After passing by this cafe numerous times going up the midlevels escalator, I finally got a chance to bring my friends to this place for dinner. The first floor was not designed for decent dinner seating; 2nd and 3rd floors are much more spacious. We got a table on the 2nd floor; the ambience was quite nice, but it was too noisy for comfortable conversations at times. Great for couples not but for large parties.I did my research on OpenRice and so we ordered their signature Life Salad, the Afric
I did my research on OpenRice and so we ordered their signature Life Salad, the African Stew, Tofu Skewer, and the famous Carrot Cake for dessert.
The Life Salad had a mix of ingredients infusing with a tasty sauce. Overall it was quite good, although their raw veg was not the best that I've tasted from organic restaurants. I wonder are all of their ingredients 100% organic? It's always the case with vegs labelled "organic": There is no way to tell. We can only say whether the veg was not THE freshest.
The African Stew was only satisfactory. Nothing special about it. Presentation was nice but the taste didn't wow us.
The taste of the famous carrot cake was fun, but the texture was a bit dry (not freshly baked?). Organic (esp vegan) foods can easily have a cardboard texture, although it doesn't need to be. Clearly it needs improvement.
Just echoing what others have said below, customer service was very unprofessional, especially our waitress, who seems to only have her eyes on the big tables, umm let me guess, bigger tips? Right from the start she gave us rolled eyes because the three of us ordered one bottle of mineral water. Then during the course of the dinner, she gave priority to big tables and completely ignored us even when we motioned her to come numerous times. When she finally came, she kept insisting us to have dessert, then giving us rolled-eyes again after we said we would share one carrot cake together. What kind of service is this?! Apparently it is a crime to be a light eater in this restaurant!
Then the final climax ending this special meal was the 15-min-delayed arrival of that piece of cake, which all she had to do was to go downstairs and get it from the display fridge. What happened was our waitress completely forgot about us. I don't know why it would take so long to get a piece of prepared cake and put it on a plate. In the end we had to ask another waiter to get our cake.
This type of unprofessional customer service is so rare nowadays; it is a disgrace to have experienced this in the heart of SoHo.
Overall the atmosphere is very commercial and not down-to-earth like an organic place should be.
Unfortunately it is just another commercially run organic-labelled hype restaurant.
