After reading about this place in a magazine, I thought refurbishing a historical TCM shop to a cafe while still paying homage to its history by keeping its most distinctive features is a novel concept that deserves a visit. A visit that turned out to be a slight disappointment. The honey americano is average. The food is also mediocre. The eggs benedict meets Hong Kong standards, but there's nothing special about it. In fact, the hollandaise sauce has a tad too much lemon juice in it and rendered the dish more sour than it needs to be. The 大和堂菠蘿油 (pineapple bun) is a great concept but unfortunately the description (homemade pineapple bun, foie gras, rhubarb) is deceptive. They should change it to 'homemade bread, foie gras pate, rhubarb' instead, as the bread does not bear any resemblance to a pineapple bun apart from its looks (the bread overly sweet and soft) and the foie gras is a pate (not the actual solid liver as the description implies).
Other than the food quality, 大和堂 is a rather peaceful and quiet environment to sit and relax in. The high ceiling creates an airy and open space that I really love in cafes.
I wouldn't say that the food is overpriced, but more that the quality you get is not worth what you pay, and is certainly not worth the hype. Save yourself a trip and go somewhere else.
