During the Chinese New Year, I decided to return to Uji-En to purchase some candies to treat guests that would come over. As you see, Uji-En has a nicely sized shop that sells not only tea but their special candies and other sweets. But while I was there, I was intrigued in two items which I brought home with me.The first was this: a box of matcha cream rolls ($98). The first was this: a box of matcha cream rolls ($98). It was packaged in a slim transparent plastic box with a silver elastic around it.
The ingredients and nutritional content was labelled in English and Chinese.
Inside were eight pieces. A bit expensive for eight cookies but it seems a lot of things from Japan are pretty expensive in Hong Kong. The rolls were individually wrapped in a green wrapping that felt washi-like.
Opening it up, it was a thin light brown kawara senbei which is a hard Japanese biscuit made of flour, eggs and sugar and cooked on a hot flat iron. For those familiar with a fortune cookie, this is what it tastes like. A sweet but not too sweet cookie that was hard and crunchy.
The entire biscuit was filled with a soft creamy matcha cream. The matcha had a slight bitterness but it was balanced by the sweetness of the cookie. It was delicious.
I also bought a package of matcha tea powder ($58 for 70 grams) as I wanted to make matcha cookies during the new year. This was packaged in a plastic bag.
The nutritional content and ingredients were in English and Chinese. It's not pure matcha as they have added sugar to it. The bag also had instructions in Japanese. Basically, add 120 mL of hot water and 12 grams (or one tablespoon) of powder. Of you can also drink it cold by adding 100 mL of hot water and 2-3 ice cubes.
Opening it, I was surprised there was another bag! Apparently, they double sealed the tea.
Opening this, I finally got to the tea! Inside was a very fine bright green powder.
Following the instructions for hot tea, the color became a very dark green. The powder was very easy to dissolve. Taste? There was a slight bitterness from the tea but it was also sweet. I think it was more sweeter than I expected. At least it didn't taste like a mouthful of powder as sometimes I find in buying cheaper brands.
The cookies were a bit expensive but they were really good. But the tea was pretty easy to drink and reasonably priced. I'd probably purchase the tea again.
