But then it's not a cheap fast food place in the US as well. Service does need a bit of work. When I went to order, I was ignored for a good 5 minutes before someone actually asked me if I was using cash or not. And this was the manager who was standing next to the cash register, busily doing the daily biling updates. He is busy which is fine that he can't serve me. But what about the regular cashier person? Off chatting? He finally helped me out and then told someone to man the cash register. When my food was ready, they forgot the orange juice. But this was promptly provided for me when I informed them. Then as an after thought, one staff asked if needed a tray to carry my food. Yes, it would help. There was an apology but it seemed people were still working things out and it wasn't too smooth. I'd be back and hopefully service improves. Though should commend one staff who helped me find a seat. He was amazing to see if he air conditioning wasn't too strong.
