My double-whammy Japanese meal in one day, this was dinner at a place that I have been to several times for lunch. My double-whammy Japanese meal in one day, this was dinner at a place that I have been to several times for lunch. They had a big birthday party and the place was packed; I wanted to sit outside to stay away from the crowd, get a bit of fresh air and also one or two ciggie puffs, as my friend is a smoker.

I waited for my friend by the bar table, and was studying the menu for their detailed sake list. Suddenly a voice asked, "What wine would do you want to have tonight? Let me treat you to something." It was the owner (I recognised him as he knows a colleague of mine). I was a bit overwhelmed, maybe he was having fun with the party and felt very generous. I was seated there for another 5 minutes and he came up again to offer some plum wine for us. I accepted, it was a gracious gesture, and it's a pity you don't see that enough in Hong Kong.

Anyway, we were finally seated outside, they had big fans blowing so it was an de-hotted and pleasant atmosphere. Strangely enough I was not too hungry, and we decided to order some grilled things on sticks, as I wanted some post-training protein (well, it ended up more fatty in the final analysis lol) We had the following, in order of yummiliciousness (at this juncture, I must defer to the other numerous OR japanese food experts for correct japanese food names hehe):

(1) Ox tongue - thick slabs and a bit chewy, the gamey beef taste was abundant and I ordered 2 portions all for myself (my friend doesn't eat the stuff as she said she is not fond of french kissing a cow rofl). With a tongue so succulent, the experience gives kissing my honey a run for the money! ;) ROFL very cheesy but what the heck!!

(2) Chicken wings - the skin was just crisp enough and it was seasoned just right with "7-flavours powder". This was really pretty good.

(3) White eel - this was again succulent, and the skin was very crispy with no trace of oil on it.

(4) Chicken soft bone - this was crispy in the right places and well-seasoned, a good companion with a beer.

(5) Minced chicken with leek - nice, the leeks were fresh and done "soft inside, dry outside".

(6) Ginko nut - I had one of these from my friend, it was ok.

We also had a crab (and shrimps, compliments of the house again lol) salad and a cold white noodles. Both were quite decent.

The owner came out to check on us a few times, he was very friendly and made us feel very welcome. There were also some complimentary fresh fruits consisting of melon and grapes in the end.

So there you have it, two Japanese meals in a day, the first where "arms-length brisk business" was the order of the day, and the second where "making your customers feel welcome in the hope that they will spend more" is the philosophy. I must say they both work, depending on your temperament and varying needs. But no prizes for guessing which I prefer lol!
