I just went there for lunch with a colleague and the Phở was so bad, it compelled me to finally use this account I created 2 years ago to write a review. I did not take any picture of this meal but pictures from other lunch reviews are pretty accurate. I will only judge the lunch menu here as I have seen people reviewing the dinner seemed quite satisfied with it.The way you order the lunch is inspired by Ramen shops where you order the different ingredients of your soup, such as meat, noodles, h
The way you order the lunch is inspired by Ramen shops where you order the different ingredients of your soup, such as meat, noodles, herbs and sides.
The portion was ridiculously small even with the top up (+10HKD) that I ordered after seeing my neighbor's tiny bowl. I also paid 18HKD for the extra herbs; they were all fresh except for the mint which was already withering along with my patience. The few slices of thinly cut US Grade beef were raw, which is good, but a few more of them would have been welcome with an open mouth considering the price of this soup (68HKD).
The Phở soup was so bland that I could not tell if there was any beef, onion, ginger or star anis or any spice whatsoever used to cook the broth. It looked more like a watery ramen broth than an authentic Phở soup, whitish bland water.
Usually, Phở broth has a little bit of fat in it, coming from the beef bones or the beef brisket but here, the little fat that was in there was probably coming from the lip balm I put on my lips before lunch. Actually, not having brisket on offer should have been a warning already. I had to ask for some fish sauce (salty) to make it tastier since it seemed the chef had run out of salt, MSG (there's always a little bit of MSG in a good Phở broth, believe me or not) and spices or forgot his taste buds at home.
The Banh Mi snack was ok but anything would be after this disaster they call Phở soup. There was a good balance of garnish and bread, even though the bread was a bit soggy. The rice roll was ok except for the lack of shrimp in there, very pesky from them as it seems the ones you order à-la carte have some as I have seen from pictures.
We were the among last customers of the lunch service but we had to remind the staff to bring us the juice and the rice roll.
This place might be good for dinner, but as for their lunch set, it's the worst in the area, and the level of Wan Chai is pretty low Phở-wise. I still can't believe I paid 180HKD for this tiny bowl of tasteless noodles.
Save yourself some time and money during lunch, avoid at all cost, even for free.
