Sinmei Tea (named after the owner herself) is a well-know tea café in Sheung Wan. I’ve been there once but got scared off by the long line up. But one day my friend and I decided to have an early afternoon tea (at 12pm lol) so we went up to try our luck, and sure enough we got seats right away!The café is located inside a commercial building which didn’t seem too fitting, but as soon as I stepped out of the elevator on the 5th floor I felt like I got transported to another area in HK. The café is located inside a commercial building which didn’t seem too fitting, but as soon as I stepped out of the elevator on the 5th floor I felt like I got transported to another area in HK. The interior is very spacious and semi-outdoors since they made good use of the patio. While the seats weren’t exactly comfortable to sit in per se, the deco still does have a very inviting vibe to it and makes you want to sit down and laze around the entire afternoon.
They even have a cat stationed in the restaurant! Watching him makes me want to take an afternoon napWe weren’t that hungry so we just ordered a cake each. I got a Matcha Cheesecake
Before my visit I’ve always kind of expected this restaurant to be over-hyped, since HK seems to be inexplicably fond of matcha desserts. However this was definitely NOT the case. This cheesecake was SOOOOOO good! The cake was very smooth and creamy, yet not overly sweet .The cream cheese wasn’t overpowering as well so I felt like I was eating a very luscious matcha mousse. Delicious!My friend ordered a Banana Toffee Pudding
There aren’t any matcha present in this dessert (aside from the decorative powder) so I wasn’t sure if this would be a good choice. But again I was pleasantly surprised – it was creamy and the bananas were very noticeable. Best of all the dish was warmed up pre-serving so the pudding remained warm and gooey as we finished it.Very satisfied with my visit and I’d definitely love to be back. I need to try their matcha drinks and the famous sizzling matcha brownie!
