I didn't want to walk too far this time after my trip to Mongkok under that blazing heat over the holiday so I just wandered around my hood until I passed by a cafe beside a hotel. I noticed a closed green gate with a sign showing the restaurants' relocation point. It wasn't that far so I followed its directions and saw that the restaurant has more space compared to their previous spot. It was a full house with many people choosing to take out than dine in. It wasn't that far so I followed its directions and saw that the restaurant has more space compared to their previous spot. It was a full house with many people choosing to take out than dine in. It didn't have a queue too so that was nice. When I saw this full house that looks like it has a homey-like environment, I just couldn't pass up on that opportunity and I quickly queued.
Their menu is offered in English and in Chinese. Considering that this was my first time here, I looked around the other tables and followed what the majority ordered. And most of them had a bowl with a fried egg on it with a side of kaya toast. I looked again at their limited but well-appreciated menu and decided on a Pork patty with fried egg on top of rice ($30) and fried rice rolls ($20).
Their menu board clearly showcase their top dishes and as I've said, their menu is limited but that's what's so good about it. I highly appreciate restaurants who take pride in what they do. The lesser the items, the better. Unlike most restaurants with a long list of bland and overly salty dishes, 兩草 focuses only on what they serve best and boy, do they make some mean comfort foods.
My receipt came out half a minute later and I noticed something odd on it. I mentally take note of my meal totals from time to time. So I asked the same man who took my orders and he kept asking me "You didn't order this?" and with my crappy and broken Cantonese, I replied with "No, just pork patty and fried rice rolls". He then changed my receipt with the correct items listed.
Despite being a full house, I think that the two staff members handled the restaurants' operations efficiently. Having six tables with seven seats each, the maximum dining occupancy is 42 people. The two staff members managed to handle the diners, the customers in-queue and also the take out ones quickly and accurately.
After a good wait, my pork patty with fried egg on top of rice came first. The bowl was piping hot and I could see the steam coming out of the fried egg. Garnished with chives and a bit of purple onions, the egg yolk looked runny. It wasn't the kind that I love but this was still good.

I took a bite of the egg and beneath it is the pork patty. It was neither too thin nor was it too thick. I noticed that the food tasted a little weird though. I can't tell if it was because of the chopsticks' wood finish or if it's because that's just how their food really tastes like. It was okay overall but I think I just need more time to get used to the strange flavor.

Next to arrive was the fried rice rolls. They look so pretty with that beautiful charred and glossy look. I believe it was fried with a bit of egg whites and then garnished with their usual chives and a few bits of purple onions. Those egg whites really add an extra flavor punch to the whole dish. It was so good, I felt like I flew to my happy place.

The bottom of this dish had leftover oil dripping from the rice rolls. I despise dishes filled with oil and MSG but oddly enough, I was okay with this. The reason why I hate MSG-filled and oily dishes is that the owner tries their hardest to fool their customers by hiding the real flavor of the dish with extra unwanted additives that are harmful for the body. And as for this dish, I didn't feel bad nor did I felt like my arteries were getting clogged up. Maybe they use good oil (?) If they do, then I commend the owner for having the right consciousness to their customers' well-being.
If you think you need even more extra flavors to your dish/es then they've already prepared condiments for your convenience. Though if you ask me, their dishes are already perfect the way they are.
Cash only. There is no 10% service fee. Lastly, I noticed that the customers who came later than me ordered BBQ pork so that's what I'm going to be trying next. Their fried fish cakes were also very popular. Even better, I'll try all of their dishes. I'm so glad this restaurant exists in my hood because I'll be visiting every chance I get.
